October 26, 2024: FIRST OTL FOR THE HERD

➤ MacU: Simard's overtime buzzer beater lifts Griffins to come-from-behind 4-3 win over Manitoba (with boxscore and video)

Quick Summary
Man: K. Calder (00:45 1st) , J. Arpin (19:07 1st) , J. Hooker (09:20 2nd)
Mac: C. Chorney (05:36 1st) , V. Scott (06:05 1st) , B. Boyle (16:10 2nd) , S. Simard (04:57 1st OT)
Goal: Man: Thornton (37 shots, 33 saves), Mac: Ward (36 shots, 33 saves)

This was a challenging afternoon, as Saturday matinees often are. There was an NHL double-header (games at noon and 3:00 p.m.) and the Bison football team had their regular season finale with first place on the line. (The Bisons beat the T-irds 51-38 in a game the T-irds had to win by 23 points to replace the Bisons in first place.)

Kolby Thornton had his first start in the Bison goal. The Bisons had a 3-2 lead in the 3rd period and allowed a short-handed goal to tie it. Arpin and Calder had their first goals of the season.

Ward foils Zaplitny.

Goal: Alta: Palmer (17 shots, 14 saves), UBC: Schwebius (25 shots, 24 saves)

This one looked funny because it had to be played at a secondary arena, after originally being slated for the Father David Bauer Arena (Vancouver edition). It was not really designed for video cameras. In any event, this ended the Evil Monkeys’ 7-0 start to the season, and was a much-needed win for the T-irds, to show they could beat somebody other than Holy Trinity. Monkey Sean Tschigerl had his 6th goal of the season.

Sask: D. Holt (01:20 1st) , D. Holt (03:53 1st) , L. Keeler (00:16 3rd) , A. Ferster (12:42 3rd)
Goal: MRU: Farkas (29 shots, 25 saves), Sask: Kooy (40 shots, 37 saves)

This was a pretty good game, on a night when the Bluegars joined the Evil Monkeys as teams no longer unbeaten. MRU had a good edge in play in the 1st period (outshooting the Banjo-Mutts 16-5), but it was still tied 2-2. Thereafter, the game was evan as can be, but the Mutts cashed in on their chances. There was a bit of a brouhaha at the final whistle. However, in the absence of misconducts and major penalties, I would not anticipate any suspensions for next week. Of note, the Bluegars were 0-for-6 and the Mutts were 0-for-3 on the PP.

Goal: TWU: Sommer (36 shots, 33 saves), Calg: Martin (17 shots, 16 saves)

I mostly overlooked this game due to the smorgasbord of options I had. The Jets on HNIC, the World Serious, and the other CW games overshadowed this one. Since it was the late game, I did see the ending.

Bedrock U had one more player in this game, thus they were only three short. This was also a very chippy game. Still, Holy Trinity seemed determined to put in a good effort and were down just 3-0 mid-way through the 3rd period. They even pulled their goalie on a 3rd period PP but gave up an insurance goal with 8 minutes left. Quite a gamble. They wound up giving up two empty-net goals.

Before I turned in for the night, some links had not been posted in the CW, and some scores not reported in the ACAC and BCIHL. Manitoba, Alberta, and Mount Royal have not posted stories yet.

So here is my first morning-after post of the season.

In the four seasons before this one, the Bisons are just 2-11-1 against the Banjo-Mutts, including 0-4-0 last year. The Mutts also won 2-1 in a pre-season game this year.

This year, the Bisons have bolstered their roster. However, the blue line is a bit thin when injuries set in. The Herd has four forwards at or above a point-per-game. In six games, Jonny Hooker is 3-5-8, Riley Stotts is 1-6-7, Skyler Bruce is 4-2-6, and Hayden Ostir is 3-3-6. Meanwhile, the Mutts have just two: Dawson Holet in 8 games is 4-7-11 and Chance Petruik in 7 games is 3-4-7.

In net, the Bisons gave Kolby Thornton is first start last weekend. IMO, it is a good idea to split the starts when teams play Friday night and Saturday at 1:00 p.m. We’ll see.

Meanwhile, the Mutts have thus far started Roddy Ross every Friday and Jordan Kooy every Saturday.

In an interesting stat, the Mutts lead the league with 161 PIMs. Calgary at 145 PIMs and UBC at 119 PIMs are the only other teams in three figures. The Bisons have just 66 PIMs, 6th in the CW.

