Trump 'considering draft order to scrap Nafta'

The Trump administration has drafted an executive order that would withdraw the US from the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta), US media say.

It is unclear whether President Donald Trump will follow through and strike down the deal, which eliminated tariffs between the US, Mexico and Canada.

In the election he vowed to withdraw from the 23-year-old pact, calling it a US job killer.

He pulled the US out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) in January.

According to Politico, two White House officials said the Nafta draft order could be unveiled this week or early next week.

Trump's trade agenda: Just what are his priorities?

It is not clear whether the administration is simply floating the proposal as a hardball negotiating tactic, however.

The plan comes days after the US imposed a new tariff on softwood lumber coming from Canada.

Mr Trump also called a new Canadian tariff regime affecting US dairy products a "disgrace".

On Tuesday, the US lost a trade battle with the other Nafta signatory.

The World Trade Organization ruled that Mexico could impose more than $160m (£125m) annually in sanctions against the US on commerce in tuna, capping a dispute dating to 2008.

You all knew that this was a strong possibility. The GOP has historically backed NAFTA and the American Left was agin it. Perhaps, Pence will have another "fatherly talk" with Trump and it all goes away, next week.

A return to slavery comes through an executive order during the second term.

If the US pulls out of NAFTA, they will want to replace it with something else. There's a lot of Americans and businesses making money and depending on trade with Canada. And not just working people, but rich people the Republicans actually care about. So Trump's threat is meaningless. Is he going to pull out of NAFTA and leave behind no trade deal between us? Of course not. He will want to negotiate something before NAFTA is cancelled, which is basically renegotiating NAFTA.

Buy Americans is code for ....

I'm very anti-NAFTA.. it killed alot of Manufacturing jobs in Canada..

We need to roll back our trade to pre-FREE Trade days, we've lost to many good paying jobs which were replaced by Call Centre and service jobs that pay a fraction of the wages.

Free Trade and NAFTA only benefited the CEOs and Multinational Corporations.

Canada does not have a lot of leverage. Our one main customer, whom we sell 80% of our products to, can pretty well dictate the terms of most trade agreements.

That's what you get when you don't want to build pipelines, lean to build your own cars, subsidie aircraft industry etc etc.

As we say in the West, when it comes to trade, Canada is sucking the hind tit.

Geez Durp... You should crack a book or open Google one in a while. We don't need to learn how to build cars or airplanes. We need to learn that the United States is not to be trusted by anyone. They're great at buying up the competition, trucking out the machinery and closing down the works. No need to take my word for it ... just Google. You don't have to look American all your life

Durry has a point we are in an awkward position because we have relied on America too much.
Take lumber here in the Okanagan one company is not concerned with Trump and his tariff.
The reason is the last time America pulled this crap Goreman Brothers went out and found new
customers for high quality product and they now deal with 30 countries the USA is not so big
with them.
Now the rest of the country should get off its duff and find alternate markets and perhaps we can
avoid this nonsense in the future I think the moment he dissolves we should cut the Canadian
supply on the electrical power grid for starters

Canada might have more leverage than expected. Most autos sold in Canada are from US firms. Canadians are also massive buyers of US farm products, especially during winter. Tariffs on those products would have a number of US states screaming and given the way most US elections go even losing a few states can really change an election. Not only that, but higher tariffs on Canadian goods are a little like cutting off your nose to spite your face. Americans are used to cheap imports and raising the prices on those goods will not go down well.

I remember during a continent-wide power failure about a dozen years ago some American posters going on and on about the Canadian connection to the continental electrical grid and "...why are these foreigners allowed on OUR grid?..." They had no clue that it was for export, not import. These guys were convinced that we were TAKING something from them! Doesn't the whole world want to TAKE things from the USA?.

Quebec, alone, powers half of New England. Good luck finding a New Englander who knows that.
