Thanks for the article Tidbear.

It uses the words "cultural" and "religious" in the same line/sentence and not once mentions what the religious significance is. It mentions muslim and Jewish religions. But neither religion condone FGM. So, it sounds like a link was placed between religious and cultural customs by the writer, not by the facts.

No where does it state that it is NOT done for the reasons I stated.

RB,

At what point do you suggest we legally recognize the child??? At some point in the womb the child is viable, the discussion is when.

Twila,

I think the point is that these children are being circumcised by their parents because they believe it is a religious ceremony, similar to male circumcision.

Please don't get me wrong, I'm not in favour of this practice. The only reason I bring it up is that our culture allows for male circumcision, even without any religious significance and yet deny the same right to parents to have their girls circumcised for their own personal religious believes because we see it as brutal and destructive. Again we are forcing our religion onto these people.

Another example, which you will all get upset about is the blood transfusions and Jehovah Witness's. Without question, this is a religious believe and yet our laws specify that parents cannot refuse blood transfusions for their children. If there is ever an example of our society forcing their opinions onto others this is it.

Yes, I agree the parents are being a bit crazy, putting their child in a life threatening situation. However, I'm constantly hearing in this forum that we cannot impose our religious beliefs onto others and that is what we do.

Again, we either have the right to impose moral values on others or we don't. As MR Martin says, "We can't pick and choose!"

At what point do you suggest we legally recognize the child???

I suggest that we leave it up to the woman and her doctor. Late-term abortions are by no means common and are usually performed because of medical reasons.

Tidbear, I both agree and disagree with you.

For me at least, it is about choice. I dislike the idea of others making a choice for me based on their ideals.

Abortion is a tough subject for me (well not to tough) Simply because I'm 90% sure that if abortion was legal in those days, I would not be here. So I think one might see it from that point of view also.

I think that Louis Farrakhan has a similar story to tell. His mother tried 3 times to abort him. Maybe that why he soooo ugly :)