The T-irds are coming off a split against the Evil Monkeys, whilst The Family Guys split with the Bisons. So now we know that the T-irds can beat somebody other than Holy Trinity or Simon Fraser’s Globetrotters Team. If the T-irds want to be seen as a Tier 1 CW team, they need to sweep a series like this one.

This is the Battle in the Basement. The Banjo-Cats have looked a lot better than Holy Trinity from what I have seen. However, will home ice give the Saintly Spartans a boost? Regina is 1-3-0 against Manitoba and MacEwan, so they must really sweep a series like this to keep their hopes alive.

This was a well-played game, and the Bisons could well have picked up two points. The Bisons led 1-0 and 2-1, and the Banjo-Mutts led 3-2. The Bisons tied the game with just two seconds left to force OT. 3-on-3 OT is not what it used to be. It was five minutes of defensiveness and not any close calls.

The Banjo-Mutts had two preventable game-tying goals. The first one came from a bad attempt to clear when they forgot the old adage “boards and glass will save your @$$”. The second tying goal occurred directly off a face-off caused by a silly icing call. My pet peeve is icing the puck when between your blue line and centre ice.

Holt makes a save.

The Bisons never got any offence going in this one. However, they were organized in their own end and were only down 2-0 almost mid-way through the 3rd period. However, they appeared deflated when the Banjo-Mutts scored on a 4-minute PP. On the night, Sask was 2-for-3 on the PP, and the Bisons 0-for-4.

The Bisons have a bye week next, followed by a home series with MRU.

GMU: M. Pasemko (16:23 1st) , L. Ryan (11:05 2nd) , C. Cabana (02:04 3rd) , L. Dowhaniuk (02:20 3rd) , M. Pasemko (16:05 3rd)
Goal: UBC: Mirwald (14 shots, 10 saves), MacU: Ironside (33 shots, 32 saves)

Once again, this game overlapped with Bison coverage. Carson Ironside made his CW debut in the Family Guys net, and had a good night. However, fellow rookie netminder Brett Mirwald had a rough night, stopping just 10 of 14 shots.

Goal: Reg: Evanoff (30 shots, 26 saves), TWU: Sommer (35 shots, 33 saves)

IMO, this weekend result kills the hopes of the Banjo-Cats. Holy Trinity played one man short. The score is a bit misleading, in that Trinity’s last two goals were empty-netters. It is very hard for me to imagine TWU catching Calgary, MRU, or UBC, which they must do to make the playoffs.

Preview: November 8-9, 2024: BISONS’ BYE WEEK

Bye weeks are yucky. But with 9 teams, they have to happen. The Bisons opened with a bye week, but inserted some non-conference play. Now they’ll have to sit back to watch Jets v Stars and Bombers v Riders in quite a Saturday double-header. The CW scheduling has been awkward. After this weekend, some teams will have played 12 games, whilst the Bisons have played just 8.

After two losses on the road against Holy Trinity, the Banjo-Cats desperately need some upsets on home ice. They looked atrocious last weekend. They are capable of much better. Big question: Will Bedrock U have a full roster? They have had to play short before they had the bye last week.

The home-and-home Battle of Edmontown should not be a foregone conclusion. The Evil Monkeys are heavy favourites. The Family Guys stole one from UBC last week, so cannot be counted out. The Monkeys have played just two games against Tier One opposition in the CW. Is their record a bit misleading?

This is my most-anticipated series of the weekend. If the T-irds are swept, they will have a tough time getting back into the pennant race. The Bluegars are currently 5 points ahead of the T-irds, with two games in hand. The last time they played, the Bluegars scored three times in the last minute to steal a 4-3 win.

November 8, 2024: A BISON-FREE FRIDAY

With the Bisons on a bye week, it was a bit of a disappointing evening. There was just one good game, and that was one which surprised me.

Reg: C. Whyte (04:31 3rd)
Goal: Calg: Tetachuk (22 shots, 21 saves), Reg: Evanoff (31 shots, 29 saves)

The Banjo-Cats rebounded from last week’s disastrous road-trip with a solid effort against Bedrock U. After two periods it was a 0-0 game, with shots even at 14-14. Regina scored early in the 3rd, then had a powerplay where they could have taken charge. However, Bedrock U’s Jadon Joseph stepped out of the box and scored on the ensuing breakaway. The Dinos got a bit of luck, after sustained pressure, and scored with a minute left, followed shortly by an empty-netter. Tough luck, Kittens. Final note: The Bedrock roster was two men short.

