January 2, 2026: BISONS SHUT OUT IN DULUTH

MANITOBA BISONS 0
MINNESOTA-DULUTH BULLDOGS 4

Links:
➤ Summary: Scoring Summary : Sidearm Stats
➤ UMD: No. 5 Bulldogs Open New Year with 4-0 Win Over Manitoba

Quick Summary
Man: none
UMD: H. Anderson (8:26 2nd), J. Shaugabay (19:48 2nd), R. Zaremba (9:53 3rd), C. Arnott (11:39 3rd)
Goal: Man: C. Plowman L (20 shots, 19 saves), M. Kieper (19 shots, 16 saves); UMD: E. Dahlmeier (6 shots, 6 saves), C. Sheffield (7 shots, 7 saves)

The Bisons started 2026 being shutout, by the #5 team in the NCAA (#3 in the NCHC). After Holt went the distance down in Omaha, the backup goaltenders (Plowman and Kieper) split this one.

This was an interesting Friday night with a selection of inter-conference games, so I included all of them.

OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD

BRIERCREST COLLEGE CLIPPPERS 3
REGINA COUGARS 6

Nothing about this one but an Instagram scoreboard picture. Briercrest’s new website looks flashy but they have yet to add any content. Regina does not post game stories any more.

SIJHL ALL-STARS 3
LAKEHEAD THUNDERWOLVES 5

Links:
➤ LU: Lakehead picks up 5-3 win over SIJHL Allstars (with summary)

I like the idea of USports teams facing Junior A All-Star squads. It is good local outreach, generates some publicity, and provides exposure for the players and the university. And this is the perfect weekend for it. Shots were 39-21 in favour of the Thundermutts. The teams play again on Saturday night. The uploaded photo looks like the SIJHL squad wore their dark club jerseys, like MLB used to do!

SJHL ALL-STARS 3
S.A.I.T. TROJANS 2
(in overtime)

The SJHL All-Stars probably enjoyed the trip to Camrose for the Viking Cup, but maybe they can face either the Banjo-Cats or Banjo-Mutts next year instead of, or in addition to, this tournament. Under the IIHF 3-2-1-0 point system, the SJHLers finish with 11 points, and SAIT gets 2nd place with 7 points, and a berth in Saturday’s final. The host UA-Augustana and Czechia University Selects both finish with 6 points and will play for bronze. Midland finished with a bagel.

SIMON FRASER RED LEAFS 0
MASSACHUSETTS MINUTEMEN 7

Links:
➤ MU: Massachusetts Hockey Blanks Simon Fraser, 7-0, In Exhibition Matchup (with summary)

The Clown’s Globetrotters Team are now 4-8-2. They haven’t made progress in finding opponents. They played four games in September during the CW pre-season. Then they had 7 games in October, one game in November, and two in December to wrap up 2025. In 2026 this was their first of four games in January, followed by two in February, and one in March. Their wins include a season-opening shoot-out over UBC (part of a split), Vancouver Island, Alaska-Anchorage, and Maryville of the ACHA in a shoot-out (and part of a split). Twenty-one games, including pre-season and with no possible playoffs, is a pretty sparse schedule.

January 3, 2026: OUT OF TOWN BLEND OF CONFERENCE AND NON-CONFERENCE ACTION

The Bisons’ holiday interregnum ended Friday night, but elsewhere we saw a blend on conference and non-conference play. Things are almost back to normal!

OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD

CW Non-Conference Games

N.A.I.T. OOKS 5

There is no story or boxscore of this game anywhere I can find. MacEwan is generally pretty good with their website, but not today. These two were formerly ACAC rivals, before MacEwan switched to the CW. This game would have therefore had some bragging rights attached, since both schools are located in Edmontown. NAIT is tied with UA-Augustana for 6th in the 7-team ACAC. This is unfamiliar territory for them.

CALGARY DINOSAURS 4
ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS 3

Links:
➤ UofA: Boxscore

There was no game story, but the Evil Monkeys posted the boxscore. Bedrock U scored with 20 seconds left to pick up the win. The game also drew over 1,000 fans, showing me that people are looking for an excuse to get out of the house and return to old ways in the new year. The shots were remarkably low, 26-15 in favour of the Monkeys.

