Well, another self appointed guardian of peoples’ morals, another hypocrite has been exposed.

Senator John Ensign (Republican, Nevada) has admitted to having an affair with his staffer. Ensign is a typical Republican, self righteous, mealy mouthed, telling other people how they should live their lives. This is what he had to say about Clinton in 1998 (he was in the House at that time).

"In 1998, while running for the Nevada’s senate seat against Harry Reid, Ensign called on President Clinton to resign in light of his admitted affair with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky:

“I came to that conclusion recently, and frankly it’s because of what he put his whole Cabinet through and what he has put the country through,” Ensign said Thursday, becoming the first member of the Nevada delegation to call for Clinton to quit. “He has no credibility left.”

And he was just getting started. He has been a leading conservative voice in the Senate, since he was elected to the Senate in 2000 (and again in 2006). This is what he had to say about Senator Larry ‘wide stance’ Craig, after Craig was caught in a homosexual act in Minnesota airport bathroom.

Since his election to the Senate in 2000, Ensign has been a leading conservative voice who demanded the resignation of former Idaho Sen. Larry Craig in September 2007. Ensign called Craig a “disgrace” after he was arrested in June 2007 in an airport men’s restroom on disorderly conduct charges. And he called upon him to resign.

Ensign has also been an ardent opponent of gay marriage. In Feb. 2004, Ensign announced his support for an amendment to the Constitution that would have defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman. Ensign said the amendment, which ultimately failed, was necessary to protect “the institution of marriage“:

So basically he is another Larry Craig. Anyway, since he has been so judgmental, so willing to condemn others, so uptight about politicians such as Clinton getting caught in an affair, since he called for their resignation, is Ensign himself talking of resigning? Don’t you believe it.

The guardians of peoples’ moral always have a different standard for themselves. So while Ensign thought that Clinton and Craig should resign, he has said that he will not resign. I think Nevada is a solidly Republican state (and conservatives don’t have any problem with hypocrisy, many of them don’t even understand the concept), so I assume he wouldn’t’ have any difficulty getting reelected in 2012.

But it is always a delicious irony when a card carrying member of the religious right, extreme right is exposed as a hypocrite.

what goes around comes around, and , another one bites the dust.

They never learn, Talloola. They preach one way of life and themselves live an entirely different way. Considering how fallible human nature is, you would think that they would stop preaching to the others, they would stop trying to impose their morality upon others (by preaching abstinence, banning abortions, banning gay marriages, by calling for resignation other politicians involved in scandals etc.). But they happily continue preaching the message of ‘do as I say, not as I do’.

Sounds rather like a socialist. They tend to have two sets of rules as well.
Glad he got caught though. Was the staffer male or female?

I'm still not understanding how calling out on Lary Craig was hypocritical.

The republicans preach about their 'high moral values', I've heard it a thousand
times, just a line to suck in the 'sheep'. Would love to be a fly on the wall
with many of them, after that microphone is put away.

The real hypocrit is one who defended Clinton every step of the way when Clinton defiled the Presidency and the Oval Office with an intern under the desk, and then lied under oath about it.

Sounds familar, SirJosephPorter? Brings back memories??

Calling on Craig to resign and then not resigning for doing pretty much the same thing himself is hypocritical.

Ensign called for Clinton to resign, because Clinton had an affair with his intern. He called on Craig to resign because he was caught in a homosexual incidence. Now Ensign himself has been caught in a similar situation.

If he had any integrity, any honesty, he would resign. Not resigning is hypocritical in the extreme. But then as I said many conservatives don’t even understand the concept of hypocrisy (as your question suggests).

Regarding Clinton incidence, let me see how many hypocrites I can recall.

There was Rep. Henry Hyde, the chairman of the committee which voted to impeach Clinton (in a purely partisan, politically motivated vote). Then it turned out that Hyde himself had fathered a child out of wedlock.

There was Gingrich, of course, the biggest hypocrite of them all. While he was ranting and raving against Clinton, wagging his finger at Clinton in a self righteous rage for having an affair with his intern, it turned out that Gingrich himself was doing exactly the same thing, having an affair with his intern.

Now we have Ensign, who demanded that Clinton resign. Now he has been caught doing pretty much the same thing himself, he has admitted to having sex with his staffer.

No doubt there are a few more which escape me at present.

Looking back, it is really comical to see all these stern Patriarchs of Republican Party, wagging their fingers at Clinton in admonition, while they have been helping themselves liberally to sex from their subordinates.

If Ensign called on people to resign based on an extramarital affair then it would be hypocritical. As of yet, you haven't provided any evidence of that. Clinton lied to congress and used the oval office for his romps. Craig was a homosexual trying to pick up men in a public bathroom. Not liking Ensign does not make him a hypocrite.

Indeed pgs, and conservative hypocrisy also has been with us from the beginning of times. Self appointed guardians of people’s morals, such as Gingrich, Ensign etc. have been preaching to the people since times immemorial how people should live their lives, while they themselves live to a different (and more relaxed standard).

So you are right, conservative hypocrisy is nothing new. All the same it is poetic justice when a far right, self righteous politicians is once again caught in the tangles web of hypocrisy.

It's not just conservatives that are hypocritical, it's people in general.

Not all people can be considered hypocritical, TenPenny. Not all people tell others how they should live their lives. If somebody does not preach to others, he is not guilty of hypocrisy.

Thus if a pro choice woman gets an abortion, she is not guilty of hypocrisy. But if a prolife woman gets an abortion (and there are plenty of prolife women who do get an abortion, if abortion clinics are to be believed), she is guilty of hypocrisy.

In the same way, if a liberal politician (who does not preach to others how they should live their lives) commits adultery, he is guilty of just that, adultery. Thus when it turned out that John Edwards had committed adultery, nobody accused him of being a hypocrite.

However, when a conservative (who preaches to others how they should live their lives) commits adultery, he is guilty of hypocrisy and of adultery. Thus Gingrich, Larry Craig or Ensign are guilty of adultery as well as hypocrisy (since they spent most of their political lives telling others not to commit adultery, to live virtuous lives according to the Bible).
