January 11, 2025: BISONS SALVAGE A SPLIT

TRINITY WESTERN SPARTANS 2
MANITOBA BISONS 7

➤ UofM: Bisons score four power play goals, beat Trinity Western 7-2
➤ TWU: Spartans Settle for Split with Manitoba Bisons

Quick Summary
TWU: C. Farren (08:51 2nd) , J. Krahn (06:02 3rd)
MAN: C. Behun (02:43 1st) , D. Pasternak (05:09 1st) , J. Hooker (18:13 1st) , E. Alarie (01:01 2nd) , E. Alarie (10:05 3rd) , S. Bruce (15:59 3rd) , M. King (18:28 3rd)
Goal: TWU: Sommer (L) (13 shots, 10 saves), Audet (14 shots, 10 saves), Man: Thornton (36 shots, 34 saves)

The Bisons are now in a salvage mode, to hopefully build a foundation for 2025-26. In that regard, this solid win is a positive sign.

Line-up wise, the Bisons rotated goaltenders and started Kolby Thornton. He did a good job. However, as on Friday, Holy Trinity’s shot total looked somewhat inflated. Most faceoffs were in their end, and the territory and possession would have favoured the Bisons. Nevertheless, only goals against on 36 shots is a credible performance. Also, Riley Zimmerman replaced Josh Paulhus and added some grit.

For the Spartans, defenceman Jake Jurgeneit was injured late in Friday’s game so they played one man down. (Many teams who purchase plane tickets do not take extra players.) They also had two new players not listed on their line-up card. Mikhail Simchuk (from Ukraine) and Yuji Akimoto (from Japan). Maybe next year the floogates will open and Holy Trinity will be an international juggernaut.

There were plenty of notable statistics in this one. Dawson Pasternak had his 1st goal as a Bison (in his 4th game) and two assists, Riley Stotts had five assists, Skylar Bruce had a goal, two assists, and six PIMs, and Eric Allarie had his 4th and 5th goals of the season. Captain Hooker also notched his 11th goal of the season. The Bison powerplay went 4-for-4.

To make up for this split, the Bisons need to steal a couple points next weekend in Saskatown. That is a tall order, but you never know.

Goal: MRU: Farkas (28 shots, 24 saves), UBC: Mirwald (20 shots, 18 saves)

The T-irds bounced back nicely from Friday’s decisive loss to claim a decisive win in this one. This was a chippy game. The Bluegars were 2-for-9 on the PP, and UBC went 1-for-6. Of the 15 penalties, none were coincidental. This pulls UBC within 3 points of MRU and keeps their hopes of a 1st place finish alive.

Quick Summary
Reg: K. Shindle (08:43 1st) , A. McNutt (10:40 2nd)
Sask: T. Prefontaine (02:25 2nd) , V. Loschiavo (03:39 2nd) , V. Loschiavo (07:19 2nd) , C. Stebbings (12:23 2nd) , C. Petruic (13:47 2nd) , C. Hayes (08:15 3rd) , C. Petruic (10:02 3rd)
Goal: Reg: Fellner (26 shots, 19 saves), Sask: Ross (24 shots, 22 saves)

For the Banjo-Cats, the good news is they led 1-0 after the 1st. Then came a 5-goal 2nd period for the Banjo-Mutts. Vince Loschiavo (his 9th & 10th) and Chantz Petruic (his 10th and 11th) each had two goals for the Mutts. There were just six minor penalties, surprisingly few for a rivalry game.

Goal: Calg: Tetachuk (30 shots, 25 saves), Alta: Palmer (15 shots, 14 saves)

Bedrock U has been slipping. Looks like they will finish 3rd in the West, which means they would travel to either Alberta or Sask for the quarter-final round. They played two men short, so this is a challenging season for the Dinos. The Evil Monkeys are back to their normal race with Sask for 1st place.

