A Question for You

We are told that we have a surplus and that everything is under control; but we all see what's happening all around the world..

Some politicians see a vision of a "Big Canada", swaying influence around the world

But what influence and for what purpose??

Some politicians see a vision of a "Small Canada", always somehow being someone's younger brother (or sister)

But what do the People think?? Do they actually have a vision of their country that meets the challenges of future generations???

I personally think its about time we started to work on one....

What about a five year plan (or there abouts), a Royal Commission on "A Vision for Canada",how we make a living, how we treat our neighbours, how we live, etc..., where everyone has their say...

Our reference point for the Vision would be the answer to the prayer we so often say:

"God, keep our land glorious and free"...

The process would provide us with deep understandings about our country..

What do you think???

First we would need to define exactly where we are. Maybe we should start here in this thread...

Who are we?

I'm constantly amazed at how truly myopic folk can be. While Canadians pay 20% more for goods than an American pays when the Canadian dollar is at par or worth more than the American dollar, why isn't there much more conversation about how badly Canadians are being screwed by "business"? Apparently some here think/believe/feel...that what national banner is flying over your highschool represents something other than geography! The world is being and has been "run" by the wealthy forever.

Americans..FEMA rushes to California to fight fires but thousands of black Americans in New Orleans who don't own multi-million dollar "homes" can strarve to death and American politicians send billions to Israel...

Canadians can't find adequate health care and Stephen Harper is spending billions in Afghanistan....

All this nonsense about "democracy" and the importance of "voting" and all the social structures of Canada and the United States....there not about "democracy" or "freedom" they're about keeping the balance of power over the lives of others firmly in the grasp of the wealthy!

Are you people just plain stupid?

Not me....Just pragmatic...

I don't like the way lots of things are but I also don't understand fully how things got they way they are and I for one would like to know...And then once I know, bloody well do something about it...

The wealthy should have their say too....We're all Canadians....

You guys don't know???

The Faithful and True.....Or at least what the country has created in its best....

But there's no free lunch where we're headed....
lol okay yeah we are the faithful and the true... but we have huge problems right where we are... We have to define the values we currently hold as a nation. What works, what doesn't and how do we fix it. What are our priorities and what should be our priorities?

For instance as Mikey says in a post further down... Should we be in Afganistan, should we be paying down our debt, what fires need putting out and how do we do that?

I feel the same way....That's why I made this suggestion...We've got lots of things to do to make Canada the nation that we be as proud of......to the same degree we all love her...

I'd be very cautious about setting a bunch of politicians on an errand like this. I suspect that given a task like this, many grandiose and wide-ranging speeches would be made, many politicians would make their fame last for ever with fantastic documents spelling out the future in beautiful colours.

And then everyone would go ahead and do exactly what they always did.

Absolutely...

That's why it should be a Royal Commission that goes long enough and is broad enough for everyone to have their say....

Afraid when you see things from my perspective, the wealthy have ALL the say simply because they pull all the strings and they are the ones in positions of power.

I hear ya.....

That's part of the reason for me starting this thread...

I was just around town a few minutes ago and heard two truck drivers talking about the harmonization thingy that the 3 amigos are dreaming up and it was clear that the government has either lost the people's trust or it is so mismanaged that it couldn't fight its way out of a paper bag...Either way..

Royal Commission!!!! Its our right in this country to call for one.....
