Four Senate Republicans signal opposition to Trump's plan to put Herman Cain on Federal Reserve Board, all but sinking nomination
Cain, a 2012 presidential candidate, has not been formally nominated. But Trump has publicly announced his intention to do so despite objections from Democrats and some Republicans who have questioned Cain's qualifications.
Republican Sens. Mitt Romney (Utah), Cory Gardner (Colo.), and Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) have said they would oppose the nomination. Sen. Kevin Cramer (N.D.) said Thursday, ��If I had to vote today, I would vote no.��
If all four join with Democrats, Cain would fall short of the votes needed for confirmation.

Trump picks Patrick Shanahan for defense secretary, White House says. The ex-Boeing executive has been acting head since January.
Shananan��s nomination had been held up by an inspector general's probe into whether he acted improperly in favor of Boeing, a major Pentagon contractor. He was recently cleared of wrongdoing.
If confirmed by the Senate, Shanahan would take over as the military is seeking to wind down insurgent wars and preparing for intensified competition with China and Russia.