After an ill-timed split against Holy Trinity, the Bisons desperately need a win on the road in Saskatown against the Banjo-Mutts. The Bisons have largely under-performed this year, with a 3-3-0 home record combined against Trinity and Regina. With the Banjo-Mutts and Evil Monkeys battling for 1st place, it won’t be easy. The Bisons do have three of the CW’s Top 20 scorers (Riley Stotts, Jonny Hooker, and Skyler Bruce). Kolby Thornton is tied for 3rd amongst goaltenders with a .916 S%. Incidentally, Sask’s two goaltenders rank 1st (Roddy Ross at .926) and 2nd (Jordan Kooy at .921).

On paper, this is the mismatch of the week. However, the Banjo-Cats have the occasional decent weekend and the Evil Monkeys have the occasional dud (like their non-conference game against NAIT). So you never know.

This is a home-and-home between the 2nd schools in Calgary and Edmontown. The Bluegars could use a sweep in the fight for 1st place, while the Family Guys could use some points to keep their distance from the Bisons.

TRINITY WESTERN SPARTANS (13-6-1, 6-20-1, OHT35 #30)

This is another home-and-home series. Holy Trinity has never beaten the T-irds, and rarely make it close. The T-irds cannot sacrifice any points in this series. The Spartans are purely playing spoilers right now, because catching the Dinos for 3rd place seems next to impossible.

Sask: L. Kosior (02:59 1st) , M. Gross (13:48 1st) , C. Petruic (03:52 2nd) , A. Ferster (04:59 2nd) , V. Loschiavo (11:58 2nd) , L. Kosior (07:33 3rd) , C. Stebbings (13:13 3rd)
Goal: Man: Holt (31 shots, 24 saves), Sask: Ross (21 shots, 19 saves)

This win secured a playoff berth for the Banjo-Mutts. Despite the score, this was actually a close game. I really hope that the Bisons start Kolby Thornton in Saturday’s rematch. It would greatly enhance their odds of winning. Holt made some good saves, and Sask went 2-for-3 on the PP, but still some timely saves in the 2nd period could have given the Bisons a chance.

Trailing 2-0 after the 1st, Caden Zaplitny brought the Bisons within one. However, three straight goals by the Mutts and the Bisons were effectively out of the game. Ben Bonni scored one heading into the 2nd intermission to make it 5-2 but that was as close as it got.

I tuned out late in the 3rd period to check in on other games, and missed a bit of a tussle. With two minutes left, Bison Grady Lane got two minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct and two 10-minute misconducts. Mutt Ashton Ferster got two minutes for head-butting and a 10-minute misconduct, then with one second left got another two minutes for head-butting. I might have to check the on-demand replay.

The new building in Saskatown is ideal for the CW. They had 1,195 at the game, on a good night for attendance across the CW.

The LeagueStat links now appear to have vanished altogether, for both the CW and OUA. Hence, no more links. The Game Centre option has all the information, but is not nearly as good as an out-of-town scoreboard when one is in attendance at a game.

This was UBC’s annual Winter Classic game, and they sold out the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre with almost 5,000 fans. Holy Trinity provided stout opposition and a break or two could have provided their first ever win over their provincial rivals. It took an empty-netter to solidify this win. Goal: Man: Thornton (56 shots, 51 saves), Sask: Kooy (12 shots, 12 saves)

The Bisons had a sub-par 1st period, followed by disastrous 2nd and 3rd periods.

It was 1-0 for Sask after the 1st period, where they outshot the Bisons 15-6 and scored on one of their three powerplays. Kolby Thornton had a solid period, and things were optimistic in the 2nd period. However, the Bisons were outshot 18-1. Thornton kept the score at 1-0, so there was an element of optimism for the 3rd period.

However, the Bison forwards never mounted any serious attack in the 3rd period. The Bisons were outshot 23-5. The Bison defence was running around aimlessly and only when Thornton bailed them out did the game stop getting too far out-of-hand. Of note, the Mutts went 4-for-7 on the powerplay on the evening.

The CW schedule on Saturday had a nice stagger to it (Bisons at 5:00, this at 6:00, the others at 8:00 and 9:00) so I was able to catch the end of this one. Despite entering the period down 2-1, the Family Guys mustered a paltry four shots in the 3rd period. Justin Lies had his 13th and 14th goals of the season for the Bluegars, both on the powerplay. It was hard to believe that the Family Guys were so incapable of making a concerted effort to tie the game, but they were thoroughly checked into the ice.