The Chinese National Team has a tour of the ACAC coming up, with 8 games against 5 teams. I searched for some back ground on this, without success. Their junior teams is currently playing in one of the IIHF tiers, against the likes of Great Britain. So I am guessing this is either a university team or their senior team.

I am posting an early preview this week because the Bisons have an early upload, along with four other CW teams.

When these teams last met, it was in Saskatown on the Halloween and World Series Weekend. On the Friday night, the Banjo-Mutts were high on moonshine and built a 5-0 lead after two periods. Then a hangover set it. The Herd stampeded back to make it 5-3 before an empty-netter put it away.

However, on Saturday the roles were reversed. The Bisons took a 4-1 lead into the 3rd period. The Banjo-Mutts rallied after a trip to the fire hydrant and a rousing Kazoo Chorus from the Saskatown Symphony Orchestra. It ended 4-3 for the Bisons.

The sweep of the Bisons by the Bluegars before Christmas may have dashed the Bison hopes of catching them. Now the Bisons have to cross their fingers and look covetously at that 10-point gap between them and the Mutts. Although the Mutts are 3rd in the East Division, they are ranked 4th in the nation in the OHT35, and 7th in the USports poll. Could the Bisons catch them? After this weekend, each side has ten games remaining, thusly:

Jan 16-17: Manitoba at TWU & Sask at MRU
Jan 23-24: Manitoba at MacEwan & Alberta at Sask
Jan 30-31: Alberta at Manitoba & Regina/Sask home & home
Feb 6-7: Regina at Manitoba & Calgary at Sask
Feb 13-14: Manitoba at Calgary & Sask at MRU

They have six common opponents. Then the Bisons have two games against each of Trinity and MacEwan, whilst Sask has two series at Mount Royal.

Any way you slice it, the Bisons need a sweep this weekend for a miracle finish.

REGINA COUGARS (2-14-0, 4-16-2, OHT35 #33)

Links:
➤ UofC: Team Website
➤ UofR: Goaltender Dylan Ernst commits to Cougars

The Big News out of Banjoland is that the Cats have a new kitten in goal. Dylan Ernst has left the Kamloops Blazers to live in Regina to see if he could lift them out of the basement. The Bedrock Boys have been a pleasant surprise so far this year.I’d be shocked if they picked up less than four points here.

TRINITY WESTERN SPARTANS (3-14-1, 7-16-1, OHT35 #32)
MACEWAN GRIFFINS (7-8-3, 10-12-3, OHT35 #17)

Links:
➤ MacU: Team Website
➤ TWU: Spartan Male Athlete of the Week I Connor Farren

This could be Holy Trinity’s last gasp at making a playoff run. They trail the Family Guys by 10 points, but after this weekend both sides will have just eight games left. The Spartans usually have one close game per weekend. I wouldn’t expect anything better here, but even with a sweep their odds are slim and none.

MOUNT ROYAL COUGARS (11-5-2, 15-7-2, OHT35 #10)
U.B.C. THUNDERBIRDS (15-1-2, 19-2-3, OHT35 #2)

Links:
➤ MRU: Vaughn Watterodt: Prairie tough beyond the ice
➤ UBC: Conner McDonald, Jamie Lundmark putting their stamp on T-Birds in new assistant coaching roles
➤ CW: Games of the Week on Telus and CBC

This should be the best series of the weekend to watch. The Friday game is also on CBC’s YouTube channel in addition to the usual streaming on CWTV. Each weekend for the remainder of the regular season will include a Game-of-the-Week in each of men’s and women’s hockey, basketball, and football. The Bisons still have a faint hope of catching the Bluegars. MRU has 24 points to the Herd’s 13, but have just eight games left on their schedule. The T-irds improved throughout the 1st semester, so they are the one team nobody wants to play right now.

January 8 2026: SUPPLEMENTARY PREVIEW

When I posted the preview post, five of eight teams had new stories. Since then seven have added stories, four of those being second stories. Here we go .....

SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES (11-4-1, 17-6-3, OHT35 #4)
MANITOBA BISONS (6-9-1, 11-16-1, OHT35 #21)

Links:
➤ GoBisons: Teamwork makes the dream work for Bisons forwards Zaplitny, Bruce
➤ UofS: Huskie Men's Hockey Signs Former AHL & ECHL Goaltender Nolan Maier
➤ Elite Prospects: Ty Prefontaine
➤ Elite Prospects: Nolan Maier

The second story at GoBisons.ca is about forwards Caden Zaplitny and Skyler Bruce and their jobs acting as respite workers for two disabled persons. An interesting away-from-the-rink kind of story.

Meanwhile, there is both a second semester addition and a deletion from the Banjo-Mutts.

Departing is Ty Prefontaine, a defenceman who wore an “A”. This was his 6th season on the roster - the Covid season with no GPs, four full seasons, and this half. It is highly likely that his schooling was done. He’s off to the Allen Americans of the ECHL.

Arriving is goaltender Nolan Meier from the Idaho Steelheads of the ECHL. He has played 3 ½ seasons of pro, and started with the Saskatoon Blades in 2017-18. He can’t have much eligibility left. Goaltending was not really a problem for the Mutts in the first half of the season. But Meier’s numbers are good:
WHL: 122-17-18, 2.89 GAA, .905 S%
AHL: 6-3-2, 2.88 GAA, .886 S%
ECHL: 41-40-8, 3.05 GAA, .897 S%

January 9, 2026: BISONS FAIL TO HOLD THE LEAD IN OTL

SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES 3
MANITOBA BISONS 2
(in overtime)

➤ Summary: Game Centre : Game Report
➤ UofS: Huskies Third Period Comeback Snatches the Win, Besting the Bisons 3-2 in OT (with boxscore)
➤ UofM: Huskies score three unanswered to beat Manitoba in OT, 3-2

Quick Summary
Sask: L. Kosior (00:59 3rd) , C. Bertholet (16:43 3rd) , L. Keeler (01:53 1st OT)
Man: L. Brennan (12:54 1st) , C. Behun (01:01 2nd)
Goal: Sask: Thomson (23 shots, 21 saves), Man: Holt (25 shots, 22 saves)

Despite a really good performance, the slim odds of the Bisons snatching a playoff berth went to theoretical only.

Here’s how they lined up:

MANITOBA
Goal:
31 Holt (34 Plowman)

Defence:
13 Brenton - 8 Toth
4 Bonni - 3 Borschawa
22 Willick - 6 Coyle

Forwards:
21 Pasternak - 18 Hooker - 24 Brennan
29 King - 14 Swetlikoff - 17 Bruce

23 Lane - 20 Zaplitny - 28 Behun
9 Alarie - 19 Arpin - 26 Boucher

Scratches:
G: 30 Kieper
D: 5 Bielik - 27 Turner
F: 10 Bouvier - 11 Purdom - 12 Trimble - 16 Joss - 25 Dekay

SASKATCHEWAN
Goal:
32 Thomson (31 Maier)

Defence:
2 Jordan - 7 Bairos
4 Saunderson - 6 Rhinehart
28 Kinniburgh - 3 Kosior

Forwards:
11 Petruic - 27 Pelletier - 18 Bertholet
14 Roulette - 19 Pillar - 16 Holt
15 Stebbings - 10 Keeler - 23 Tkachuk
20 Sorenson - 17 Hayes - 21 Ferster

Scratches:
G: 30 Kooy
D: 12 Johnston - 26 Prosofsky
F: 5 Ong - 8 Somers - 13 Regnier - 29 Penner

I cannot say that the Bisons “blew a lead” particularly. The game was closely contested throughout. The overtime goal was somewhat controversial, coming on a powerplay and apparently bouncing off a chest in a battle in the crease.

