Canada’s undocumented workers could gain a new avenue to permanent residency through a program under development by the federal government to tackle the underground economy. It is a turning point for some of the 500,000 undocumented residents estimated to be in Canada. Many work precarious and often exploitative jobs in construction, cleaning, caregiving, food processing and agriculture.
Very interesting. I've never really thought about it from a canadian context before. The US talks about it all the time but every 'undocumented' worker i've ever met was a Auzzie and frankly they're not doing any harm so i never really gave it thought
But, setting aside the American style debates on the subject, what SHOULD our policy be with regards to undocumented people? Part of me says if they're here and they're not involved in any (other) crime, and they're productive and would have met our immigration standards then what the heck. It's not like we don't let in all kinds of people who just walk across the border anyway. Another part of me says that just invites abuse.