Reg: C. Whyte (10:13 1st) , N. Wills (18:10 2nd) , M. Culling (01:08 3rd)
Alta: B. Hyland (14:12 1st) , S. Tschigerl (06:15 3rd) , A. de la Gorgendiere (08:37 3rd) , A. de la Gorgendiere (12:49 3rd) , J. Hall (14:39 3rd) , J. Hall (17:57 3rd)
Goal: Reg: Evanoff (44 shots, 39 saves), Alta: Palmer (21 shots, 18 saves)

This one looked like a potential upset. The Banjo-Cats scored a minute into the 3rd period to lead 3-1. However, the Evil Monkeys soared back with five unanswered goals. The Cats had a chance to tie it at 4-4 on a late powerplay, but gave up a shorthanded goal, followed by an empty-netter, instead.

Quick Summary
UBC: C. Latimer (10:28 1st) , J. Wright (17:20 1st) , C. McNabb (16:25 2nd) , S. Atkinson (18:36 2nd) , C. McDonald (16:22 3rd) , T. Thorpe (03:36 1st OT)
TWU: M. Lamoureux (15:13 1st) , K. McMillen (05:13 2nd) , D. DuBois (00:54 3rd) , J. Krahn (10:03 3rd) , M. Lamoureux (15:34 3rd)
Goal: UBC: Mirwald (24 shots, 19 saves), TWU: Audet (41 shots, 35 saves)

The evening nightcap was a heck of rollercoaster ride. The T-irds led 4-2 after two periods, hardly surprising. But then came Holy Trinity’s 3rd period rally. They scored three times to take a 5-4 lead with less than five minutes remaining. With an embarassing defeat staring them in the face, the T-irds tied it late and then won in overtime. The T-irds are now 31-0-0 against Holy Trinity (27-0-0 since TWU joined the CW), with two overtime games.

The situation is simple for the Bisons if they want a playoff berth: Sweep the Family Guys to pull within 4 points with 6 games remaining after this weekend. In the last five years, the Herd is 6-3-1 against the Mutants. Therefore they should have some degree of confidence. Will the goaltending come through? Will their highly touted forwards generate some offence? Will the depleted defence find enough duct tape to hold it together for the weekend? We’ll see.

Each side has two stories linked on their websites, for your further reading. However, LeagueStat has just the Media Stats page.

The T-irds are in an almost desperate bid to catch MRU in the race for 1st place in the West Division, whilst the Banjo-Cats are simply looking to play spoiler. I have a hunch that the Kittens have an upset left in them before this season is over. If things get tough in this one, the Tweety Birds may have to call upon an old lady armed with an umbrella to fend off the evil Puddy Tats.

The Dinos’ players and staff on loan to Team Canada’s Universiade team will be back, perhaps with a bit of jet lag. Meanwhile, Holy Trinity came oh-so-close to an upset of UBC last weekend. Although these teams are 3rd and 4th in the West Division, Holy Trinity hasn’t got enough games left on the schedule to make a run at that playoff berth.

Team Canada won a 2nd straight gold medal, however without the Russkies around this loses a lot of lustre. Plenty of other strong hockey countries also do not send teams. Others, like Ukraine, send a U25 national team. Wikipedia has all scores and standings. Here’s a quick recap:

Gold medal: Canada 3 Slovakia 1
Bronze medal: Ukraine 5 U.S.A. 3
5th place: Czechia 2 Kazakhstan 5
7th place: Japan 6 South Korea 1
9th place: Sweden 4 Poland 3 (so)

Man: J. Hooker (15:56 2nd) , S. Bruce (06:23 3rd) , J. Hooker (11:09 3rd) , J. Arpin (11:45 3rd)
Goal: MacU: Epp (26 shots, 22 saves), Man: Thornton (L) (19 shots, 14 saves), Holt (9 shots, 9 saves)

What a night in the CW. All four games were decided by one goal, and two in a shoot-out.

