Forthwith, the BC NDP should pledge to dump the monthly medical premium residents have to pay. This is a tax on the poor and middle class that should be eliminated. The BC NDP are cowards for not ending it when they had the chance when were in power.

You see, it is an example of how the current BC NDP mainly support union working people, not ordinary, non-unionized working people. It really is a no-brainer and would get wide public support.

The only people that should not be paying provincial health premiums are the unemployed.

The rest should be paying the premium and it should be on a sliding scale where the people that get paid less should pay the least.

I like it how people are saying that it is a tax. Even John Tory A Progressive Conservative member that is the leader of that party says he will get rid of the premium.

Sure he will and he will get rid of public health care too and what will the people say then, will it be a big tax?

In Ontario everyone paid a premium on OHIP until the NDP got elected.

If anything we as tax payers should demand the federal government to reimburse us for that premium as a tax deduction.

Every Province that has a Premium also has a system of a sliding scale where by Low Income earners pay less for their Health coverage.

The Provinces that have no Premiums also have a higher Tax rate (to compensate for the lost revenue on Premiums perchance?) If you have any Tax program (QuickTax for instance) change the Province where it asks for your Province at Dec 31st. Manitoba pays the highest, followed closely by Newfoundland. and then Ontario.

Those that can have to pay some of the costs for use of the system, or pay more Taxes.

N-eed D-umbies to Pay think everyone should be poor except themselves and their friends.

I have been a New Democrat for years, at least I was until the Uggal campain, that still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. I was once a candidate and went through the whole election ordeal and I tell ya its not as easy as you think.
Liberalman is right, everyone should pay something as a contribution to society even if that contribution is only token amounts in tough times.
Eliminating the fee of some kind would lend the system to abuse, to needless use of the system and would cost one hell of a pile of money that could be used for education or infastructure.
As for so many people hounding politicians and saying they will say anything, that is not always true, and there are many good people in politics in all parties actually.
Why don't they just tell you like it is? Oh believe me you don't want that, I tried it, if you asked me a question I answered it. There were a lot of angry people at times, who didn't like hearing the truth.
I talked about government striving to be effective. My message be financially conservative and socially progressive. When you tell people we can't afford to impliment their pet project they get angry real quick.
Before the election was over I had people from all parties upset. Conservatives thought I was too liberal, New Democrats thought I was too conservative and I thought I was honest and for me thats what counted

What's in it for me to vote for the NDP? Cultural diversity? Rah rah multiculturalism? Hardly.

Ending medical premiums and creating a dental plan would give me greater financial/medical security. Not to mention complete portability of medical services across the country.

Then why didn't that boob Glen Clark get rid of it when he had the chance?

Well, services have to be paid for. In a country that encourages longevity like Canada does the burden of sustaining an ever increasing population of seniors never lightens. I am surprised we're able to carry on with the little we're taxed now for health care. It is enormously expensive and this is early on in the retiring of the boomer bulge. I'd just like to see services in Ontario expand enough to provide family doctors throughout the province. In most jurisdictions they're a luxury. This in a country that trumpets the benefits of public health care.

I am satisfied the way we do it now. I do not want the medicare to be hidden in taxes. We pay a
specific amount, up front, for our medical coverage, and I want it to stay that way.

It is ridiculous to suggest that we don't pay at all. If we want good medical coverage, we should be
willing to pay for it.

It will never be free, and shouldn't be, it's a huge expense.

What's the current word on the per capita cost of the Canadian public health care system vs. the private health care of the United States? Last data I saw made us out to be three times as efficient, but that was a while back.

Health care is the largest item our taxes pay for. We pay a premium of something like a $150 per month for Extended Medical and dental coverage. As long as nurses are short staffed and overworked we shouldn't be taking any money out of the system.

I don't know the stats, maybe someone else does, but there is far too much suffering in the U.S.
of people who can't pay, and don't have any other route to go, and the cost there for procedures
are staggering, as they are here, but they are absorbed within our health care costs, not by us
personally.

And, if some Canadians can go elsewhere and pay a high cost for a private procedure, go ahead,
that should be their perogative, and it takes some of the numbers off the waiting list and the
cost, as long as it doesn't damage our system as it is now.

Talloola- hidden in taxes? Canada is an democracy and expenditures are open for all to see.

The US is run by too many Type A, selfish, overly focussed, ignorant, mean people who think getting a bigger bank account is all that counts. Warren Buffet, the gazillionaire, pays only 17% tax. His secretary pays 34% tax. A model for the world? I think not.

Medical premiums need to be dumped by the BC gov't. Next provincial election if the NDP does not put this in their platform, I will not vote for them.

ah fer Krysakes - yes, let's stop asking people to pay for ANYTHING! Hell, just rely on Big Brother to give you every slurp of the formula-bottle that you need.

"Warren Buffet, the gazillionaire, pays only 17% tax. His secretary pays 34% tax." Source?

"Next provincial election if the NDP does not put this in their platform, I will not vote for them."
Your perogative.... last time I looked, this was still a democratically elected system - so DON'T vote for them.
Works for me....

Both countries pay roughly the same percentage of GDP on public health services.

I'm up for supplying my own police force, and pharmacy. I think I can probably also act in the capasity of my own liquor control board as well.

Here is the URL tenpacks that says Warren Buffet pays less taxes than his secretary, 17% vs 30%.

To be clear, Buffet pays a smaller percentage of his income to the US gov't in taxes than his secretary does. I also read this fact in the International Herald Tribune, Why this doesn't get more media space is beyond me. But then I only found out about it recently.

http://www.sltrib.com/opinion/ci_6552491

It is news to many people that the Republican party in their constant fear campaigns since Reagan have been raising taxes for for the middle classes and dropping them for the rich.

I have no trouble with people getting rich, even filthy rich, but the deal has to be top notch medical care for the masses-with dental care, good UI, and good housing for the masses. This is unfair?
