Corruption jumps to top of the list among voters' concerns

Sep 06, 2018 9:23pm EDT by Kerry Eleveld

Here's the real Trump effect: A new Kaiser tracking poll finds that voters view "corruption in Washington" as the "most important issue" in the upcoming midterm election, with 30 percent putting it at the top of their list. Health care came in second at 27 percent, and the economy/jobs took third at 25 percent.

When combining "most important" with "very important," health care is still the primary issue voters are concerned about at 81 percent, with corruption taking a close second at 77 percent.

Interestingly, this is the first time Kaiser included corruption in its list of possible issues. The poll was conducted in the days following Michael Cohen's guilty plea and the criminal conviction of former Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort.

In terms of partisan breakdown:

corruption topped the list for independents; health care was their second concernhealth care topped the list for Democrats; corruption came in secondeconomy/jobs topped the list for Republicans; immigration was their No. 2 issue

If congressional elections were held today, 61 percent of women in small cities and suburban areas say they would vote for a Democrat compared to 26 percent who say they would vote for a Republican, according to a new NPR/Marist poll released Wednesday.

Among all suburban voters, 56 percent said they would vote for a Democrat compared to 34 percent who said they would vote for a Republican.

The poll is a startling swing from the 2016 election, when 49 percent of suburban voters voted for President Trump and 45 percent voted for former Secretary of State and Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.
