Biden remarks on US–China ‘Taiwan Agreement’; Chinese whistleblower confesses to Uyghur torture

In China’s Shanxi Province, authorities warn of more landslides to come as the region faces continued heavy rains. Another deadly infectious disease has appeared in China. The bacteria was transmitted from birds to humans. For the first time, a Chinese police officer is speaking out about the torture of Uyghur detainees—something he says he was routinely ordered to perform. Beijing might be ready for a “full-scale” invasion of Taiwan by 2025, based on a warning from the Taiwanese defense minister. But how are Taiwanese people responding? And what does President Joe Biden have to say? Japan is taking action to deter Beijing. The country has stayed strictly on the defensive after World War II. But it may soon update that strategy to cope with Beijing’s aggression.

Is Being the World’s Dominant Chip Supplier a Blessing or Curse to Taiwan? | Zooming In China

In January 2019, Xi Jinping delivered his most important Taiwan policy speech in the six years since he came to power. Xi declared that unification with Taiwan is one of the most important parts of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. In fact, Taiwan must unite with China, and China would not kick the can down the road forever. Did he imply that if a peaceful unification is not achievable, China will take over Taiwan during his lifetime and under his leadership? Now, the whole world is depending on Taiwan for chips. How has this impacted America’s determination to protect Taiwan? I had these discussions with Rupert Hammond-Chambers, President of the US-Taiwan Business Council. Take a listen.

Chinese vegetable prices skyrocket; Alibaba yearly stock loss breaks record | China in Focus

Amid high tensions between China and Taiwan, President Tsai Ing-wen answers a question that no Taiwanese president has in the past 40 years: whether American troops are stationed on Taiwanese soil. A veteran in Taiwan tells how, as a soldier, he shot from an island at Chinese ships. That spot lies just 2 miles from China’s coast. U.S. President Joe Biden says America’s commitment to Taiwan is “rock solid.” In a major stock fall, China’s largest tech company Alibaba has lost nearly $350 billion in the world’s biggest wipeout. Flooding, power shortages, and strict pandemic prevention measures are all sending food prices soaring in China. Some vegetables are reportedly twice as expensive as before. A renowned doctor in Australia urges banning all Chinese surgeons from Western hospitals, saying they knowingly help cover up communist China’s forced organ harvesting industry.

US invites Taiwan to democracy summit, irks China; Living with China’s strict COVID-19 measures

Chinese health authorities are welding people’s doors shut, locking people inside with steel chains, and lining hallways with barbed wire. The tactics seek to block people from leaving their homes. Beijing’s zero-COVID policy is an effort to completely eliminate the virus from inside Chinese borders. We look at what it really means for Chinese citizens. For the first time in decades, Taiwan will join talks with more than 100 countries as ITSELF–not as part of China. The U.S. invited the self-ruled island to its “Summit for Democracy.” JPMorgan CEO cracks a joke, that his bank will outlast China’s Communist Party. But Beijing may not be so amused. And China sends out a flurry of “proof of life” videos amid global outcry for a Chinese tennis star. But the clips have done little to ease concerns. We hear more from a former U.S. Senator on what’s going on.

China censors story of tennis player Peng Shuai; Countries consider a diplomatic boycott of Olympics

The United States is grappling with the global microchip shortage. And at the center of the crisis is Taiwan—home to the world’s biggest chipmaker. China’s debt-trapped real estate developer is back in the spotlight. Evergrande’s chairman sold his shares to save the company, while another shareholder sold to save himself. Beijing takes new action in its clampdown on Chinese internet giants. This time, it’s targeting China’s version of Facebook. The Chinese Communist Party is covering things up, again. Photos and videos about Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai were made public outside China. But in China, they are censored. A Seattle man returns home after being held hostage in China for four years. Alongside his return, the United States released seven prisoners back to China. In the waters surrounding Taiwan and Japan, five countries are holding a joint military drill. They’re looking to counter Beijing’s aggression there.

37 deaths tied to Chinese prison since 2001; Facebook, Twitter remove China’s fake accounts

The United States reiterates its "rock solid" commitment to Taiwan's defense. And the former Japanese prime minister said Japan and the United States could not stand by if China attacked Taiwan. Hundreds of Taiwan nationals abroad are being extradited every year—not to Taiwan, but to China. And it’s all linked to Beijing's "One China policy." U.S. Congress members are working to teach children about the truth of communism. They tell NTD why they see it as a bigger threat now than ever before. Facebook and Twitter are taking action on accounts linked to Chinese propaganda campaigns. Thousands have already been removed. The deaths of nearly 40 women prisoners of conscience over two decades have been linked to a single prison in China—most recently, a woman close to 80 years old.

US won’t send officials to Beijing Olympics; Slovakia delegation visits Taiwan for talks

The United States says it will not send an official delegation to Beijing for the 2022 Winter Olympics over the regime’s human rights abuses. The United States chooses a clearer rhetoric toward China’s aggression in the Indo-Pacific. It’s set to help maintain America’s competitive upper hand over the communist regime. Another nation in Europe sends politicians to Taiwan. This follows last month’s visit by members of the European Parliament. China is putting U.S. officials on high alert, as the country seeks to build its first-ever naval military base on the Atlantic Ocean. More than 13,000 counterfeit products are seized after arriving from China. If the designer goods had been real, they’d be worth a combined total of over $30 million.
