Meat like any other protein requires you to drink ****loads of water to properly digest.

There are no hormones and there are no antibiotics in milk or meat. If either are found in the blood work of an animal before slaughter it's rejected and back to the feedlot it goes.
Seriously? I always thought there were...hm, live and learn... thanks...

Okay so help me out here....aren't cows shot up with stuff to increase their growth, or fed stuff that is questionable...

Most Canadians base their food fears off of American food issues.

Canadian food laws are different

Nope. The only antibiotics they get is when bottle fed as calfs to replace the anitbodies in the cows milk. Zero hormones.

I just remember reading stuff long ago and haven't researched it much other than when Temple Grandin popped up...brilliant woman that she is... and I think your statement is quite valid for me for sure.

thanks Petros... I am going to look at this again because I love my beef. I eat mostly chicken but really could take it or leave it and would be happy to get most if not all of my protein via plant source for all the joy it gives me to eat it.

If you're going to drop meat, you have to replace the proteins. Fried buckwheat and onions is my fave.

Cattle producers pay some heavy vet fees and follow strict guidelines to ensure their product is top notch before it goes to market.

Without meaning to pick on or single you out, go re-read what you wrote about food first in this thread. It had the air of authority. "our food is full of hormones". That's how effective the fear campaigns put out by organic food producers and PETA and similar organizations have been. We just swallow it as fact, without even knowing the reality of it.

I use veggie ground round where possible... it tastes nice and gives the illusion of ground beef... buckwheat huh...I am going to look that up too...never heard of it...except for an old character in a a cartoon. ;)

My guy marathons and I have always been into healthy eating but now that he marathons we are more into the science of diet than we ever used to be. The thing is information changes so rapidly...drink coffee, don't drink coffee... use caffeinated, don't use caffeinated. Now they know it helps with the brain...

I think the foremost thing to remember is be open, do your research, listen to your body and be moderate.

And we research our stuff constantly...just haven't with beef other than the release of chemicals into the body upon slaughter for a long time now... So much is opinion even with experts.. put three in a room, they will give your three opinions. Which is why I like reading about different ways of viewing things... right can vary...greatly.

Fear is a wonderful tool of manipulation.

Like that article Cliffy posted. It opened with a flat out lie from an animal rights activist.

Buckwheat replaces rice in any dish that would normally be rice in my house. It's tastier and healthier.

Dietitians of Canada acknowledges the financial support of EatRight Ontario by the Ontario government. The views expressed do not necessarily reflect those of the Province.

In otherwords, we might be bullsh*tting and going against what Govt says.
and they might not... and the damage done does not show up for years....it does come down to an opinion, various opinions actually.

Ultimately we have to make the choice as to what we choose to believe after open-mindedly weighing both sides. I would trust the dietitians of Canada over our government.. Maybe it's just because they agree with my opinion based on conclusions drawn via research done years ago.

I am willing to be open minded, but at this point... to me.. they have hormones in them, and that could be dangerous. Thus reduce my intake (as we have). I'm cool with those who believe this is fear mongering or based on faulty opinions from south of our border though. I'm back to square one... I was burger hopeful for a short time.

Correct according to this article.

It's pulled directly from the article.

I've read contradictory articles in the past though, that say the cattle industry allows for therapeutic use of growth hormone, but the slaughter of said cattle is delayed until hormones are virtually non-existent in the meat. Same with anti-biotic use. Animals on anti-biotics are not allowed to go to slaughter until clean.

yes absolutely, it can be confusing to say the least...multiple experts, multiple articles, multiple opinions and then we get into agendas... not always the same as ours...lol

follow the money trail, but that can be hard to do

no kidding huh, we were just discussing that the other day... you can't just pick up soy anymore...it's got all kind of alterations done to it as well... I spend half my time in the grocery store reading labels...GMF...just lovely

oh well, something is going to kill us eventually, choose our poison wisely I guess... I like those altered crushed grapes myself... I hear they can do liver damage though

I learned something in this exchange too. I had similar perceptions as Sal.

Although growth hormones and antibiotics are considered safe for food production in Canada, consider the following tips to reduce your exposure to these additives:
-Organic foods have fewer traces of antibiotics than non-organic foods.
-Since beef cattle are the only animals that contains growth hormones, consider choosing organic beef instead of conventional beef when you can.
-Dairy cattle do not receive growth hormones so you do not need to limit conventional milk or milk products.
-Thoroughly wash all vegetables and fruit for thirty seconds under running tap water to minimize the intake of antibiotics.
