He's 8 years old for christ's sake, I think it's bit premature to lock him up for life.
Maybe- I think the amount of juvenile delinquency to day compared to 50 years ago is proportionately equal to the number of wood sheds.

It doesn't matter what he sounds like via a news feed. The courts can/should/better be able to figure out what he needs in terms of a sentence. Be it a slap on the wrist and some heavy counseling, or an adolescence of criminal training and soul twisting in prison before being released back into society. Personally, at the age he's at, I think the best bet for a half decent human being upon release (because let's face it, he's eight, release IS inevitable), is with a rehabilitation tactic, not a punishment one.
