A Detention Bill You Ought to Read More Carefully - Politics - The Atlantic
Why is the national security community treating the "Enemy Belligerent, Interrogation, Detention, and Prosecution Act of 2010," introduced by Sens. John McCain and Joseph Lieberman on Thursday as a standard proposal, as a simple response to the administration's choices in the aftermath of the Christmas Day bombing attempt? A close reading of the bill suggests it would allow the U.S. military to detain U.S. citizens without trial indefinitely in the U.S. based on suspected activity.

Laws are becoming more bizarre all the time. In Ontario, if you are charged with (note: not convicted of) driving more than 50km/h over the limit, your car will be seized for a week.

In Washington State, a proposed new law will allow police to seize your vehicle if you are SUSPECTED of driving under the influence.

We seem to have moved a long way from the quaint notion of 'innocent until proven guilty'.

Drunk Driving laws have always walked close to that edge of guilty before innocence. The only way to prove it is through a blood test or breathalyzer and you have the right to refuse those tests. It makes it harder to convict without self incriminating yourself so they make it just as painful NOT to provide evidence against yourself.

They have that out west too, after a certain speed it is considered racing on a public road. In the old days it was a volentary $75 fine if you were the only vehicle going that fast, racing still got the car impounded. In the small town I grew up in we had some 12 sec cars and no drag-strip. Guess where they got 'tested'?

I thought refusing to blow carried the same penalty in Court. I'm not sure if that would help with the rise in insurance premiums.

Hmmmmmmmm.

I'd sure be in **** with them, but to each his own.

A good way to shut someone up, I suppose.

That would deal with Lucifer and Christ,

But my real strength does not lie there.

I'm from the beginning.

How bout a sit down over a beer or a Whiskey?

With me, you'd get the same result.
