Hi hermanntrude,thanks for the post.

From what I've heard, loss of the "I" (or ego death) can be terribly frightening, and also enormously enlightening.

Well ,I don't know hermanntrude ; I haven't bought the ticket yet ,did not board the ship ,have not crossed the oceans so I truly don't know what's on the other side .
Hey ' I don't even know where to buy the ticket .

lately I've been waking up in the mornings a blank slate. It's been taking an excrutiating few seconds to remember not only where I am, but who I am. I figure that's about as close as I'll ever come to 'forgetting the I.'

owch, china.

I've never experienced ego death. But I am very interested in it. So like any good researcher, I researched it. Listened to what people have to say about it. I've read numerous books on this kind of thing and listened to many people's tales of what they experienced. Also I've never been much good with meditation, although I have done it, and i've never experienced ego death that way either, so again, all I have is what people tell me and what i've learned from reading and deduction.

As for your final question, I think, observe and reason for myself all the time. It's my job, too. Perhaps you'd like to see my thesis, in which I added to the sum knowledge of humankind?

Wow. I'd quit talking to you right about then.

When dealing with a topic like you are discussing, how exactly is Hermann to know anything about it, short of second hand accountings, when he has explained he's never been through it himself? Being humble and explaining that your knowledge is second hand, not from personal experience, is not something deserving of such scorn.

neither have I hermanntrude , please understand what I'm saying.

Here you go again , comparing yourself to others (like any good researcher); why do you do that?

So have I ,but I've forgot them all , second hand knowledge , the answer is in your self.

You can't learn how to meditate from others. If you would like ....look at my post re. meditation Meditation ...again.-philosophy forum .

Dear hrermanntrude ,I don,t need to read your thesis (though thanks for the offer) I,m sure that it based on what you read or what other people would say.If this sounds like a "vulgar" answer to your statement - it is not meant to be.

I am very sorry that you think my words are insulting other responders to my topic .It is absolutely not my intention to "downgrade" anyone or whatever else you think that I'm doing .

you could do amazing things for your life in that moment....all you need to do is think of what you want and when you wake up fill in that blank you with the you want to e...materialistic ideals would be easiest to start with Karrie.People would do anything to have what you have at that moment.

it's part and parcel to quantum physics..it works

yeah it's kinda hard to relate to....it's like fooling your neural net into jump starting a new cycle..the neural net's sort of stupid and will do your bidding like it does other things we don't really like....

i'm into majik...don't think i've got the right equipment....Karrie might.

I compare myself to others because I am one of them. We're all part of the same thing and trying to pretend that others have nothing to offer you is arrogant.

if i can't learn to meditate from others, why are you trying to tell me how to?

My thesis was based on rigorous experiment. 3 years of it. That's the point. Technically it should be impossible to earn a PhD without learning something no-one else knew, by your own methods. That's why I brought it up. When the times comes, I'm perfectly capable of finding truth for myself, but if someone else already found it, why shouldn't I ask them about it? It might make the testing of it a lot easier for me.

China, is english your second language? I ask because maybe that's why your statement:
,can you ever think , observe , and reason for your self ?
Caused some bristling. I took you to mean it as a non judgemental question but that was based on you having english as a second language, and typing with an accent

To further Hermann's point, what are libraries a shining example of? Accumulated wisdom and our collective ability to learn from and build upon, another's experiences and thoughts.

I absolutely, positively learn from others - I have to. I am not so arrogant to think I have figured out everything for myself - nor am I always the final judge of the ethical rightness of everything.

It is easy enough to imagine situations where there is nowhere near enough information for me to make my own evaluations, and the most reasonable course of action is to trust those I have known for some time, and to provisionally go along with what they say.

I'll not bother to provide an example now, but if you want one, you have but to ask.

Another important thing to mention is that to think of another as somehow lacking because they learn from others rather than themselves, is, in and of itself, comparing yourself to others.

Typing with an accent?? I've heard talking with an accent, I reckon actually everybody has an accent which is why there are British accent, Australian accent etc. amongst native English speakers, but never heard of typing... I suppose it's just his train of thoughts and writing style that can be hard to comprehend.
China said once he's Polish (if my memory served me correctly) living in China so he speaks Chinese too. Why not ask what he meant by the bristling statement with a simpler sentence? :)

Typing with an accent??

Unless your perfectly fluent in a language you type with an accent. You forget to type certain words just like you forget to use them while speaking. Often times resorting to phonetic spelling of words. Usually if original language spoken is vastly different then english it's more noticeable.

Why not ask what he meant by the bristling statement with a simpler sentence?
Because I was also showing those who were offended by the sentence that it might have been typed that way by an ESL poster.

Might be best for me to post my sentences the way I like,k?
