So Pete, if GMOs and such are so great please explain this story.

From Facebook:

Nearly 40 million bees in 600 hives dead at Saugeen Country Honey Farm, family owned by David & Hendrika Schuit of Elmwood, Ontario.

"Local beekeepers are finding millions of their bees dead just after corn was planted here in the last few weeks. Dave Schuit, who has a honey operation in Elmwood, lost 600 hives, a total of 37 million bees."

I will be adding local contact information of public officials that you can call, email fax or write to address your concerns regarding the bees. Please check back for updated information.

At this time we are talking with farmers & working to put together a petition to stop the use of neonicotinoids in Canada for everyone to be able to sign. We will update this post in the days to follow with a link for an international petition. Check back here for new information added to this post or LIKE the page & follow our future posts.

We need to work together to protect our pollinators and end the deaths caused by neonicotinoids and other harmful pesticides that are killing not only our honey bees but also our songbirds, butterflies, fish and many other lives lost. Do we want to coat our food seeds in this deadly toxin and eat it or feed it to our livestock? No, we don't. We must all find a solution to this before it is too late and for this reason there needs to be a moratorium in place to suspend and/or ban the use of these deadly pesticides and further study the impact.

**I feel it is very necessary to raise the question "Why is this not being reported?" This happened just down the road. There is virtually nothing in local & mainstream media about this catastrophic die off. Something of this magnitude should be global headline news. I urge you & your friends to please forward this story to your local media... EVERYWHERE! Search results using Google News "Elmwood Ontario bees" only produces 3 hits. This story needs to go mainstream/viral & be picked up by media. Thankfully it will get the attention of many outraged connected users via social networking & blogging or this would continue to remain silent.

UPDATE RE MEDIA: Thankful that after 24 hour and some shaking the hive, media locally anyways is starting to pay attention. This story is now hitting CBC, CTV and I would expect others. With more people becoming aware of this issue and speaking out in defence of the bees and everything else being affected by these deadly posions governments will have no choice but to listen and act.

Thank you all for your support. Please like the links of the farms we mention to show your support directly to those on the front lines, our farmers!

What does this have to do with GMOs? Sure they're used in conjunction with pesticides, but the deaths haven't been attributed to GMO pollen. As your link clearly states, they are linked to a class of insecticides called Neonicotinoids. As far as Neonicotinoids are concerned, there are no GMOs crops registered in Canada for use in conjunction with Neonicotinoids, because there is no benefit in producing a genetically modified corn crop for Neonicotinoids when Neonicotinoids are not toxic to plants.

Check for yourself:
http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/gmf-agm/appro/index-eng.php

That's a list of GMO products approved for use in Canada. None are registered for use with clothianidin or thiamethoxam, the Neonicotinoids pesticides Health Canada found in 80% of bee yards where dead bee samples were taken from.

Ironically, a genetically modified corn that is resistant to pests would mean less need for insecticide use. Or, better management practices concerning application of clothianidin and thiamethoxam.

Either way, this story has naught to do with genetically modified corn:

LMFAO!!! I'm glad you all have all this spare time to babble about GMO BS instead of spending your time trying feeding yourselves.
