No. I'm a humming being. I understand fully.

Sorry Cliffy, but that logic simply doesn't work.... Unless of course you are suggesting that those that take offense to an adjective are not humming beings

And if your name is "Jack" you can sue you can sue that famous brand name for double......;-)

Maybe even more now that I think of it.

The 'Jack in the Box' franchise is clearly promoting confinement (and possibly violence) against all those that carry the handle 'Jack'

No, just those who don't understand that the offense was deliberate in the first place. Also people who take offense where none was intended, like the councilwoman in the other thread.

Or a Jack that is used to raise a car would be saying someone is a tool.

Thousand of aboriginal people have spoken out about this for decades. Looks to me that at least one person in congress finally listened. Not surprising it wasn't a republican.
Do you know the history of the Democrat party?

All heinous degradation.

Are those references to groups of people, the way "redskins" is?

Actually, this is real simple. A large number of Indians has made it abundantly clear that they find the name offensive and would like it changed, even to the point of spending money on it. (By the way, captain morgan, I really don't give a damn one way or the other.)

And a large group of Washington fans, and an even larger group of people who have no discernable interest are cranking up the machinery to keep the clearly racist name.

Only one conclusion is possible. The pro-Redskins group must be proud of the genocide and racism that is an integral part of America, and want to preserve it.

Good luck on that then.

Can't wait for this to spill over into the abolishment of adjectives like black, yellow and white.

Well, go try to start up the Montreal Whiteskins and see how it goes. lol.

I wonder when crackers are going to sue to have the name of those crunchy little snacks changed to something like crunchers or snappers. Mustn't leave out the republicans now, must we?

We have a fish species out here that has been called a squaw fish for ever. Of course it is now not PC to call it that, but I can't for the life of me remember what the new name is.

I grew up farming rape. It's funny how language shifts.

Wouldn't be the same. To the best of my knowledge, the Candian and predecessor British and French government never offered a bounty for the scalps of whites.

And if they hadn't, if there'd been no attempted genocide, suddenly the name would be okay? I doubt it. While I get why you think this makes good leverage for your point, something about it comes off really wrong.

Sorry about that, but I'm pretty good with the notion that all racism is wrong, but that racism that comes with a history of legal, mandatory genocide, slavery, segregation, and oppression is more wrong.

We aboriginals sued to have trademark protection of the name removed, and we're doing it again.

lmao... right. Me too

Are you talking about the Iroquois nation?

Funny how the Native Americans let the PC crowd tramp all over them but go after something silly as a team name.

Maybe I'll go after Notre Dame for the Fighting Irish...

No stereotype there eh?

I think that starting up a chapter of the White Panthers should be higher up on my bucket list before a football team

that already exists, it's called the KKK.

I think to fairly compare the Redskins to the Fighting Irish, you'd need to compare how many natives were involved in the Redskins naming, with how many Irish were involved in the naming of the fighting irish.

I remember this subject coming up many years ago concerning teams with the 'american indian' connected

to their names, don't think anything came of it, correct me if i'm wrong.

atlanta braves

cleveland indians

who knows, maybe the first nations are proud to be called 'red skins'.

as a white skinned irish/english woman, I wouldn't have a clue how they feel,
I only know from my vantage point, 'redskins' sounds brave and strong.

'white skins' would sound feeble and weak.

I'd have to disagree. Giving one group more importance and consideration over others in policy making is wrong. And what this discussion is about, is the policy that pertains to the name of this sports team. Your 'race' shouldn't have more sway with the government than any other in this regard, no matter what the genocidal history was.

But honestly, I don't think they'd put up with 'whiteskins' teams either.

There was a point there, and you missed it.

Ah, the contempt for "PC."

Y'know, it's kind of like this. Let's say you work with a guy named Michael. One day you call him "Mike," and he lets you know that he prefers to be Michael. I think we could all agree that only a pathetically belligerent and not-too-bright person would refuse to accede to this perfectly reasonable request. Yet for some reason when a group of people asks society to stop using terms that are offensive, and usually were designed to be deliberately offensive, many members of society get all ruffled.

Go figure.

TYhe problem arises when he wants to be called Doug on Tuesday, Fred on Friday, and then Boxlodean Wildermaacht XIV on Monday.

Well, this white-eyes of Irish heritage, who doesn't get all uptight if he's called a "mick", thinks it's just more PCness gone rampant. And wifey, who is half Irish and half Anishinaabe (AKA Ojibwe AKA Chippewa) also thinks it's silly.

BTW, the NZ Allblacks were called that because they wore mostly black. lol
