2 Outcomes When Foreigners Buy Factories

HOLLAND, Mich. — Four years ago, a low-slung factory on the fringes of town here was stagnating and shedding workers. Then Siemens, the German industrial giant, bought the plant and folded it into a global enterprise. Today, the factory is shipping wastewater treatment equipment to Asia and the Middle East and employing twice as many workers.

“Globalization has been good for Holland,” said David J. Spyker, now vice president of a Siemens unit with operations around the world.

About 60 miles to the northeast, a Swedish multinational shut down what had been the largest refrigerator factory in the country, a sprawling complex along the Flat River in Greenville.
The company, Electrolux, sent production to Mexico, eliminating 2,700 jobs from a town of 8,000 people.
As foreign buyers descend upon the United States, capturing widening swaths of the industrial landscape and putting millions of Americans to work for new owners, these two cities offer sharply competing narratives for a nation still uneasy about being on the selling end of the global economy.
More than 200,000 Michigan residents worked for subsidiaries of foreign companies as of 2005, according to government data.
Yet in a state that has lost 300,000 manufacturing jobs since 2000, foreign investment has not been enough to compensate; indeed, it has sometimes exacerbated the erosion.
Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm, a Democrat, was bitterly disappointed by Electrolux’s decision to abandon Greenville.
She had promised to persuade the company to stay, assembling a package of more than $120 million in state and local tax credits. The city offered to build a new plant. The local union agreed to give up as much as $33 million a year in wages.
“They said, ‘There is nothing you can do to compensate for the fact that we are able to pay $1.57 an hour in Mexico,’ ” Ms. Granholm recalled during a recent interview. “That’s when I started to say, ‘Nafta and Cafta have given us the shafta,’ ” she added, using the acronyms for the North American and Central American free trade agreements

Very interesting. Is that why Clinton and Obama want to get rid of or overhaul NAFTA?
There is also the other side that is not mentioned here.... American business people buy companies in Canada, and most certainly also in other countries.
Are they cry babies???

Hello Dancing_Loon!

No I don't think they're "cry-babies" its a combination of a sense of entitlement that gets conditioned into Americans from the time they start school until they take a dirt-nap and unrelenting greed. As prosperous as any American company could be...that isn't enough. The credo of American Capitalism is ...bigger is better and biggest is best....

An American can never have enough and feels unquestionably entitled to MORE.

Hi, Mikey;
have you read or heard about this book?

"A Short History Of American Capitalism" by Meyer Weinberg

http://www.newhistory.org/AmCap.pdf

Unfortunately, I can not copy and paste some of the pertinent paragraphs from the book which, by the way, is free for downloading. I've only glanced through the first few pages where he mentions the enormous land steal, the free and semi-free labour, and how the wealth was aligned to the rulers in government.

So I will not unduly be criticized for harping only on the Americans, I must acknowledge that we Canadians also, more or less, stole the land from the Indians. We, too, enriched ourselves by taking away from others through stealing, cheating and murdering.

You mention the word 'entitlement'. I had heard it recently from one of my daughters, too. We live in a culture of entitlement!

Business is not satisfied with making a decent living, no, it has to be making profits beyond reasonability, through ruthless exploitation of the working masses.
And yet, it is a vicious circle we can't get away from.

Layton, NDP thinking of court action to block Radarsat sale to U.S. firm

April 06, 2008

- NDP Leader Jack Layton says his party could go to court to try to block the Conservative government from approving the sale of a key corporate part of the aerospace industry to U.S. interests.
"What we're doing is surveying all of the arguments and instruments that are available," Layton said in an interview Sunday.
The main option being explored is whether it's possible to obtain a prohibition order from the courts that would prevent Ottawa - at least temporarily - from giving the go-ahead for the sale of the space technology division of Vancouver-based MacDonald, Detwiler and Associates.
The proposed deal has come under fire from labour, environmental and public policy groups, who say it would gut the Canadian aerospace industry, cost the country jobs and lead to a loss of control over technology developed with the aid of millions of taxpayer dollars.