This loss leaves the Bisons with only a theoretical chance at a playoff berth. Including Saturday’s matinee, they have seven games remaining and, if they win them all, MacEwan would have to win two or fewer of their remaining games. (Or six Bison wins and one MacEwan win, or five Bison wins and no MacEwan wins, to be technically correct.)

For a must-win game, the Bisons came out dead. The generated next to nothing in the first period and fell behind 3-0. Goaltender Kolby Thornton had a defence doing a washing machine impersonation on the first two goals, then came a powerplay marker.

The second period saw a Bison revival. However, two quickies by the Family Guys mid-period chased Thornton from the net in a 5-0 game. The game turned around as the Bisons carried the play. Captain Hooker scored on the PP, and a couple of close shaves ended the period.

I admit that my optimism level was rather low entering the 3rd period. Skylar Bruce (his 9th) and Captain Hooker (his 13th) scored PP goals and suddenly it’s 5-3. Then as the PA announcer was ready to announce the 3rd goal, Jackson Arpin scored on a scramble to make it 5-4. The Bisons still had 8 minutes to tie, and even win, the game. However, Brett Epp in the MacU net held the fort. With less than two minutes left, Dawson Pasternak’s slashing penalty in the offensive zone stifled the comeback, and a last-minute too-many-men penalty was the final nail in the coffin.

I warned everybody about Regina. They could well play spoiler, and it almost happened here at the expense of the T-irds. The crazy stat here is that UBC outshot the Banjo-Cats 10-0 in overtime. I was unable to see any of this game.

This was the feature game of the evening, and it looks like it lived up to its billing. Of course, it started even with the Bison game so I missed it. (I spied on the Jets’ game on my cell phone.) The teams rotated goals all night. Chantz Petruic notched his 13th and 14th goals of the season for the Mutts (including the winner) while Sean Tschigerl scored his 16th and 17th for the Evil Monkeys. They also drew more than 2,000 in Saskatown for this one.

I managed to see the ending of this one, and it was worthwhile. Holy Trinity isn’t much on paper but they are playing hard. They had leads of 2-0 and 3-2 at various points in this game, but needed a late goal by Conner Farren to force OT. Bedrock U was led by Carter Massier, who had his 2nd, 3rd, and 4th goals of the season. Neither side is likely to budge from their current placements.

Goal: MacU: Ward (27 shots, 21 saves), Man: Holt (34 shots, 31 saves)

After an interesting Friday night, Saturday was a letdown in the CW. The other oddity was the start times. The Bison game was a 2:00 pm matinee. The rest all started at 5:00 CST.

GoBisons.ca posted their Friday story in the wee hours of Saturday morning, and they got something wrong. The good folks at MacEwan got that something right. That something is with respect to the Bisons’ playoff chances. Slim, yes. None, no. The Bisons are 8 points behind The Family Guys, and each team has 6 games (or 12 potential points) remaining. The Bisons hold the tie-breaker (5-4 in points in head-to-head games). So 6 wins for the Herd, and two or fewer for Mac, and the Bisons are off to the playoffs.

The Mac side of the equation is not unreasonable. Their remaining series are Saskatchewan, Calgary, and Regina. I would say their likely outcome is around 4 points in that set.

However, the Bisons’ remaining games are against Regina, Alberta, and Saskatchewan and the Bisons have yet to beat a “Tier 1" opponent this year. So doing it 4-straight to end the season seems unlikely.

Now, back to this matinee. The Bisons had productive performances from three leading players. Skylar Bruce had his 10th and 11th goals of the season, Jonny Hooker had his 14th and 15th goals of the season (and 3rd and 4th of the weekend), and Riley Stotts had a goal and two assists, giving him 6 goals and 22 assists on the season. Sophomore d-man Lucas Fry scored the winner, and his 1st as a Bison, breaking a 3-3 deadlock in the 3rd period. For the 2nd game in a row, the Bisons scored three PP goals.

