Are Climate Deniers and Front Groups Polluting Online Conversation With Denier-Bots?

There appears to be an increasingly sophisticated and planned effort by conservatives and polluter front groups to use “persona management” software to pollute social media outlets and website comment forums with auto-generated sockpuppet swarms designed to mislead and misrepresent real people.

Leaked emails from Aaron Barr, CEO of a federal subsidiary for HB Gary, disclose the latest efforts and technology used underhandedly for “ganging up on bloggers, commenters and otherwise ‘real’ people to smear enemies and distort the truth.”

This phenomenon was
first reported by Happy Rockefeller over at Daily Kos.

ClimateProgress is following this issue, particularly when it comes to the online discussion about climate change, noting that readers joke about pre-programmed ‘denier-bots’ and “how the same arguments and phrasings keep cropping up in the comments’ section of the many unmoderated news sites on the web.”

While proof that some of our democratic debate is artificial may come as a revelation for some, and be unsurprising for others, the implications are significant. It is increasingly difficult to know with any certainty whose comments are real, and it is undeniable that some readers are susceptible to bandwagon mentality when they see large amounts of comments and ‘support’ for particular interests. The
Koch Brothers with their many campaigns of disinformation are master manipulators of debate and are merely one, albeit a high-profile example, of human and media manipulation.
The following excerpts come from Happy Rockefeller’s discussion:

…HB Gary people are talking about creating “personas”, what we would call sockpuppets. This is not new. PR firms have been using fake “people” to promote products and other things for a while now, both online and even in bars and coffee houses.

But for a defense contractor with ties to the federal government, Hunton & Williams, DOD, NSA, and the CIA – whose enemies are labor unions, progressive organizations, journalists, and progressive bloggers – a persona apparently goes far beyond creating a mere sockpuppet.

According to an embedded MS Word document found in one of the HB Gary emails, it involves creating an army of sockpuppets, with sophisticated “persona management” software that allows a small team of only a few people to appear to be many, while keeping the personas from accidentally cross-contaminating each other. Then, to top it off, the team can actually automate some functions so one persona can appear to be an entire Brooks Brothers riot online.

Persona management entails not just the deconfliction of persona artifacts such as names, email addresses, landing pages, and associated content. It also requires providing the human actors technology that takes the decision process out of the loop when using a specific persona. For this purpose we custom developed either virtual machines or thumb drives for each persona. This allowed the human actor to open a virtual machine or thumb drive with an associated persona and have all the appropriate email accounts, associations, web pages, social media accounts, etc. pre-established and configured with visual cues to remind the actor which persona he/she is using so as not to accidentally cross-contaminate personas during use.

This is an excerpt from one of the Word Documents, which was sent as an attachment by Aaron Barr, CEO of HB Gary’s Federal subsidiary, to several of his colleagues to present to clients:

To build this capability we will create a set of personas on twitter,* ‬blogs,* ‬forums,* ‬buzz,* ‬and myspace under created names that fit the profile* (‬satellitejockey,* ‬hack3rman,* ‬etc*)‬.* ‬These accounts are maintained and updated automatically through RSS feeds,* ‬retweets,* ‬and linking together social media commenting between platforms.* ‬With a pool of these accounts to choose from,* ‬once you have a real name persona you create a Facebook and LinkedIn account using the given name,* ‬lock those accounts down and link these accounts to a selected* ‬#* ‬of previously created social media accounts,* ‬automatically pre-aging the real accounts.

In another Word document, one of the team spells out how automation can work so one person can be many personas:

Using the assigned social media accounts we can automate the posting of content that is relevant to the persona. In this case there are specific social media strategy website RSS feeds we can subscribe to and then repost content on twitter with the appropriate hashtags. In fact using hashtags and gaming some location based check-in services we can make it appear as if a persona was actually at a conference and introduce himself/herself to key individuals as part of the exercise, as one example. There are a variety of social media tricks we can use to add a level of realness to all fictitious personas.
There is no solution to this sort of third party and vested interest manipulation, but certainly making more people aware that this is a major issue is a great start to ensuring our conversation is real, and not overrun with denier bots.

Hmmmmm....R2Dbeave and C(aptian)3PO.

Getting a better idea on who is behind those hacked emails.....

