Damn!
The former Conservative government of Stephen Harper came up with a plan to phase out most coal-fired generation. The Trudeau government accelerated it. Ontario has closed its coal-fired plants and Alberta has promised to do the same.
But Canada is not phasing out coal.
First, the federal government plans to exempt coal-fired generating plants that are able to reduce their emissions significantly through new technologies, such as carbon capture and storage. This is perilously close to the notion of clean coal that Trump is mocked for discussing.
Second, Canada continues to mine and export coal for other countries to burn. In 2015, it exported more than 30 million tonnes, mainly to Asian steelmaking plants.
Canada's Valley Girl
While many politicians can easily be compared to a Barbie doll because of their eagerness to stage themed photo ops for self promotion, not many can be compared beyond their shameless self-promotion. Yet the honourable Catherine Mckenna manages to go beyond that.
We understand that you want to present yourself in hip and trendy way to millennials, but you are presenting yourself in a very juvenile and plebeian fashion.
More importantly, you’re a cabinet minister, a member of the Privy Council and a privileged citizen of Canada that has the honour of representing your fellow citizens in the House of Commons. Such an institution deserves much more respect than we are seeing from ‘Cathy from the Valley’. The only way speech should be articulated in Parliament should be in the Queen’s English or Québécois Français rather than crude vocal fry.
Sadly, Gerry Ritz has deleted the (Climate Barbie) Tweet and apologized since then. The only thing he is really guilty of is failing to stand his ground. The false charges of sexism only work because conservatives are too afraid to fight against the fake and discrediting label. Mckenna is clearly trying to brand her plebeian mannerisms into some sort of social cause by falsely branding Ritz a sexist for calling her out by mocking her. That’s just banter, a well-established House of Commons tradition that spans the Commonwealth. If you can’t handle that because you are hyper-sensitive, then you have no business having a seat there and conducting the affairs of the country.