Lucas Fry enjoyed his 1st goal as a Bison.

Once 5:00 p.m. hit, I switched over to the Monkeys/Mutts showdown for 1st place. Thus, I never caught this one. This win gives the T-irds a one point lead over the idle Bluegars, who have two games in hand. I favour MRU to nab 1st place. UBC has a bye then plays Sask and Calgary. MRU, meanwhile, has Calgary, Regina, and Holy Trinity. The teams are 3-3 head-to-head.

I focussed on this game once the 5:00 p.m. trilogy started. The Banjo-Mutts took charge early then coasted. Despite entering the 3rd period down 4-1, the Evil Monkeys managed just four shots in the 3rd. Over the last two years, no CW team has been able to be the “hot” item for too long. We’ll see if Sask can keep this going into the playoffs.

I was only able to catch a few minutes of this game during the intermission of the feature game. The Dinos had a decisive edge but not so one-sided as you might think. Of note, Raphael Audet was yanked from the Holy Trinity net after giving up goals on the first two shots he faced, after just 1:40 of play. Bedrock U is stranded on a 3rd place island right now, and are just getting primed for a road playoff series, possibly in Edmontown against the Evil Monkeys.

The Bisons are off to Banjoland in a desperate bid to stay in the playoff hunt. They need to close 4 of the 8 points they need to catch MacEwan in this series.

One of the reasons for the Bison predicament this year is their two home losses to these Banjo-Cats earlier in the season. Regina is 9th in goals for (43) and 8th in goals against (106). Really, they have no basis for team pride. However, they look like they will play spoiler at some point in this homestretch.

Meanwhile, the Bison powerplay is the one bright spot thus far. They rank 2nd in the CW at 30.2%, just behind Sask. Regina is last at just 8.8%. The Bisons continue to be led by three PPG scorers, Riley Stotts (6-22-28), Jonny Hooker (15-10-25), and Skyler Bruce (11-14-25). Dawson Pasternak has played just 8 games but is 1-8-9.

Holy Trinity came awfully close to registering an upset over UBC last week, taking one game to a shoot-out. I reckon they might have one close game on the weekend here. The Evil Monkeys’ losses to Sask last weekend likely has them resigned to a 2nd place finish.

SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES (18-4-0, 27-5-0], OHT35 #1

The Banjo-Mutts look like they are peaking, having swept the Monkeys last weekend and moving into #1 in the OHT35 national rankings. The Family Guys’ preview says that 3 is their magic number for a playoff spot. True, 3 wins gets them there. But so does 5 points. The Bisons will be keeping an eye on the out-of-town scoreboard here.

Friday’s game is the annual Crowchild Classic game at the Saddledome, which means a large crowd. The Dinos have had trouble putting 20 players on the ice this year. Their odds of moving up from 3rd place are quite remote, making this playoff prep for them. The Bluegars need to finally break through, grab 1st place, and make a solid run to the nationals. A win or two this weekend would go a long way on that.

The Bisons needed a win, and got it. Braden Holt picked up his first shutout and assist. Skylar Bruce led the way with his 12th and 13th goals of the season. His second goal was a nice one, reminiscent of one of Kyle Connor’s goals earlier this week for the Jets.

This was the annual Crowchild Classic. The Saddledome was jammed to the rafters, and never before in hockey history had so many cute young ladies jammed into one place. The game looked good, too. The stream was NHL-calibre. This was an odd game because the Bluegars dominated the play, but were unable to get one past veteran Carl Tetachuk in the Bedrock net. It was a yabba-dabba-doo time for the red team.

Goal: Man: Holt (36 shots, 35 saves), Reg: Evanoff (24 shots, 21 saves)

Finally, a sweep for the Bisons. This allows them to gain just one point on The Family Guys, who had an OTL. The stats highlights on this one are:

- The Bisons scored two more powerplay goals (on 5 chances), to go with their 1-for-3 effort on Friday. They now are 2nd in the conference with a 30.9% success rate.

