➤ UBC: ‘Birds run win streak to nine with another offensive showcase in Winnipeg (with boxscore)
➤ UofM: Bisons show late spark, but Thunderbirds complete sweep (with boxscore)
Quick Summary
UBC: M. Smith (02:51 1st) , K. Sadhra-Kang (17:39 1st) , C. Douglas (04:09 2nd) , C. McNabb (13:39 2nd) , S. Mutala (18:57 2nd) , N. Sullivan (19:42 2nd) , S. Mutala (18:59 3rd)
Man: Z. Turner (06:21 3rd) , B. Bonni (13:59 3rd) , E. Alarie (14:11 3rd) , L. Brenton (16:39 3rd)
Goal: UBC: Schwebius (21 shots, 17 saves), Man: Kieper (41 shots, 35 saves)
This was nearly the most miraculous comeback since Lazarus. Alas, it was not to be.
First up, the line-up changes from Friday for the Bisons were: Kieper replaced Holt as starting goaltender, Turner for Coyle on defence, and Dekay for Pasternak up front. I believe that Pasternak (the Friday night goal scorer) was injured. Joss was injured a couple weeks back. For the T-irds it was Schwebius for Mirwald in net, and Disher for Kotylak up front.
Late in the 2nd period, the T-irds held a 4-0 lead and things looked secure for them. Then, however, a pair of late powerplay goals made it 6-0 heading into the final frame. The shots were 35-8 and there was no reason to believe that the Bisons had the slightest hopes of salvaging a point.
But wait! The Bisons picked up the pace, rookie defenceman Zach Turner scored his 1st goal, and the T-irds started taking penalties. Those penalties turned into powerplay goals - three of them in two-and-a-half minutes. Defenceman Ben Bonni had his 1st, forward Eric Alarie had his 2nd, and defenceman Luke Brenton had his 2nd. Try as they might, the Bisons could get no closer. An empty-netter finally dashed their hopes.
In this game, the Bison forwards scored just once, making it two goals from them on the weekend. They will need to pick up the pace going forward.

Reg: C. Wirun (10:14 2nd)
Goal: Mac: Onyskiw (19 shots, 18 saves), Reg: Cunningjam (30 shots, 24 saves)
This one evaded my radar, I must admit. I had four screens going and the one on the U of R was showing their football game against the Banjo-Mutts. I guess that Regina is happy to at least have something in the win column at long last. The Family Guys thus keep their 50/50 going, now at 5-5-2.

Goal: Alta: Barthwick (33 shots, 28 saves), MRU: Sims (20 shots, 19 saves)
The Bluegars must have been feeling the heat after Friday’s loss, and rebounded in fine fashion. The Evil Monkeys continue to chip away but I really don’t see them returning to dynastic status this year. The rebuild is on, I reckon. The Monkeys are now 7-4-1, and the Bluegars are 5-5-0, one point ahead of the Bisons.

Goal: Sask: Kooy (28 shots, 26 saves), Calg: Stankowski (28 shots, 26 saves)
This one lived up to its billing. Too bad for the Banjo-Mutts that they could not hang on to a 2-0 1st period lead. At least they salvaged a point. Bedrock U is now 10-2-0, and have opened some space ahead of the 2nd place Mutts, who are 6-3-1.
