A sad indication that our prisons aren't working too well.

A guy I know went to jail for 30 days to be served on weekend and he wasn't exactly jail material. When he was waiting for court to hand down sentencing he was in a cell waiting to go right to jail. In there another inmate said to him. "Are you holding?"
Meaning did he have any drugs.
He said, "No."
The inmate then said, "Guess you better get some money then."
Over the course of his time, he had his ribs busted, he broke a guys nose in self defense and lost his good behavior time and he found himself taking sleeping pills to make it through each weekend of incarceration.
Now my friend broke the law and he paid his dues, but the system is most definitely screwed up.
While incarcerated there was no availability to read, to watch television. Basically the short timers just sit and wait for the weekend to end. While many might think that this is alright for criminals, it does leave people with nothing to do but do drugs and fight. If we are going to incarcerate people, we need to employ them in some manner that stimulates their mind and detracts from violent behavior.
For those of you that think. "Mehhh, let them kill each other."
I counter with, not all criminals in the system are beyond salvage. Some have made grave errors and actually do become contributing members of society. In my friends case, he runs a company that employs about 25 people.

What makes them be bad and do bad things? Their feet or their brains?
Because a person doesn't choose to use their brain power doesn't mean it's not there.

Retraining is great stuff - if you can get it immediately - because the bank won't wait for its mortgage payment and it's a bit ridiculous to accept less than you owe to sell it.

Food banks have limits too - and they're getting lowered every day people are losing their jobs or coming up against the inflation racket.
Food banks do have some limits and in some cases not enough. Some people that are well off have the nerve to go to food banks and play poor folks using up food for the truly hungry. The reason I think food banks should have limits is in the way they just hand over food. I think there should be some way of knowing if people really need it.
I realize banks don't wait but, I have known a number of people who go to school at night and still keep their low paying day job. I'm not suggesting it's easy. There are people who work several jobs at once and still go to school. Not everyone has the stamina or the will power. I don't know how well I would do put into the same situation. I just know I would not rob a store even to feed my family. I might raid a little from someone's garden but I would only take what I needed. There would be no threat to anyone in the process.

My post said otherwise with the exception of the likes of Pickton and Bernardo.
Truthfully, JLM, I thought that was what you were meaning to say but it didn't sound like that even though I gave it more than one reading. Knowing you as long as I have, I didn't expect you to say that there should only be one person to a cell. I guess it's one of those times a person has to "hear" the words rather than read them.

It's bad feet then and not a mental issue to be bad?
Nope. Obviously the feet are working just fine. Legs too because they run like the wind once they have committed the crime. A bad person, can be rehabilitated and some people with mental deficienties can be. A bad person has to recognize they are being bad and then want to become a better person. A little like AA. A person with a mental dis-order, probably will never learne they are bad and may never understand that they are committing a criminal act. Re-hab doesn't even work for lots and lots of drug addicts. My best friends son has been in re-hab over and over. He went two years clean. A couple of months ago, his Mom said she could see the signs. She knew he was going to use. He did. He was slated for 6 months in jail. (he goes door to door asking for money and he's so polite and a very clean cut guy that people give it to him) He was very lucky in that, the place where he's had his re-hab before, like him and feel he's worth taking in so the court said okay to him just going to re-hab instead. If he screws up though - he will be in the cells.
