Can't ever imagine not eating steak. What's life all about anyway if you can't clog your arteries a bit.

Ever try the grass fed steaks at whole foods.
Set you back at least 80 bucks for two big Tbones, but man they taste like those 50 cent ones Ma used to make.

My sister followed a vegan diet for years and abstained from meat. I saw her at my son's wedding last year and she was eating meat. I asked why the change and she told me as she got older she found she had to include meat in her diet to stay healthy.

Who exactly is being self-righteous and ignorant here?

I've seen one individual that's used the term "stupid" or a variation of it, mostly everyone else seems to be talking about what must have been ignored on the part of the parents before that child died. He or she certainly didn't die overnight from vitamin deficiency.

I think the reason we have molars is for meat eating, is it not? Best not to screw around with Mother Nature!

sorry...the thread just irritated me that's all... people think because everyone eats, everyone is an expert but it just isn't true.

People are calling "vegans" stupid, it's a stupid diet etc... I doubt these people even know a vegan or even the difference between a vegan and a vegetarian...

I know perfectly healthy people who have perfectly healthy kids who do not eat meat....do not eat eggs and whose kids have never drank milk.

People who eat meat aren't more nutrionally sound than others who choose to eat in other ways... there are fat meat eaters with health issues... so if their kids are obese, guess who helped them get that way? Perhaps they are gonna die young or end up on blood pressure pills, cholesterol pills, insulin pills or the needle, perhaps not...are the parents going to jail?

This is a horrible case...horrible..do we know any facts... where are the facts...it's one case... people in our society are dying from over eating and improper diet every day.

It's just bizarre to me. I've had this argument on here before and was basically called a moron by people who think they know, because they eat meat, but have likely done almost zero research on healthy nutrition...but they eat meat so they know.

It just rubbed me the wrong way when I read the thread. Nothing personal...just interesting that we have so many nutritionists who know so much about science and biology.

A vegetarian doesn't eat meat and a vegan won't eat anything that a meat eater has even looked at!

Well, here we have a case of a vegan, breast feeding her baby only, and that child dieing of malnutrition. What was the difference between her and the vast majority? She was a vegan, which meant no B12 and no vit A, at least. 5 years was far too little time as far as I'm concerned. As an adult you want to forgo meat and dairy, go for it, but you damn well better not put your child in harms way because of it, as happened here.

Strange. Of the top ten sources of Vitamin A, nine are vegan.

And two of the top ten sources of B12 are vegan.

Seems like Sal's right.

Vitamin A if a fat soluble vitamin, and therefore, needs to be consumed with fat in order to have optimal absorption.

Obviously the woman was not eating any "fortified"(processed) foods as the baby did have a B12 deficiency. Also not above that Vit A NEEDS to be consumed with fat to be absorbed. So, no, Sal is not right.

I don't know the difference between her and the vast majority...and neither does anyone else yet. There could have been many issues going on with her body, I do know of someone whose baby has died when breast feeding, it was called failure to thrive and often the reason is unidentified.

Obesity is the other end of the spectrum and more die of that in our society

What kind of quantities of all bran and tofu does one have to eat to get enough vitamin B12? Isn't it simpler just to eat a balanced diet which pretty well takes care of all the concerns? Sure there's exceptions like people who are allergic to peanuts shouldn't eat them, but for the majority doesn't a balanced diet work well?

Plenty of vegan sources of fat.

Yes, Sal is right. Her whole point was that the baby's death was caused by the woman was not eating properly, and that vegan need not be unhealthy or deficient.

I guess y'all missed that over your schoolyard chorus of "Vegans are STOOOO-PID!"

failure to eat meat does not equal an unbalanced diet
