Nature often tells us how harsh or mild a winter is gonna be, better than any meteorologist....
When I used to snare wild rabbits in the fall and if you have ever skinned rabbits you will know what I mean.

If the skin tore while peeling it off, it would mean a thin hide and a mild winter.
A thick skin that peeled off in one piece meant a hard cold winter....it never failed....

You must remember how the old Indian used to predict a hard winter....