Goal: TWU: Sommer (46 shots, 40 saves), Sask: Kooy (21 shots, 20 saves)

Well, it looks like last week may have been the apex of Holy Trinity’s season. They had to play one man down in this one, and the Banjo-Mutts disposed of them rather handily. Each side had two roughing calls, and Spartan Matteo Lamoureux had a 5-&-a-game in the mid-2nd period.

Goal: MacU: Ironside (L) (10 shots, 6 saves) Ward (25 shots, 23 saves), Alta: Kruger (23 shots, 20 saves)

My focus on the Regina-Calgary game caused me to overlook this encounter. The Evil Monkeys scored four goals in less than 13 minutes, chasing starting goaltender Carson Ironside from The Family Guys’ goal. The game was basically over at that time.

I was looking forward to this as the feature match-up of the weekend. But Friday night was a dud. The T-irds owe the Bluegars revenge after that miracle come-back earlier in the season. In this one, the T-irds dominated the 1st period, outshooting the Bluegars 13-2. However, it was just 1-0. In the 2nd period, UBC made it 4-0 and were cruising. In a season of injuries across the CW, MRU played one man short.

The headline on the Sask story references that their 3rd string goaltender, Ethan Chadwick, started for the first time. He often dresses as the backup whilst Kooy and Ross alternate starts. In any event, Holy Trinity was ripped from start to finish. Combined with the Regina-Calgary series, last week’s Spartan sweep of the Banjo-Cats is hard to figure.

Two disappointing high-profile games in two nights! For the second night in a row, we had a 5-2 game and one where the Bluegars started Shane Farkas in goal and pulled him. The T-irds had slumped below .500 coming into this weekend and really needed to prove themselves. It looks like this is shaping up as another season where the five “Tier 1” teams are basically interchangeable.

The Bluegars have looked like world-beaters one weekend, and above-average (i.e., still pretty good) on others. It looks like the CW has become a two-tiered conference like last year. The Bisons could use some home-ice wins against Tier 1 teams this year. They came close two weeks ago in the opener against Sask.

The mismatch of the weekend award goes to .... this series. After being swept by Holy Trinity, the Banjo-Cats played well against Calgary last weekend. So there is a ray of hope about this one. Funny that after this weekend the Evil Monkeys will have played 8 games against Tier 2 teams, and just 4 against Tier 1 teams.

This should be the feature series of the weekend. However, last weekend the T-irds mopped up MRU in what was supposed to be that weekend’s feature series. If UBC wants a top two finish in the West division (and home ice in the quarter-finals) they need a split here, at minimum. For Bedrock U, will they finally be able to ice a full squad? They are usually two or three men short in recent weeks. It was a bit of a shock when these teams opened the season with a Dino sweep on the coast. In a scheduling quirk, this series brings UBC to the mid-way point of the season.

I admit that I had written off Holy Trinity earlier in the season. However, they did rally to sweep Regina, who had looked below-average but respectable. The Family Guys have been so-so thus far, including a respectable 1-4-1 against Tier 1 teams. This could be Holy Trinity’s last good chance to get back in the race.

Those lines for the Bluegars changed a lot throughout the game.

The Bisons got off to a slow start, at one time trailing 7-0 on the shot clock and 3-0 on the 1st period scoreboard. Once down 2-0, the Herd rallied a fair bit and it was a back-and-forth period. Clay Hanus scored with just 11 seconds left in the period to make it 3-0, on a shot Braden Holt would like back.

The 2nd period was a good one for the Bisons. Captain Hooker converted a powerplay (with his 5th of the season) to cut the lead to 3-1. After a close call at the Bluegar goal, Josh Tarzwell converted a counter-attack to make it 4-1, and my hopes were basically dashed. However, Grady Lane scored his first as a Bison on a goal-mouth scramble to make it 4-2 heading home.

Within four minutes of the 3rd period, Hayden Ostir converted a high slot shot to make it 4-3. Try as they might, the Bisons were unable to draw even. They ended the game on the PP.

There were very few penalties in this one. The Bisons were 1-for-4 on the PP, and the Bluegars were 0-for-2.

The scoreline in this game is misleading, in that the Evil Monkeys notched a pair of empty-netters at the end of the game. The Banjo-Cats are not that bad, as shown last weekend against Calgary. It really makes me wonder how they could not pick up even one win against Holy Trinity.

