No, he won't get better in prison, but this kid's first story was that he only shot them once to put them out of their misery after they were shot by an unknown assailant. I don't put much stock in the story of a thousand smacks. He sounds to me like a budding little psychopath.
It doesn't matter what he sounds like via a news feed. The courts can/should/better be able to figure out what he needs in terms of a sentence. Be it a slap on the wrist and some heavy counseling, or an adolescence of criminal training and soul twisting in prison before being released back into society. Personally, at the age he's at, I think the best bet for a half decent human being upon release (because let's face it, he's eight, release IS inevitable), is with a rehabilitation tactic, not a punishment one.
I would say this kid has received too many little slaps on the wrist and not enough intelligent discipline. That he thought it was okay to shoot two people dead, including his dad tells us loads about him. Remember he shot both the victims twice with a single shot rifle. Probably yet another kid being raised by the television. After he is released, the probability is that we will likely hear about him again.
I feel sorry for this little kid. His parents needed killing by the sounds of it. Too bad he doesn't live in a civilized country that doesn't incarcerate children.
