my husband and I often have our lunch 'upstairs' in quality foods, (large grocery store), and we
can sit at our table and look out over the whole store, and we have often remarked, as
we watch the crowds moving about, that -"Imagine if you were to bring someone into this
store straight from a starving country, their eyes would not believe what they see", and
we should remember that sight, and not take it for granted.

I believe(but can't remember exactly since it was so long ago;-)) that my parents said that there were starving children in Africa that would love to eat the things I did not want to eat. Darned turnips. I was guilted into eating you.

I remember coming on a visit to the States with my mother when I was a kid. It was in 1991, and it was the hardest economic period in Russia as far as I can remember. We came in January, and after our friends met us at the airport, we went to a restaurant to have a meal. I still remember the things I had - watermelon, grapes and bananas. It was so strange to have all these fruit in the middle of the winter, while we only had watermelon and grapes in summer, and bananas was something very hard to get in Russia at that time.

However, when I was small my mother used to tell me about hungry children in Africa. Isn't it curious how parents use the same ruses in different cultures all over the world?

Nug : Your mum is a saint

Thanks Lester. She was a pretty good lady. Gone now. RIP.

When SHE was a girl her dad (me grampa) used to have to sometimes barter his trade for food (live pigs and chickens, etc.), lumber, whatever. His customers, mostly working people, just did not have much money.

Stuck with her I guess.
