Re: The Queen of Canada
I would argue that we should maintain the Crown of Canada.
I would suggest that Her Majesty the Queen of Canada has never caused harm to Canada, nor has she ever attempted to overstep her bounds as the head of state and interfere in the affairs of the elected Government of Canada. The purpose of the Crown is to be the nexus of executive power as a non-political body, and this continued to be the case as intended at Confederation.
As for the Lieutenant Governors of the Provinces and the Governors General of Canada, these people serve extremely important functions. They are a "last-ditch" check on the power of Governments—a metaphor given by one expert in particular which I find extremely appropriate and accurate, is giving these vice-regal representatives the nickname as "constitutional fire-extinguishers." We hope, of course, that their expansive powers are never needed, but it's comforting to know that they're there.
Besides, who but the Governors General and the Lieutenant Governors would promote unity and the culture of the Provinces and Canada? The Prime Minister? The Premiers? They don't have time for that. The Governor General has been spending this year travelling about the country, making beautiful speeches and working to inspire co-operation and dialogue among the different regions in Canada—is Harper doing that? No, of course not! And that's not his fault—he just wouldn't ever have the time to do those kinds of more cultural, personal things.