- Dawson Pasternak recorded his 10th, 11th, and 12th assists of the season. He never played until December 6th (due to injury rehab from last year). In 10 GP he now has four 3-point games. I suspect he will get more than just the one goal he has so far because he always makes the opposing defence run around in circles when he’s out there.

- Braden Holt had his best weekend of the season defending the Bison net.

On a rulebook note, the Bisons had a goal waived off. The left post on the Banjo-Cats’ net was off its moorings. There was no whistle. The puck went in to the middle of the net, unaffected by the position of the post. Isn’t that a good goal now? Discuss.

After the Bison game I focussed on the Jets on one screen and this one on the other. This was a tight battle all the way through. The Banjo-Mutts were not as good as they have been recently, but still registered their 11th straight win. Still, that one point for The Family Guys makes it that much harder for the Bisons to steal that final playoff spot.

After the Sask/Mac game ended I was going to focus on the Battle of Bedrock. However, when I switched over at intermission this was an unexpected battle. Holy Trinity don’t look like much on paper, but they have improved a lot from the start of the season. They were leading this one 2-1 until the Evil Monkeys exploded with 3 goals in less than 3 minutes late in the 2nd period.

This weekend wraps up the Bisons’ home schedule for the season. There are now just two weekends left in the season. This is also the end of the schedule for the Evil Monkeys.

The linked story is on Evan Toth, who is seeking entry to medical school next year. The Herd staved off elimination with a 3-game winning streak. Now comes the hard part. They trail MacEwan by 5 points and have to get something off the Evil Monkeys this weekend. Maybe the Bisons’ top-calibre powerplay can cash in while they get a hot goaltending performance, or two.

A cat fight! This Cougar v Cougar fight moves from the country bar to the ice for the only time this year. The Banjo-Cats are simply playing spoiler. I tend to suspect that they may have an upset left in their bag-of-tricks. Maybe next weekend against MacEwan?

MACEWAN GRIFFINS (9-12-3, 12-15-3, OHT35 #18)

This home-and-home series will have the Bisons’ full attention. Bedrock U has been hard to get a grip on this year. They often had to play short due to injuries. They are seemingly stuck in 3rd in the west, and should be getting primed for an away quarter-final match-up.

SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES (20-4-0, 29-5-0, OHT35 #1)

This should be the best series to watch for neutral viewers. Catching the Bluegars could be hard for the T-irds, and Sask could put a grip on 1st in the east.

February 7, 2025: BISONS WIN, FAINT HOPES REMAIN ALIVE

ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS 2
MANITOBA BISONS 3
(in overtime)

Links:
➤ Summary: Game Centre
➤ Game report: CW
➤ UofA: Team Website
➤ UofM: Men's hockey welcome Alberta for huge tilt during seniors weekend

Quick Summary
Alta: E. Florchuk (06:23 2nd) , A. Hall (09:12 2nd)
Man: E. Alarie (07:44 2nd) , S. Bruce (07:36 3rd) , D. Pasternak (02:57 1st OT)
Goal: Alta: Palmer (23 shots, 20 saves), Man: Holt (44 shots, 42 saves)

This was the best game of the year at the Wayne Fleming Arena so far. However, the Bisons never gained any ground on MacEwan and remain two points away from elimination (any combination of points gained by MacEwan or lost by the Bisons).

Here’s how they lined up:

MANITOBA
Goal:
31 Holt (34 Hawryluk)

Defence:
8 Toth - 6 Fry
24 Wareham - 25 Calder
5 Casey - 29 King

Forwards:
9 Alaria - 18 Hooker - 26 Boucher
23 Lane - 20 Zaplitny - 21 Pasternak
14 Zimmerman - 22 Stotts - 17 Bruce
13 Sutter - 19 Arpin - 28 Behun

Scratches:
Goal: 30 Thornton
Defence: 4 Malchuk - 15 Bonni
Forwards: 10 Paulhus - 11 Ostir - 12 Trimble - 16 Joss

ALBERTA
Goal:
31 Palmer (30 Kruger)

Defence:
5 de la Gorgendiere - 27 Lajoie
24 Ward - 3 Sexsmith
8 Carmichael - 52 Belcourt