Calg: M. Stewart (06:06 1st) , M. Stewart (15:47 1st) , D. Fry (05:02 3rd)
Reg: E. Houk (02:21 3rd) , J. Doucet (18:14 3rd)
Goal: Calg: Stankowski (22 shots, 20 saves), Reg: Cunningham (24 shots, 21 saves)

The Banjo-Cats are hopefully going to avoid being an easy out in the 2nd semester. Their close losses, at one time, occurred when they were severely outshot. I expected them to be a much tougher team this season. In the meantime, Bedrock U continues to roll.

➤ TWU: Spartans Fall to Griffins (with boxscore)
➤ MacU: Chabot breaks goals record as Griffins show off depth with seven different scorers in big win over Spartans (with boxscore and video)

Quick Summary
TWU: R. Landmanis (08:55 1st) , C. Lowe (07:30 2nd) , C. Lowe (10:33 2nd) , A. Knutson (18:33 2nd)
MacU: C. Chorney (01:06 1st) , V. Scott (13:11 1st) , K. Chabot (13:40 1st) , E. Sundar (04:29 2nd) , D. Jean Jr. (04:48 2nd) , S. Simard (05:52 2nd) ,
L. Dowhaniuk (11:23 2nd)
Goal: TWU: Sommer L (20 shots, 15 saves), Audet (25 shots, 23 saves), MacU: Onyskiw (31 shots, 27 saves)

For a game with 11 goals, it is odd that none were scored in the 3rd period. Holy Trinity usually manages one close game per weekend, so maybe we have that in store for the rematch.

➤ UBC: Cougars overwhelm early, hand T-Birds rare loss to start 2026 (with boxscore and video)

Quick Summary
MRU: C. Bouchard (07:09 1st), S. Moe (07:31 1st) , T. Zandee (07:55 1st) , B. Stevenson (14:28 1st)
UBC: S. Mutala (10:29 2nd) , C. McNabb (11:56 3rd)
Goal: MRU: Farkas (27 shots, 25 saves), UBC: Mirwald (35 shots, 31 saves)

The Bluegars scored four times in a 1st period where they outshot the T-irds 19-8. They also outshot the T-irds 12-5 in the 2nd period, where UBC scored the only goal. UBC did rally on the 3rd period shot clock, with a 14-4 edge and the only goal. We’ll see if this is a trend or just a one-off for these two teams.

January 10, 2026: THREE GOALS AGAINST IN FIVE MINUTES KILL THE BISONS

SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES 5
MANITOBA BISONS 4

➤ Summary: Game Centre : Game Report
➤ UofS: Huskie Cap Off Weekend Sweep of Bisons With Comeback Win (with boxscore)
➤ UofM: Multi-goal night for Bisons Skylar Bruce ends in heartbreak after Huskies come back late in the third, win 5-4 (with boxscore)

Quick Summary
Sask: L. Keeler (11:34 1st) , D. Holt (19:15 1st) , D. Holt (14:45 3rd) , L. Bairos (16:35 3rd) , C. Roulette (19:14 3rd)
Man: B. Swetlikoff (13:29 1st) , S. Bruce (16:17 1st) , L. Brennan (18:59 2nd) , S. Bruce (11:09 3rd)
Goal: Sask: Maier (25 shots, 21 saves), Man: Holt (40 shots, 35 saves)

This was a disastrous blown lead for the Bisons. Up 4-2 with about 5 minutes to play in the 3rd period, and they never even took it to overtime. It’s late, so all I am posting is sthe bare-bones links.

➤ UofC: Dinos finish road sweep with 5-2 win (with boxscore)

This was a 3-2 game in the last minute of play, until the Dinos put it away. This was tight throughout. The Banjo-Cats seem to be finally playing up to expectations.

➤ TWU: Simchuk Gets Hatty in Spartans' Loss to Griffins (with boxscore)
➤ MacU: Griffins complete sweep of Spartans with 6-3 triumph, move into second in West Division (with boxscore and video)

Similar to the game in Regina, this was a one goal game late in the 3rd before two late goals embellished the scoreline. The Evil Monkeys are now in 3rd place in the West Division.

The T-irds held a 2-0 1st period lead, but the Bluegars came back to win in OT. Too bad all the games on Saturday overlapped.
