If the breeders hadn't been raising those dogs for the arenas for several generations,I doubt they'd be any problem. After all, Petey in The little Rascal comedies was a pitbull.

Except that they were bred to be dog aggressive not human aggressive. this logic only works if the pitbull attacks another dog.

No dog fighter is going to breed his dogs with any level of human aggressive tendencies. He'd never be able to handle his own dog......

The sensationalism of the media disgusts me.

In banning pitbulls or any other breed, you are not creating a solution to the problem. The media will attack rotties next, dobermans, then shepherds...any big, seemingly scary dog. Why? Because it makes a good story and it sells papers. People love to live in fear, otherwise life is boring.

I agree to a full extent that it is the dog owner's responsibility to curb any overly, aggressive behaviour. If you can't do this then perhaps dog ownership isn't for you.

With regards to the pitbulls themselves, it is likely that many of these so called "pitbull" attacks were not performed by pitbulls at all. I consider myself knowledgeable with regards to dog breeds, but I took this little quiz I found on the internet and failed.

http://www.pitbullsontheweb.com/petbull/findpit.html

I second improving regulations on ownership of certain breeds of dog. Does anyone know of any good sites with stats regarding the Winnipeg ban? I'd be interested in knowing if there is any information out there to prove that this has worked for them.

It has increased the number of rotties and those big Japanese fighting dogs (can't remember the name of the breed) being owned by yahoos. A lot of pitbulls are going unlicensed.

We had a pitbull attack on a woman here a few weeks ago...unlicensed dogs trained to be aggressive. They got out of the yard.

But are you sure it was a "pitbull".

You can't ban a breed when there really is no "breed". They are going to be forced to go for the "pitbull like' look which is going to cause heartbreak for every breed out there that may resemble...looks a wee bit like...has the same colouring....ears are the same...Same build....type of dog.

I thought they were banned in Winnipeg? or am I mistaken?

You aren't mistaken. Enforcing such a ban is almost impossible though.

But are you sure it was a "pitbull".

That's what they said on the news. The dogs were taken into custody and destroyed, I believe. Apparently the owner was some sort of gangster wannabe or something.

By the way, the mother that was involved with the case was charged with Child Endangerment today. At least some sort of justice was served, the stupid broad.

Good. Get rid of them all. Get rid of any and all dangerous animals within city limits. I knew this would happen as soon as they started allowing all the yahoo retards to have dogs in an apartment building or trailer park.
This is why we don't allow people to keep a tiger in the city, however well behaved it appears to the owner, or a crocodile in their backyard swimming pool.
D'uh
There is no reason I should have to take any risk to life and limb whatsoever just because my halfwit neighbour thinks owning a vicious dog makes him a hardrock.
Good riddance to those stupid mutts.

ummm...Steve? you're missing the fecking point. :x

It is the owners that are training the dogs to be vicious, or the ones that do not reprimand their dogs aggressive tendencies that create the problem. One of my dear friends had a boxer (another so-called vicious breed) who was my baby. I had taken care and played with her since she was a baby, so she wanted me to carry her every where, even when she was a 65 then 80 pound dog. When she nipped when she was a baby I would say "no" and then "cry". Even if you said ow when she stepped on your foot when she was older, she would sit down and give a paw and kisses until she knew you were allright. How is that a stupid mutt? when my friend moved to another community the dog ran away. the animal shelter found and housed her where all she did was cry. When my friend Ambre when to get her back, Roxy wouldn't go. They called me, when I got there and she ran out to me and whined until I picked her up and carried her out. I drove her to the new house and she never ran away again, perhaps because she knew I knew where they lived? Don't know about you, but I think some humans could stand to learn from her 8O

The reason you are risking life or limb is the owner, not the dog...stop taking human stupidity out on animals that can't speak human to voice their opinions

All dogs bite. Some dogs have huge jaws like a bear trap - they also bite.
Get rid of them, as they have no business within city limits.
The fact that some people are very cruel to their 'pet' is irrelevant.
Where I grew up in a small Northern town we simply shot stray dogs on sight. Now, unfortunately, I live in a big city where I am supposed to run and hide when encountering a vicious mutt snarling at me. I walk alot and ride bicycle - got sick and tired of being accosted by some stray animal, especially at night, so I had to start carrying a large hunting knife to gut em like a trout....no big deal since I used to work in a slaughterhouse, but still. You can't even buy bear spray around here cause it's a 'dangerous weapon'
.... ridiculous.
Ban them all.

I usually carry one myself just for that reason. The owners here still haven't realised they have to leash their mutts.

If you're ever in the situation where a pitbull attacks you, and you only have a knife, ram the blade straight through the eyeball [the brain is directly behind it]. Remember,it's your life you're defending. :)

Ya know, I've been attacked by German Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers, Toy Poodles and Chiahuahuas. I've never been attacked by a pitbull though, even though one that was alleged to be dangerous lived next door for several years.

I think if we're going to start banning things, we should start by banning people who are intolerant of dogs.

A St. Bernard was the largest dog to try to take a hunk out of my ass :) Dobermans and Rotts were the nastiest attackers. Most dogs just ignored me because I haven't any fear of them. But,just like certain people, some dogs just enjoy a good fight.

//If you're ever in the situation where a pitbull attacks you, and you only have a knife"

Fortunately it hasn't happened yet where I actually had to defend myself from being attacked, but I'm reasonably sure a dog will let go of my arm when his entrails are all over the sidewalk.

All dogs are also territorial which further complicates predicting behaviour in a big city filled with people crowding undefined 'territory'.

My neighbour had a rottweiler that crashed right through a screen door to attack some poor old guy walking by on the sidewalk with some groceries. Luckily he got rid of the dog before I did.

City folk tend to anthropomorphise their pets like part of the family or something, hence the absurd claims of doggy 'racism'.
Nothing against pets but I was not raised in a big city. To me, they're just animals, and I do not allow animals in the house and if an animal attacks me I kill it.
Simple as that.

Geez, Steve, you sound exactly like the sort of person I'd cross the street to avoid.

I like my dog more than I like most people. I'm one of those dog owners you are referring to. My girl is part of my family. Your callous words speak volumes about your character.

Breed banning does not work. Pit bulls are not the top of the bite list, so does that mean you think all dogs that bite should be banned? Why stop there? Maybe we should just round up the dangerous people and bring them to your slaughterhouse as well?

Ah, the futility of speaking with mental midgets. When will I learn?
