You wouldn't survive one week in a bungalow in Detroit.

Sure we would. We'd bring food from Windsor. And, we'd sew Canadian flags on our backpacks.

Today, the population of Detroit is the same as it was in 1910 (Forbes, 2015). I am certain before the automobile, Detroit was a peaceful, albeit bucolic, backwater.

I know this is not as good as it sounds, after all, $500 USD is over $625 CDN. But think about it, you could have that American hideaway for the price of 100 Big Macs with fries. And, Detroit is an NHL contender. Having to talk American is not that difficult.
$500 US Detroit homes may be no bargain due to squatters and unpaid taxes - Business - CBC News

Anyone game?

Then you have to pay all the back taxes, then you have to get the present tenants out, then there's likely years of neglected upkeep to contend with and then you might want to check up on the neighbours! You generally get exactly what you pay for. :)

Could move into a 1978 Ford Econoline behind the rec center in The Pas MB for free but it's probably safer in Detroit.

An arena chocked full of Canadians who refuse to lower themselves by going to a Leafs game.

Which raises another point- Buffalo is 100 miles from Toronto, which kind of indicates to me that they need a third N.H.L. team in the area like I need another ear. :)

3rd? The Leafs aren't a hockey team. The fruitcakes from Ice Capades have better odds of hoisting the Stanley Cup above their heads in victory.
