Gaza: Canadian Union of Postal Workers calls for boycott

9 January 2009 | Posted in Boycott, Canada, Palestine

  1. Canadian Union of Postal Workers, January 7th, 2009.
Photo: Palestinians in Gaza on Friday prayed next to the bodies of the Salha family.
On behalf of the 56,000 members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, I am writing to demand that the Canadian government condemn the military assault on the people of Gaza that the state of Israel commenced on December 26th, 2008.

Canada must also call for a cessation of the ongoing Israeli siege of Gaza, which has resulted in the collective punishment of the entire Gaza population.
Canada must also address the root cause of the violence: Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories.
Israel’s current actions are totally out of proportion with any notion of self-defense. Israel’s actions are resulting in the massacre of people in Gaza.
Israels action will not bring peace to the region. they will result in Israel being less secure.
Professor Richard Falk, the UN’s Special Rapporteur for Human Rights in the Occupied territories, has characterized the Israeli offensive as containing “…severe and massive violations of international humanitarian law as defined in the Geneva Conventions, both in regards to the obligations of an occupying power and in the requirements of the laws of war.”
CUPW strongly urges the Canadian government to condemn the serious violations of humanitarian and international law by the state of Israel.
The Israeli Government’s siege and military incursions into Gaza are not isolated events. It is a direct result of Israel’s ongoing occupation of Palestine and the refusal of the Israeli government to abide by numerous United Nations security council resolutions.
Therefore, as a longer term strategy, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers is asking your government to adopt a program of boycott, divestment and sanctions until Israel recognizes the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and complies with international law, including the rights of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes as stipulated in UN resolution 194.
Yours truly,
Denis Lemelin

If the Postal Workers are against it, it's just gotta be bad, as Postal Workers are
all about utilizing proportional force....not wanting to be accused of "going Postal"
or something along those lines.

The postal workers union are idiots. Their job is to deliver mail, not to get involved with politics. What they say and a loonie won't buy you a Tims....

hmmm. Has anybody ever thought of boycotting the Postal Union?

It better not happen as we may realize that with the proliferation of the internet, parcel post (UPS, etc) they may become even more redundant than they are now

That's closer then you might think. Postage is on the way up another 2 cents. How to do yourself out of a job for just 2 cents!

Me too, Missile. It got worse and worse as time went on. And ours was a small depot. Couldn't imagine the horse**** one had to deal with in the big centres.

Luckily, I was a carrier, so only had to endure the place a few hours a day. That was freakin enough.

Ah..............the golden years.

56,000 postal workers can't be all wrong. In any case they certainly have a right to an opinion, an opinion shared by millions around the world.

Yep, I remember way back in 1969-70, when I was a 16 year old wild eyed radical (see pic in my photo album :)) I knew a guy, a true leftist "intellectual" that was trying to set up a wing of the Students for a Democratic Society right here in Saint John........

The next I heard of him was 20 years later, when a mutual friend of myself and his wife told me he got a little roughed up in an Protestant Irish pub in Northern Ireland for preaching "the Cause". (The Prods must have recognized his intellectual deficit.....he survived)

Next time I saw him?

Couple of years ago, delivering mail.

Yep.

Saint John mail guys, can you recognize this fellow????? CW as it were.

I've been in a few pubs in Northern Ireland and standing up and voicing an opinion, any opinion, is probably not a great idea. Sometimes, just looking like you have an opinion can get you in trouble. ;-)

Yeah, I have a good friend that teaches history at UNB.......he got his doctorate in Dublin, and has spent a lot of time in both the South and North, starting in the early 1960s........he likes Pubs, but says there is a certain decorum necessary :)
