FORT BRAGG, N.C. — Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who in 2009 walked off a U.S. military outpost in eastern Afghanistan and spent the next five years in enemy captivity, was sentenced Friday to a dishonorable discharge from the Army but will avoid prison time.

I think that's appropriate. The rumour that 6 soldiers died in the massive search for Bergdahl has been debunked by the commander of his unit. No one died although there were serious injuries. He spent 5 years under imminent threat of execution, torture and in subsistence conditions. And a dishonourable discharge carries with it a life long stigma and the loss of medical insurance, pensions, benefits for veterans. It's not insignificant and it's enough.

A Dishonorable Discharge is winning?

You of all people should know better.

No one died or was wounded.

People were wounded. One is paralyzed and was part of the prosecution.

He spent 5 years under imminent threat of execution in subsistence conditions.

Then perhaps he should not have deserted to the enemy. It was his own doing.

And a dishonourable discharge carries with it a life long stigma and teh loss of medical insurance, pensions, benefits for veterans. It's enough.

It carries a heck of a lot more than the penalties you just mentioned. That is why I don't really care that he is not going to do jail time. He's SCREWED in the civilian world.

Freedom of morals.
One of the many things you sign away when you join up. I know, in your mind it will be forever 1968, and American soldiers will be hapless conscripts, but in the real world we've had an all-volunteer force for almost half a century. And yes, it is explained to you in great and painstaking detail exactly what you're getting into.

Don't forget, we're all still poor kids from the cities with no opportunities... so we had no other choice.

See it's because the EEE-vil Republicans didn't give us all free rides to Harvard. Don't mention the fact that I signed up under Carter. That would be. . .

I respect the people who enlist in the Armed Forces.
Half of 'em are a waste of oxygen. Most of 'em come out better people than they went in. Like every other human endeavor, it has its successes and its failures. But having been a laborer, a soldier, a civilian government worker, a professional, and a small business owner, I think the best deal for a young woman or man starting out, to get a view of and be given a chance to get real responsibility in the real world, and learn what it means to be an adult, the service is hard to beat.

We never had a chance man.
We're the dregs. Dumb-ass Southie boy, Okie Indun, ghetto black, barrio Hispanic, ignorant redneck, coal miner's daughter. We are the scum of the earth, brainwashed to shed our blood for the international bankers.

That's one fine-looking Indun boy!

Hunh. Chief Shoot-em-Down.

The song long pre-dates the Black Sheep. It's a Scottish song from way back.
