A frontal assault, uphill, across open ground, against entrenched cannon and infantry - not always a wise move.

Indeed it was a mistake. But Lee thought his boys could do it.
Plus the attack on the Union right flank failed and none other but George Custer stopped the Rebel Cavalry from getting behind the Union lines.

It's amazing that Lee thought that, and yet everything I've read says he did.

My family went to Gettysburg many years ago. It was quite breathtaking, and it's amazing that as beautiful and rich as the fields look today, so much blood was spilled in them.
