I think they sprinkle MSG on all packaging these days to induce that addiction to shopping

You seem to think that this is being forced on you or something though. You sound scared, actually. Buy Nothing Day is purely voluntary, James. Just a suggestion for a way to say no to crass and over-commercialised society that values shopping for plastic crap over all else.

Well Rev, you go tell your next door neighbor that he can't get his sound system or LCD TV for half price. Something he's been waiting all year to buy. Let's see what he'll say.

Rev, you're not getting the point. Being voluntary, if many folks did stay home and not shop on the busiest shopping day of the year, the businesses would not be able to sell many of their merchandise at low prices. They rely on the high volume of buyers.

I don't think you get it. I think you are scared that somebody might upset your little plastic applecart of consumerism.

You are trying to convince us that everybody has to go out and buy crap because you have some sort of Barbie Doll fetish or GI Joe fantasy or something. We not only don't have to participate, but are allowed to encourage pthers not to participate as well.

so what?? What is it that you are so afraid of?? That you might not get that good deal on some expensive luxury item....that might be replaceable in just a few yrs.?? Or the shopping /consumerism withdrawl symptoms if you chose to not shop??

No, I'm not suggesting that folks should go out and start buying stuff simply cause it's the day after thanksgiving. However, I'm also not going to suggest encouraging others to not shop. It's an equal sided argument. I don't suggest to shop nor do I suggest not do. We are all free to do what we want.

You are also suggesting that we not suggest that others stay home, yet at the same time through your very lifestyle, or at least the one you project on this board, you encourage consumerism at all costs.

I'm suggesting that everybody stay home on Buy Nothing Day. Not only shouldn't you buy anything, you should refuse to participate. No work, no school, no sitting in the bar ogling naked dancing girls. For that one day, just shut everything down.

Nonsense they've purchased the merchandise anyway. If the product isn't selling that drives the price down anyway. They may not have the one day push....but over a short period of time their margin is higher and the customer usually gets as good a deal (if not better) than holding ridiculous one day events.

Shopping on Black Friday? Ha! Never! It's insane shopping that day anyway. Last several years I do my shopping online, except for shoes

Hey, James,
Did you see that spectacular deal on an HP notebook at Walmart?
$398 - a nice one too. If I didn't have one on the way (a notebook), I'd go for that. It's one of the best deals I've seen.
