Again, the argument "if you make this legal you might as well make female circumcision legal" doesn't make sense. I can understand why some people wouldn't want abortion legal. It's a tough decision that in a perfect world wouldn't have to be made. But I know desperate women will have it done, and they should have a safe way of doing it.

If that were the case then we should not make female circumcision illegal because it has been practiced for a very long time in certain parts of the world

Apples and oranges. These women have circumcision performed on them with out their consent. If they choose to have it done then there is nothing you or I can do about it. However, we both know that is not the case.

If it were a matter of having abortion performed on individuals who did not want it then I'd be all for making it illegal.

Gonzo, Twila,

If you read my post regarding female circumcision you will see that I use it to counter the arguement that since abortion has been taking place for a long time that we have to accept it as part of our culture. I'm making the point that the length of time a procedure has been performed has no bearing onto whether it is a valid procedure.

Twila, since young boys aren't consulted before their circumcision should that procedure also be illegal????

Thanks for repeating what I said in my post that the status of the child is the difference in the stance between the pro-abortion and pro-life sides.

So you admit that you are making an essentially religious argument about an issue of women's rights then?

Your point may have been to prove that traditions are by no means a reason to keep doing something, however your example for it, by comparison, was wrong. One can not use examples of things unrelated to the topic to prove a point successfully. It's apples and orange. They may both be round but that's about it.

if the reason's for boy and girl circumcision were the same ....then I'd be all for making it illegal for boys also....

Religion has nothing to do with it.

Please re-read my post:
Obviously, the biggest difference between the people who are pro-abortion and those who are pro-life is their belief with regard to the child.

Pro-lifers equate abortion with the killing of an innocent child whereas the pro-abortion side see the child as simply a mass of cells. The interesting part is that even most pro-abortionists will admit that at some point they believe the "mass of cells" does become a child within the womb, they simply don't know the exact time. I think we can all agree that it is crazy for Canada to have no law for the situation where someone stabs a mother who is carrying a baby that is full term and kills the unborn child and cannot be charged with anything with regard to the attack on the child.

Where in this post did I talk about the "soul" of the child. Many atheists believe that the mother carries a child within their womb and should have legal protection. If you read my post again, I argue that even most pro-abortionists will admit that at some time before the birth of the child they do recognize that the child is a human being. The two sides simply cannot agree on the point in which the "cells" become "human".

Again, please stop putting words in my mouth! :x

twila,

Male circumcision is performed for two reasons, one religious and one for "cleanliness". Everyone knows that Jewish males are circumcised on the 8th day as part of their religion. However, many non jews circumcise their babies because they believe it will prevent future problems with infections and disease as a result of unsanitary conditions.

However, female circumcision is strictly a religious procedure that many parts of the world practice. However, in our society, we few this as a barbaric and cruel procedure that is strictly for the pleasure of the male, which the families involved vehomently deny.

Do you believe the reasons are different? What reasons do you think the parents of these children have for performing the procedure???

Please show me how the reasons the family have for performing this procedures are different.