Forwards:
36 Hyland - 16 Tschigerl - 10 Prokop
17 Thacker - 9 J Hall - 11 Preziuso
13 Nash - 14 Florchuk - 12 A Hall
19 MacGregor - 26 Popowich - 20 Lamanna

Scratches:
Goal: 1 Lawczynski
Defence: 4 Gustafson - 37 Leslie
Forwards: 15 Laventure - 18 McClennon - 21 Boyko - 23 Smallwood - 64 Ruiz

The Bisons were short two important defencemen, but still pieced together a decent team defence. Forward Michael King moved back to the blueline (he also played there against the Manitoba Moose in pre-season). Both Ape goals were aginst the Toth/Fry combo. None came from sustained pressure, as is normally the case. Florchuk’s goal arose when he was left alone in the slot, and A Hall’s goal came from a 2-on-1 break arising from a puck fumbled at the blueline.

Alarie’s goal was his 7th and came from a 3-way passing play with sophomores Boucher and Calder. Bruce’s goal was his 14th and was a powerplay marker set up nicely by Hooker and Pasternak. In overtime, Pasternak converted a pass into the high slot from Toth and Zaplitny into the GWG. He has shown tremendous offensive skills since coming off the injured list. A whole season from him would be something to see. He makes the opponent run around in circles every shift it seems.

Of note, the Evil Monkeys wore their white jerseys with the monkey logo, and the Bisons wore their alternate gold/tan set. It was a nice combo.

Saturday is Senior’s Day, of which the Bisons have just three: Andre Sutter, Evan Toth, and Hayden Ostir. Before the CIAU brought in a 5-year maximum, some of Tom Watt’s U of T players in med school (or something similar) would play through bachelors, masters, and doctorates. Toth could do so for one more year, I suppose.

Pasternak, after scoring the OT winner.

Calg: J. Joseph (08:25 2nd)
Goal: MacU: Epp (37 shots, 36 saves), Calg: Tetachuk (17 shots, 14 saves)

The Bisons were cheering for Bedrock U in this one, but it was not to be. The Dinos have been looking wobbly down the stretch. They did carry the play in this one, but that doesn’t matter now. The Bisons really need their help on Saturday.

Goal: Reg: Evanoff (57 shots, 48 saves), MRU: Sims (16 shots, 16 saves)

If you think that the score here is a crazy stat, consider this: After two periods, the Bluegars outshot the Banjo-Cats 45-5. The MRU powerplay was 8-for-12. And Josh Tarzwell had his 12th, 13th, 14th, and 15th goals of the season. To their credit, the Kittens had a decent 3rd period, outshot just 12-11 and outscored 2-0. Small mercies, indeed.

The Banjo-Mutts’ winning streak ended in fine form out in British California. Only 17 shots on goal. So far, nobody has been able to stay on top of the CW for very long before coming back to the pack.

➤ UofA (Friday late): Bisons get past Golden Bears in OT (with boxscore)
➤ UofM (Friday late): Pasternak nets the winner, Bisons shock nationally ranked Alberta, keep playoff hopes alive with 3-2 OT win (with boxscore)

Quick Summary
Alta: S. Tschigerl (04:17 1st) , N. Boyko (10:36 1st) , A. Thacker (18:50 1st) , T. Nash (09:47 2nd) , E. Carmichael (15:23 2nd) , B. Hyland (01:45 3rd) , S. Tschigerl (05:18 3rd)
Man: J. Hooker (15:06 1st) , R. Stotts (02:51 2nd) , S. Bruce (07:04 2nd) , D. Pasternak (19:08 3rd)
Goal: Alta: Kruger (14 shots, 10 saves), Man: Holt L (35 shots, 28 saves), Hawryluk (8 shots, 8 saves)

For a while, the miracle comeback looked like it could happen. But, alas, it did not. To plagiarize Dylan Thomas, the Bisons tried to rage against the dying of the light but, in the end, must go gentle into that good night.

