I find these places fundamentally different, and generally preference depends on personality. Calgary strikes me as a nice place to have a home, live in a suburbs with a good job. Edmonton, well the economy isnt quite as strong as calgary's (although it is still in alberta and better than most canadian cities). Edmonton is more artsy, not quite as polished, with a more trees. Thats the first thing i noticed about calgary...almost no trees. Edmonton has more festivals and more "soul" if you will. I much prefer edmonton, as you can probably already see in the oozing bias in what I say. Calgary holds alberta's economy, but edmonton has the culture. If you want a bigger city feel, Edmonton isnt for you. More effort is put into obscure festivals and cultural events than trying to be 'big'.

"I've lived in a few Canadian cities and definitely wouldn't put Calgary in the top 10 cities in Canada to live. It might have made the top ten up until the mid 80's but since then it's deteriorated into a sprawling amorphous mega-suberbia that has all the character of a dead stick. It's a cultural wasteland in search of more pavement, plastic, steel all built around the latest Walmart and Superstore.

I DO like the location of Calgary....that's why I live here. I like being able to get out of the sprawl and in an hour be hiking in the mountains with no one around. I DO like the Calgary weather...great activities in both winter and summer. "

i agree with the first paragraph. I can not stand the weather in alberta on the other hand.

edmonton and calgary have nothing to offer me, i rarely leave red deer county, maybe once or twice a year, usually to have thanksgiving or christmas supper at gramps house all the way down in mountain view county. i try not to go further south than mountainview becaause it gets too close to calgary.

ok u ppl have got to stop picking on Edmonton, and yes Edmonton roads will seem like highways if u fools drive on whitemud at 40 freekin km/hr. maybe if u ppl drive the speed limit and not 30km/hr below it our roads will seem like any other city. gz

and some ppl say Edmontonians cant drive???? give me a break! i went to Calgary this Christmas and i was shocked that over 55% of the population donno how to accelerate without making it sound like a street race. i hear so many honks at other drivers, ppl swearing.... like... good god is Calgary the Canadian New York City or something? the most pathetic/funny thing that ever happened while i was in Calgary was when we were at the drive way waiting to turn onto some streen downtown (cant remember lol) and we were like 6 meters away from the road and this A**HOLE driving a moving truck stopped just in front of our car and was honking that ugly horn that trucks got at us. also yelling (almost screaming like a girl) telling us to move our car! for god sakes we were 6 freekin meteres away from the effin road u prick! even a transit bus got by with no problem... (what a loser) he was honking for about 2 minutes too! untill finally he learned to push the medal and get lost. (i swear i was laughing at him for like 2 hours)

sry for long post i just had to express myself after i read those posts P.S- there is nothing wrong with Edmonton now, i live in millwoods and it is a wonderfull place of the city. killing, crime.... like wtf thats no more that was in like 2000 u ppl need to look at the crime rate as of NOW and stop looking at the past. iam sure Calgary's crime past wasent the best ethier. and just to mention Edmonton's economy had the highest growth rate in Canada! so.... Calgary may be a little better city at the time but in as little as 2 more years it will be reversed as oil companies are moving north and that = Edmonton becomes the #1 Alberta city so u Calgaryians can leave us alone pls and thank you, if u want a city to pick on look at L.A or NY.

I have to STRONGLY disagree there. Edmonton may be a "blue collar" city and I know that the "white collar" Calgary snobs look down on that but that statement is just not true. There is a reason the U of A Hospital and Stollery Children's Hospital attracts world renowned Physicians who could go anywhere in the world but choose Edmonton. If Calgary was so "great" I think they'd be there, would they not? I haven't heard too many great things about research coming out of Calgary and the "wonderful" University that is there, yet there is always something being said of Edmonton .. Calgary just cannot compete on that level - sorry.

