I have been a New Democrat for years, at least I was until the Uggal campain, that still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. I was once a candidate and went through the whole election ordeal and I tell ya its not as easy as you think.
Liberalman is right, everyone should pay something as a contribution to society even if that contribution is only token amounts in tough times.
Eliminating the fee of some kind would lend the system to abuse, to needless use of the system and would cost one hell of a pile of money that could be used for education or infastructure.
As for so many people hounding politicians and saying they will say anything, that is not always true, and there are many good people in politics in all parties actually.
Why don't they just tell you like it is? Oh believe me you don't want that, I tried it, if you asked me a question I answered it. There were a lot of angry people at times, who didn't like hearing the truth.
I talked about government striving to be effective. My message be financially conservative and socially progressive. When you tell people we can't afford to impliment their pet project they get angry real quick.
Before the election was over I had people from all parties upset. Conservatives thought I was too liberal, New Democrats thought I was too conservative and I thought I was honest and for me thats what counted
