Did the United States bring the attacks on the World Trade Center on itself? Many would say “yes.” Millions of people around the world were screaming “America has been hit!” This was not a shout of sorrow or pity, rather a shout of joy and triumph.

And guess what? We're still here. And by the way. And millions played the American national anthem in support of the US, and millions sent money in assistance, and millions held candlelight vigils.

America has a reputation of arrogance, ignorance and domination. This is what led to the attacks on September 11th. “The world doesn’t want to be American.”

America has NEVER dominated any country ANYWHERE in the world. We have wars for good or bad and then packed our bags and left

Though many aspects of American culture are looked upon with respect, others such as the strong desire for global capitalism, supported by military force and the neglect and destructiveness of the environment are looked down on with disgust.

Capitalism is a system that turns the economic engine of the planet. It certainly has its fair share of problems, but I don't recall enforcing this system on any by means of force. As far as the environment goes, we're the worlds biggest consumers, for now and helps sustain other economies as much as our own. Having said that, it sucks Bushco, isn't helping any, hopefully in the future more will be done.

The self-righteous belief that America’s way is the best way is without a doubt an attitude that other countries on the receiving end do not appreciate.

We have every right to think our way is the best way, just like you think the Canadian way is the best way. There is however an "imperialistic" way of thinking that democracy should be spread. I agree with you here.

The USA has imposed its power on countries all around the world, many times using military force. Understandably, a certain perception has been built up that America does whatever is necessary to have its way, even if it means using its military power to get it.

You exaggerate the issues somewhat. You may want to talk to a few countries that have welcomed American support.

Maybe then, the terrorists saw the destruction of the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon symbolic of economic power and military strength that America takes pride in.

Of course I did vote. I voted for my local representative who represents my party of choice. Whichever party has more votes, its leader becomes the PM. The PM appoints the ministers and the senate. The Governor general I think is appointed by the PM on the suggestion of the Queen.

Prior to 1913, our state legislators picked our national senators.

I don't think direct election of leaders proves any better than when our state legislators used to do it, or in the parliamentary system of members picking the leaders.

If you think about it, the parliamentary system is much like the American primaries and the parties picking the nominees. And then there's the electoral college, which I support as one more failsafe.

Everyone knows that if they vote for their parliamentary member they are also putting a vote indirectly for the Prime Minister, if he were to get the majority --- it's the coalition of non-majorities that gets a little dicey.

Anyway, America deserves what it gets, and everyone else gets a bye.