My anticipated feature match-up last weekend between the T-irds and Bluegars, turned into a dud, and this rematch between the T-irds and Bedrock U is following suit. These teams faced off in British California to open the season, and their rematch is also on the coast. Why? The CW schedule is a bit of a mess this year. Of note, starting Dino goaltender Carl Tetachuk was yanked in the 2nd period. On a positive note, the Dinos iced a full roster for the first time in a long time.

Thirteen goals, and only Luke Spadafora of Holy Trinity had two. The Family Guys had two empty-netter in this one, with Holy Trinity notching one with an empty net in-between. Could these teams repeat this offensive outburst?

➤ UofM: MHKY: Bisons' comeback falls short in 4-3 loss to Mount Royal (Friday late)

Quick Summary
MRU: D. Milliken (10:43 1st) , J. Lies (02:18 3rd) , R. Aquilon (14:18 3rd) , S. Moe (17:15 3rd)
Man: J. Hooker (09:44 2nd)
Goal: MRU: Sims (14 shots, 13 saves), Man: Thornton (54 shots, 50 saves)

First, the line-ups were the same as for Friday night, except that both sides started their Friday back-up goaltender. The Bisons also switched Caden Zaplitny from wing to centering Michael King’s line, with King going the other way.

The game started like Friday’s games, with the Bluegars carrying the play but the Bisons hanging in there. Mid-way through the 2nd period, Captain Hooker scored on the PP (his 6th), to tie the game. A few shifts later it appeared that the Bisons were getting the lead. Michael King put one through Riley Sims’ 5-hole, but Bluegar defender Leith Olafson reached across to deflect the puck away before it could cross the line. That was your TSN Turning Point.

The Bisons were dreadful in the 3rd period, being outshot 22-3 and outscored 3-0. MRU’s go-ahead goal was a PP on a chintzy call, but that happens. (Each teams 1-for-3 on the PP, BTW.)

This puts the Bisons half-way through their toughest stretch of the season, of 8 consecutive games against Tier 1 opposition. They have just 1 point in the first four games. They need more points from the next four games.

The T-irds were sub-.500 not so long ago, but back-to-back sweeps of the Bluegars and Bedrock U has them back in the hunt for 1st place. Their goaltender, Cole Schwebius, faced just 34 shots over two games. The Bisons are off to Bedrock U next weekend.

The Bisons are now half-way through their toughest stretch of the season, where they have 8 straight games against Tier 1 opponents. They had one point against Sask, and none against MRU. Now they have consecutive road series, this weekend in the Town of Bedrock, and next weekend in British California against the red-hot T-irds. They need to get something out of these series.

The Dinos have had problems icing a full roster. It looks like they have now healed. Will former Dino Riley Stotts be able to burn his former team?

In a scheduling note, the Bisons have added a holiday away game, at the Minnesota State Mavericks on December 30th. That follows a game on December 29th against the Omaha Mavericks, and precedes a game on January 3rd at Bemidji State and January 4th at North Dakota.

The Evil Monkeys swept the Banjo Mutts earlier. Can they do it again? The Monkeys have played just four games against Tier 1 opponents. I suspect that their ranking will slip with more GPS. Both sides put together a good broadcast, so this should be worth a watch.

November 22, 2024: BISONS SUNK BY SHORTHANDED GOALS

Quick Summary
Man: C. Zaplitny (15:00 1st)
Calg: S. Strange (05:58 2nd) , J. Gricius (11:43 2nd) , D. Melin (15:04 2nd) , C. Gengenbach (04:51 3rd)
Goal: Man: Holt (37 shots, 33 saves), Calg: Tetachuk (22 shots, 21 saves)

There was quite an ebb-and-flow to this game. In the end, the Dinos had a Yabba Dabba Doo time.

In the 1st period, the Bedrock Boys started strong for about 12 minutes, then it went back-and-forth until Caden Zaplitny scored his 2nd of the season to give the Bisons the lead. This even though period shots wound up 14-3 in favour of the Dinos.

Oh, but that 2nd period. It was a combination of bad luck and bad management for the Bisons. They outshot the Dinos 16-7 and carried the play roughly in accordance with that stat. This allowed them to generate powerplay time. However, on those powerplays the Dinos outscored the Bisons 2-0. Those two goals bracketed another Dino goal, all of which came from ridiculous give-aways by the Bisons. On the game tying goal, Braden Holt left his crease in pursuit of a Dino forward and was badly burned as the net was left empty. This period left the Bisons a page right out of history.

