For goats, look for a docile breed like Nubians. They don't jump fences as much as others, but if you live where there a lot of predators you need a breed with a good set of horns like Alpines. In the forest, I fenced them out, not in.
To me chickens are meat. They are nasty birds so I have no problem lopping off their beanies. I prefer ducks for eggs, Kaki(?) Campbell ducks lay eggs all year round and are a hell of a lot of fun to have around. Make sure to provide a good pond or pool.
Goats prefer to eat scrub brush, willows to grasses. Ducks will keep the mosquitoes down and mow your lawn.