The Bisons lined up exactly as they did on Friday night, but the Evil Monkeys made a few changes. Ethan Kruger started in net with Tyler Palmer backing up. Up front, Boyko and Laventure moved from the stands to the forward lines, to replace Lamanna and McGregor, the latter of which moved to the blueline to replace Sexsmith.

Whereas on Friday night the Bisons avoided mayhem inside their blueline, that was not the case in Saturday’s matinee. The first goal arose from a wonky line change where the Bisons never quite settled on their positions, and the second goal was one where Holt just plain whiffed on a clear shot from 5 or 6 feet inside the blueline.

However, even though trailing 2-0, being outshot 17-0, and playing shorthanded with 5 minutes left, Captain Hooker received a perfect tape-to-tape pass from Dawson Pasternak while in full flight and scored on a pure breakaway. That caused the Bisons to pick up their play, and had their own powerplay late in the period. However, Eric Alarie returned the favour when he mishandled the puck in the neutral zone. The vaunted Bison powerplay not only did not score in this series, they surrendered six breakaways, but this was the only one Braden Holt did not save.

All hope looked lost, until the Bisons turned the game around in the 2nd period. Riley Stotts pounced on a loose puck and scored his 7th on a breakaway. Then Skylar Bruce scored his 15th when he and several Bisons were pounding on a loose puck in the Monkey crease as no d-man was willing or able to play the body. The shots were 23-6, but the score was 3-3!

The Evil Monkeys took charge of the game once again, with a pair of goals to end the 2nd, and two more early in the 3rd. Dawson Pasternak scored in the last minute to pad his stats. (He is now 3-13-16 in 12 Gps.) Of note, Sean Tschigerl notched is 19th and 20th goals of the season.

Ross Hawryluk finally got some playing time in a regular season game, finishing the last 10 minutes for the Bisons. His GAA is therefore 0.00 and he has a 1.000 S%!

UBC: C. Douglas (09:57 2nd) , J. Williams (14:27 2nd)
Goal: Sask: Kooy (27 shots, 25 saves), UBC: Schwebius (29 shots, 27 saves)

This was twi-night game, starting at 3:00 PST or 5:00 CST. I got home just in time to see Sask score in the last second of the 2nd period to narrow UBC’s lead to 2-1. Without video replay it is tough to tell whether it entered the net before or after the buzzer.

Chance Petruic scored his 17th and 18th goals of the season, both on the powerplay, to tie the game. Oddly, he was the only Banjo-Mutt to miss in the shoot-out, which they won 2-1. The two points pulls them within one point of the Evil Monkeys, who have finished their regular season. The Mutts and Monkeys are 3-3-0 against one another, so I don’t know who has the tiebreaker. I have a hunch that the Mutts will get a at least a split against the Bisons next weekend.

MacU: L. Ryan (03:49 2nd)
Goal: Calg: Stankowski (18 shots, 17 saves), MacU: Epp (28 shots, 25 saves)

The urgency level on this one likely subsided when The Family Guys discovered that the Bisons had lost, thus securing a playoff berth. I had to do a double-take on Carl Stankowski appearing in the Bedrock U net. I thought he was long gone. After he and Tetachuk formed a duo, this was just Stankowski’s 2nd game of the season. His lifetime stats are 22-7-0 record, 2.11 GAA, and .911 S%. These teams are assured of being the two 3rd place teams. In the new cross-over playoff format, that means the Dinos would likely face the Monkeys, and the Griffins would likely face UBC.

Goal: Reg: Fellner (54 shots, 46 saves), MRU: Farkas (23 shots, 20 saves)

I saw only a small portion of this one. It was not as bad as the scoreboard might suggest. This was tied 3-3 after the 2nd period. But what a 3rd period! The Bluegars got 5 goals, the Banjo-Cats got 5 shots on goal. Jayden Wiens had his 7th, 8th, and 9th goals of the season for the Bluegars.

MRU has a two-point lead on UBC, and finishes their season against Holy Trinity whilst UBC faces Calgary. MRU and UBC are 3-3-0 against one another, but I don’t foresee MRU losing out here. But we’ll see.