Another thing, Calgary's sports teams have always been quite inferior to Edmonton's - 1 Stanley cup for Calgary vs. 5 for Edmonton. I know it's in the past but it's something that still bugs the sports fans of Calgary which is why they always bring it up. Just because Calgary had a good run in 2004, doesn't mean they'll EVER get that far again, infact the word "chokers" comes to mind

I have. And having done so, Edmonton for me wins hands down as the better of the two cities. Calgary was ok, but I find the city a little too self-concious for my taste. Too much trying to be Toronto of the west to suit me. Now Toronto..there is a great city. I love Toronto!

Both are quality places to live

I think both Cities offer their own benefits. I have lived in Edmonton for 15yrs and frequenly visit friends and family in Calgary. I can tell you from speaking to these people that Calgary has the same issues as edmonton in terms of homelessness, lack of skilled workers, housing costs, etc.. Both cities have metro areas just over a million and have issues relating to transportation. Edmonton is more blue collar and has some nasty parts, Calgary not so much. Edmonton has a nicer river valley and more outdoors green space (has the largest metro borial forest in north america), it has better sports teams and a greater sports history. It has the mall, plenty of theatres, the most restaurants per capita in Canada, and some awesome night lift. Calgary seems to have a nicer downtown, fewer low income neighbourhoods, and more high paying jobs at the executive level. More american's live and work in Calgary than any other Canadian city. Most of the friends from Calgary were ONCE residents in Edmonton and moved to Calgary. Almost to a person they identified one major issue that would be the deal breaker for me. That being the difference in culture and summer recreation within the city. Edmonton has more festivals than any city in Canada so if you like the Fringe, Music City Festival, Heritage days, Street performers festival, Jazz Festivals, etc, etc, etc Edmonton can't be touched by any City, period. In the end, this is a personal choice but most of the people I know (with a few exceptions) would happily remain in Edmonton for the rest of their lives.

Just to establish my credentials: I lived in Edmonton as a grad student at the U of A for two years in the 1970s, and have visited both Edmonton and Calgary many times since, for personal and professional reasons. I have a brother in Edmonton, and for the last decade of my working life before I retired in 2005 I had staff in Edmonton and Calgary.

I much prefer Edmonton over Calgary. Edmonton seems just a bigger version of Saskatoon, where I spent the first 23 years of my life and still think of as home. A lovely river runs through them. Calgary seems to think it's part of Texas, and in my experience has a larger percentage of unthinking far right lunatics than any other place in Canada. And every time I drive anywhere in Calgary, every other driver on the road appears to be absolutely furious about something.

Saskatchewan's home to me, and forever will be, but Edmonton's a close second.

Calgary

I am a 17 year old 5th generation Albertan, 4th generation Calgarian which is quite difficult to find here nowadays. I visted Edmonton many times in the past usually for a football game. During my last vist there at the labour day classic a few years back, i was quite shocked when so much disrespect was directed towards me. I realize yes, I was at a football game and wearing a stamps jersey, but that was all. I did not go overly excessive with my cheering nor did i put down Edmonton fans. By the end of the game i was having trash and food thrown in my direction followed by trash talk and then things turned from bad to worse. Some kind of soda was dumped on my head when the second the game was over, ruining my signed Dave Dickenson jersey. Edmonton won that game and yet they were still so rude to me. I have not been back since. I have not changed my opinion of Edmonton becasue of that incident, I believe strongly that it's a great city...except for the fact that the govenment spent a whole bunch of money trying to change the "City of Champions" motto and ended up leaning it the way it was, that was silly.
Although I must say the sports fans are a little too aggressive but so are Calgarys'. I think that the disrespect and rivalry between the cities has got to stop. There was even a news report when Ed Stelmach got elected saying that Edmonton was happy that the person that the majority of their city voted for got elected over Calgarys' choice. Thats absolutely ridiculous! You know it's bad when cities are competing with each other over premiers. I believe we should come together as a province and quit being so selfish. Being proud of your city is great and all but it has gone too far. Calgarians...quit abusing Edmontonians. Edmontonians quit abusing Calgarians. I mean you can't help where your from. It's not my fault I was born Calgarian. I love my city but i make sure when I go to another Country or province and someone asks me where im from I always say Alberta because as a whole we are a beautiful and proud province. The Province will always be more beautiful and spectacular then Calgary or Edmonton individually.
