Fort McMurray is seeing a major population increase...it is currently around 60,000 but it is expected to reach 80,000 by 2010...this is an insane increase for a small town unseen anywere else in Canada..

..there is a huge urgency to upgrade the infastructure in the Ft McMurray region before 2008 when many of the megaprojects will be either under construction or up and running....and the demand for housing will be insane...also they are predicting a huge worker shortage, causing some companies to toy with the idea of flying workers to and from the Maritimes for free on thier private jets!!!! ...heck we should take all the welfare people who are able to work and send them up to McMurray and there would still be a shortage!!!

The lack of housing is a problem and people over charging for rooms or closets is rampent. Reminds me of Chetwynd back in 90's when they were building LP pulp mill. People in tents anywhere they could find, paying through the nose to share a place with 10 other guys. I knew people who were actually sleeping in closests. 8O Fort Mac aint that far off. Plus too cold in winter for me.

...lol haven't really seen it ...but I heard it ain't too plesant....but I still think that all the bums on welfare (who are not disabled and can work) should be shipped up there to work....maybe we could put a fence around McMurray and get jail inmates to work up there :D

...or again like Klein did, offer them a one way ticket to BC .....lol

It is screwed but due to lack of places for people to rent it is true.Bonko Defends Right of Fort McMurray Workers to Remain on Crown Land

“The minister has the power to allow the campers to remain on public land until the larger housing problem in Fort McMurray is resolved,” said Bonko. “The government has a responsibility to help people find places to live, not chase them away.”

“The minister needs to act now,” said Bonko. “Many of these oil sands workers are already giving up and leaving Fort McMurray.”

Good and Interesting article on FT. Mac

The oil companies should be building housing as part of the deal. Boomtowns like Fort Macmurray come and go. Right now there isn't enough housing. In a couple of decades there will be too much. Better the company foot the bill for that than the government.

Of course Ralphie is too crooked to have put a requirement like that in the contracts.

They ship in mobile classrooms for the University here if our buildings get too crowded and renovations are being done, we playfully refer to them as Cottage country. surely something along this line could be retrofitted as housing areas for the rig pigs in the area, and then carted away for disinfection when no longer needed

They could do something like that, Manda. The Alberta government traditionally requires nothing of the industry that profits from Alberta's natural resources though. The government then refuses to take responsibility for the Albertan people who are having their resources sold at bargain basement prices.

There is no responsibility in the modern version of conservatism.

They could, but property prices are so high that most can't afford it, even with the high wages. A lot of others have no intention of staying, they are just there for short-term cash, so they are not inclined to build houses. Still others have seen how boomtowns work and know that they will pay through the nose now and never be able to get their money back later.

My wife and I will probably donate the $$ to the local food Bank in Edmonton. I would have liked to have seen the building of a high speed rail system from Calgary-Edmonton-Fort Mcmurray. Using a Canadian built Bombardier train.

Whats the minimum wage in Alberta? Instead of sending a $400 check why not raise the minimum wage?
I think it's time for a national energy plan. If you are lucky enough to be a part of Canada you need to look out for Canadians first. If Alberta didn't have oil they'd be whining to Ottawa for money.

I think you forget who pays the minimum wage. The employer, not the government. The government sets and enforces it. What does a surplus have to do with minimum wage? Also, Alberta's largest industry is construction, not oil. Hasn't been oil for years. Please research before posting. And Albertans don't whine for anything but a voice when it comes to Ottawa, and we never get it. Perhaps you forgot back in the day when P.E.T. shared the Alberta pie with the east, and the west still has a bad taste in it's mouth over that. But of course, no one east of Saskatchewan would remember that, for some reason it does not count anymore...