I'm showing this as an example how the situation also works in reverse.

Are you a whine-box or what? I am American. I have enough. I do not feel entitled to more of anything. PLUS, I am very grateful for what I have and feel blessed to have been put on this continent. My husband got a good report on his cancer today.

You are overgeneralizing. Don't put all of us in one box. And greed? Yeah, that's why we keep everything to ourselves, like medical cures, entertainment, technology, resources, knowledge, etc.

Hey, what I want is a little respect from you. Here is yours: <Respect>. :-?

I know, we are harsh on you folks. I haven't been to the States for several decades, and have no real life idea how it is nowadays in your neck of the woods. My kids like to travel across the border, and find you ordinary people very nice and pleasant.
Personally, I don't like your present government, the Neo-Conservatives.... they are too aggressive, and yes, pretty greedy, too. We Canadians are not perfect, either... in fact, we are pretty similar. I better whisper, or else I'll get one on my hat!!!

I hope your husband is doing good. I'm not one of his buddies, don't even know him, except by name. Anyway, that's good news for you then.

Best wishes to you both!

Did they invent penicillin? Or morphine? Be thankful, Beaver, one of these days you might need their help!;-)

Is it over-generalizing to suggest that while 47 million Americans can't afford health care that those who do don't "see the problem..."? Is it over-generalizing to point out that American petroleum companies are recording multi-million dollar profits while the average American is swindled out of his/her home, your "bought-and-paid-for" government rescues the wealthy long before the problems of the greater majority are even paid lip-service? Perhaps it's over-generalizing when Americans would rather keep on paying their tax dollars to Haliburton and KBR and mercenaries in Iraq than they're willing to hold their government accountable for taking your nation to war on lies and utter fabrications? Is it completely foreign to you that the reason why "race" is once again being made an issue in Americas election process is because Americans would rather avoid the awkwardness of dealing with an entrenched bigotry? Is it such a surprise that your attention is focused on illegals coming across your borders while the wealthy and corporations find protection under your system of laws?

You just don't get it do you!?

You paid extravegantly for "cheap" Saudi Arabian oil and supported a barbaric regime for decades and now "wonder" how extremists and terrorists have the temerity to hold you accountable? You're surprised that it isn't anyone other than American corporations that are repeating this same mistake with China while Americans lose jobs to foreign countries because no American is willing to work for the same wages?

You people dug this hole your in and ....it looks good on ya!

No, over-generalizing is not the proper word. You have latched onto it so that you can use it as a preface for your usual tirades.

Is it over-generalizing to point out that American petroleum companies are recording multi-million dollar profits while the average American is swindled out of his/her home, your "bought-and-paid-for" government rescues the wealthy long before the problems of the greater majority are even paid lip-service?

Again, over-generalized is the wrong word. In this case, it is NONE OF YOUR D*MN*D BUSINESS. We will deal with it in our own way, and you do the same while using a smidge less criticism.

You have run off the road again and are driving in a ditch. Our best friend works for Halliburton. I elect not to discuss anything of this nature. How you got off on this subject is beyond me. Do you need us to chip in on a GPS unit for you?

Is it such a surprise that your attention is focused on illegals coming across your borders while the wealthy and corporations find protection under your system of laws?

Do you not see the contradiction in the above statement? In America, if something is illegal, it's illegal. We make our own laws, and you make yours. Given the next statement, I'd say it was YOU who failed to grasp the news, papers, magazines, - whatever your opinion is based on. Prax managed to get it , and not only get it, state it together in a very nice comprehensive way.

I tell you what, you work for those wages, don't mention it to me again. And we are trying to change the barbaric regime (still stuck in the 7th century). We have already won the war. There are several very important victories due to this war, and you can't even figure them out. Oh, Barb and Laura called for my potato salad recipe.

Uncle Percy - looking forward to my 3rd Anniversary on this BB

This BB has changed so much over 3 years. I am still fascinated with Canada, and I don't understand - to this day - why some people over here feel the need to hate America. I don't hate any country. Shrug?
