The beginning of the end of socialist health care?

Canada's government-run national health system, often held before Americans as a model method of delivering medical care, has been gradually falling to pieces in recent years, and last week it received what many fear will prove the knock-out blow.

That blow came from Alberta where the provincial Conservative government of Premier Ralph Klein is defying federal laws intended to safeguard the system against private medical practice. Klein unveiled a plan to institute a controversial "two-tier system" in his province – meaning two levels of medical care, one run by the government and delivered without fee, the other delivered privately with a fee attached.

This would end in Alberta the utopian socialist vision that inspired the institution of state medicine in Canada four decades ago, wherein rich and poor alike were to get the same level of care. But it was a vision increasingly belied by reality, because the rich could acquire the best care simply by traveling to the United States.

This they have been doing in ever larger numbers because waiting times for surgical and other specialist services in Canada can run to as much as two years, and people sometimes die waiting for them. One of the central causes for this was the exodus of doctors to the U.S. where their income would wildly exceed what they could earn in Canada.

I have no doubt that in this, the Thirty-ninth Parliament of Canada, we are going to see a very bitter and violent climate in regards to the Canada Health Act and the publicly-funded healthcare system in this nation. I would certainly hope that the Government of Canada invokes, in the interest of the nation, its right to disallow provincial legislation, were this matter to be enacted by the Honourable Normal Kwong.

Socialized healthcare is by far the most bizarre term I've heard since coming to the US... People just don't get it. We have socialized healthcare here, in the US too. It's to a lesser extent than Canada, but it's never going to die out because people want treatment when they're sick regardless of whether they can afford the price tag. I've never once heard a parent volunteer to let their baby die because they couldn't pay for the treatment we provide.

It will be very sad to see Canada dismantle its health care system for a less efficient one (and that's what private health care is).

Some of the best health care systems in the world (including wait times, service, price) use a public and private delivery. Contrary to what Canadians think we do not have the best system by any measure, nor does the rest of the world operate a single public system (handful do). I can't understand how a modern society like Canada can be so brainwashed........again it must be the media....CBC particularly, but our make no sence politicians push this myth too.

Hank C, I would suggest that we need to have a "partnership" between the public and private systems (while I greatly value our public healthcare system, it no longer has the resources to provide "reliable" and "timely" service, in my opinion); I would suggest that where the public system cannot provide care within a certain period of time, then private caregivers would be required by law to provide any such services, to be paid for afterward by the Government; rather than persons being forced to pay for care out of their pocket, if the public system fails.

We have always had parts of our health care system that are private. The labs where your doctor sends you for blood tests, pee tests, etc. are private.

The thing that is the most frightening about the American system is that eventually, insurance companies start making medical decisions. Some bloody bean-counter will over rule your doctor as to what treatment you are entitled to. I know this happens in the U.S. from personal experience.

The biggest threat to our health care system is the moronic right wing and their bottom line-itis.

Harper has promised to defend the health care act. I guess we'll see if he does.

Canada needs to give the Health Care System back to the experts, Doctors and Nurses. Most hospitals spend huges sums of money for management that have no experience in the Health Care Industry. I have seen what the system is like these past six years, I have lost a Grand Mother, Father, Neighbour, dear friend all to Cancer. Once they were diagnosed the wait times were not exceptable and fightening and treatments for Cemo and Radiation took far to long receive. However; when they reached the Pallitive Care Stage the system worked wonderfully. The day before my father died they wanted to give him an MRI and when he asked me what I thought I said "Dad you are dying do you want to spend an hour in that machine" he replied "No someone who has been waiting four months to have an MRI should get this slot." They system is broken, it needs to be fixed.

You are entirely correct, #juan; the Right Honourable Stephen Harper promised to protect the Canada Health Act. With Ralph Klein confirming that his legislative measures to be brought in to impose two-tier health care in Alberta would violate the Canada Health Act, I would like to see the Prime Minister attempt to invoke the right of the Parliament of Canada to disallow provincial legislation.

All public institutions are on the block, they will be carved up and parceled out to the private sector, once Harper has a majority then were phucked.