Sadly, the Bisons seemed to surrender in the 3rd period. Shots were 16-3 for the Dinos. Were they saving themselves for Saturday’s rematch? One can dream, I guess.

Goal: Sask: Ross (30 shots, 27 saves), Alta: Kruger (22 shots, 20 saves)

Since all four games on Friday night were held in Saudi Alberta, it was hard to see multiple games. I did manage to see the very ending of this one. The Evil Monkeys can sure score. This win makes them 3-0 against the Banjo-Mutts this season thus far.

MacU: L. Hughes (15:11 1st) , S. Comrie (17:33 1st) , V. Scott (16:08 3rd) , S. McLean (19:35 3rd)
Goal: Reg: Evanoff (27 shots, 24 saves), MacU: Epp (28 shots, 26 saves)

This was a fairly even game all night. The Family Guys broke a 2-2 tie in the last 4 minutes before putting it away with an empty-netter. MacU went 2-for-6 on the PP, and the Banjo-Cats were 0-for-3, and that was the difference. This pretty much buries the Kittens’ hopes for a playoff berth. They trail Mac by 13 points now.

Holy Trinity was kept alive in this game by the powerplay, going 2-for-9. Meanwhile, they took just two minors, one for delay of game. Nevertheless, the Bluegars get the two points they need and Trinity moves even further away from the playoffs, now 10 points out.

After my Saturday shopping run-around I fell asleep and got up when this game was 3-1 for the Dinos. I was just in time to see the Dinos score twice within a minute, after which the white flag was flying.

The Bisons are off to British California for the only time this season, to face the T-irds. Their only series against Holy Trinity will be at home.

UBC had a sparse pre-season, with two wins against each of Simple Simon Fraser’s Globetrotters and Holy Trinity. They sputtered out of the gate, not surpassing the .500 mark until November 8th. They are coming off sweeps of MRU (5-2 and 5-2) and Calgary (5-1 and 3-0), followed by a bye week. It could be said that they have been playing better than anybody over their last four games.

Meanwhile, the Bisons are ending their most difficult stretch of the season, having played Saskatchewan, Mount Royal, and Calgary in the last three weekends. They are 0-5-1 in that stretch.

The linked preview story offers this assessment by T-ird coach Sven Butenschon:
"They've added a strong recruiting class, strong WHL players," said Butenschon of the Bisons. "They added a veteran in Riley Stotts who transferred from Calgary who's a prolific All-Star in our league. Great goaltender in (Braden) Holt who had a great WHL career. It looks like they're still trying to find their rhythm and maybe they're underachieving a little bit this year but hopefully it doesn't happen against us when they figure it out."

For players to watch, UBC has two Top 20 scorers in Sasha Mutala (14 GP, 4 G, 12 A, 16 P) and Sam Huo (13 GP, 6 G, 7 A, 13 P). The Bisons’ top two centres are hovering at or near the PPG level, with Jonny Hooker (12 GP, 6 G, 6 A, 12 P) and Riley Stotts (12 GP, 3 G, 8 A, 11 P). The issue for the Bisons here is whether their overwhelmed defence can find sufficient form to hold off the UBC forwards.

The Banjo-Mutts have hit their stride and would be a tough opponent for anybody. The Family Guys have more-or-less established themselves as a middle-of-the-road USports program. MacEwan are 5-0-1 against Regina and Holy Trinity so far, which gives their overall standing a big boost. Otherwise, they have a 5-1 win over UBC and a shootout win over Manitoba. Any points they can get here would be a bonus.

Technically, this game is part of Holy Trinity’s playoff race. They are presently 12 points behind both UBC and the Bedrock Dinos. I have to think that the Dinos are looking at this as a must sweep weekend.

This should be the feature series of the weekend. It is a home-and-home schedule. Also, it is the only series of the season between these teams. After struggling in the pre-season, the Evil Monkeys have regained their usual form and can score by the bushel. They have 69 goals to lead the CW, followed by MRU, UBC, and Sask all tied for 2nd with 55. Incidentally, the top five teams are all very close in the GA category, Calgary leading with 32, Alberta and Sask with 35, and MRU and UBC with 36.