YouTube - Anonymous on The Colbert Report

In this segment, Colbert puts a hilarious spin on how the outlaw hacker group Anonymous gave a pretentious corporate poser a deluxe cyber wedgie.
There’s a more sinister and menacing side to the back story, as this post from the Center for American Progress reveals:
Thursday, ThinkProgress published an exclusive report that the law firm representing the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, a right-wing trade association representing big business, is working with set of “private security” companies and lobbying firms to undermine their political opponents, including ThinkProgress. According to e-mails obtained by ThinkProgress, the Chamber hired the lobbying firm Hunton and Williams. Attorneys for the firm solicited a set of private security firms — HB Gary Federal, Palantir, and Berico Technologies (collectively called Team Themis) — to develop a sabotage campaign against progressive groups and labor unions, including ThinkProgress, the labor coalition Change to Win, SEIU, US Chamber Watch, and StopTheChamber.com.
New emails reveal that the private spy company investigated the families and children of the Chamber’s political opponents. The apparent spearhead of this project was Aaron Barr, an executive at HB Gary. Barr circulated numerous emails and documents detailing information about political opponents’ children, spouses, and personal lives.
One of the targets was Mike Gehrke, a former staffer with Change to Win. Among the information circulated about Gehrke was the specific “Jewish church” he attended and a link to pictures of his wife and two children (sensitive information was redacted by ThinkProgress):

Another target was Brad Friedman, co-founder of The Brad Blog. Barr’s profile of Freidman included information about his life partner and his home address (sensitive information redacted by ThinkProgress):

This tactic of targeting opponents’ personal lives and family was not simply a random event. Rather, it was a concerted and deliberate effort to use anything possible to smear the Chamber’s political opponents. To dramatize his firm’s intimidation tactics, Barr sent an email to Hunton & Williams attorney John Woods that contained personal details about fellow Hunton attorney Richard Wyatt, who was representing the Chamber. The email was intended to show Woods and Wyatt how “vulnerable” they are:

So that’s what we’re up against. That’s who they are, folks.
Don’t think they don’t take this seriously. They are dead serious, and in this to the end.

Thomas Friedman: “Mother of All Wake Up Calls” for Oil Addicted America in Arab Awakening

YouTube - CNN AC360 and NYTimes Thomas Friedman on Middle East Unrest 24 Feb 2011

Thomas Friedman writes today about what might be America’s final opportunity to wean itself off mideast oil:
No one is rooting harder for the democracy movements in the Arab world to succeed than I am. But even if things go well, this will be a long and rocky road. The smart thing for us to do right now is to impose a $1-a-gallon gasoline tax, to be phased in at 5 cents a month beginning in 2012, with all the money going to pay down the deficit. Legislating a higher energy price today that takes effect in the future, notes the Princeton economist Alan Blinder, would trigger a shift in buying and investment well before the tax kicks in. With one little gasoline tax we can make ourselves more economically and strategically secure, help sell more Chevy Volts and free ourselves to openly push for democratic values in the Middle East without worrying anymore that it will harm our oil interests. Yes, it will mean higher gas prices, but prices are going up anyway, folks. Let’s capture some it for ourselves.
It is about time. For the last 50 years, America has treated the Middle East as if it were just a collection of big gas stations: Saudi station, Iran station, Kuwait station, Bahrain station, Egypt station, Libya station, Iraq station,United Arab Emirates station, etc. Our message to the region has been very consistent: “Guys, here’s the deal. Keep your pumps open, your oil prices low, don’t bother the Israelis too much and, as far as we’re concerned, you can do whatever you want out back. You can deprive your people of whatever civil rights you like. You can engage in however much corruption you like. You can preach whatever intolerance from your mosques that you like. You can print whatever conspiracy theories about us in your newspapers that you like. You can keep your women as illiterate as you like. You can create whatever vast welfare-state economies, without any innovative capacity, that you like. You can under-educate your youth as much as you like. Just keep your pumps open, your oil prices low, don’t hassle the Jews too much — and you can do whatever you want out back.”

More cut and paste... How compelling

Riveting come back.

All quiet on the Western Front

It has been quiet on this blog lately simply because the alarmists are presently hibernating. Many alarmists, i.e. people who are paranoid that world communism/a world government/socialized health care are threatening North American rednecks’ all our individual wealth greed, and whose absolute human rights are threatened by compromises (through others claiming human rights, too), have left their senior citizen homes and migrated down south for the winter. Our blog writers used the time off to blow some CO2 by travelling to SE Asia and central America to check the effects of global warming climate change. For example, the lower limit of the cloud forest in central America is moving upwards, and if it is lifting above the central mountain ranges the moisture will not reach the land anymore as the clouds will rain off farther out, that is over the ocean. And so goes the rain forest, which eats plant food (CO2). But since global warming climate change is merely a hypothesis, we should not take action. We have presently so much plant food but not enough eaters...a classic natural food bank but no poor people, more so than a Calgary suburb.

The believers of the ‘Friends of Science’ nevertheless released a newsletter recently (believers are defined here as people who believe in absolute bull****, or who simply ‘believe’ without checking facts or spinning facts to fit their belief). Here an extract from their scientific newsletter:

What do we learn from this?

1. The ‘Friends of the Republicans Science’ endorse the Republican party.
2. They establish the old redneck connection between Texas and Alberta.
3. They hope for the EPA to stop regulating tobacco, the ozone hole, additives in adult diapers, the climate change hoax.
