With 6 minutes left they and a 30-0 lead they still had all the first stringers on offense, and they were using 100% effort to get another touchdown.

The Ti-Cats had already given up. Teams don't forget when the opponent is working to embarrass them. Just sayin, what goes around comes around.

Hmmmn.......I think the Cats had given up a bit before that.

This has come to a matter of you see it one way and I, another. If, indeed, it played out the way you saw it, the Riders would not be the first, nor the last team, to be at the top of their game and playing hard till the final whistle. They were on a roll, having fun and giving their fans a game to remember - something every team in the CFL aspires to do.

'Working to embarrass the Cats'? They took care of that themselves and that is not easy for me to say as they are my favorite team in the East - have been for years. Watching Kent roundly chew Hank out on the side-lines - that was embarrassing.

It was the kind of game where some watchers may have changed the channel early in the first half in search of something with a bit more life - unless like me they are a die-hard fan rewarded for their patience with a heck of a finish. It was also a game where I finally heard Montreal fans in full-throated roar - they were even able to force an procedure penalty against the Esks - shades of the Rider Nation - go Al fans!

Montreal got off to a decent start leading 10 to 3 at the end of the quarter. They did well to have that many points as there were so many miscues and missed plays on both sides of the ball.

Kavis Reed pulled Mike Reilly and started back-up Jonathan Crompton in the second – a move that had the panel in high dungeon at half-time. Crompton promptly gave one up to Montreal’s Shea Emery and the Al’s put up 3 on the TO.

The Eskimos got a huge boost early in the 3rd when Kary Koch took the ball on a punt all the way to the end zone. The Eskimos’ fortunes were looking up.

Brandon Whittaker got his running game going late in the 3rd taking the team down to the 20 where they were forced to settle for another Sean Whyte FG. Whyte would add another 3 early in the 4th when the Eskimo D once again prevented an Al’s major.

Then came one of the pivotal moments in the game. Shea Emery was charged with roughing the passer – a penalty of 15 yards plus any gained on the play. Mike Reilly rushed for 20 then tossed the pass to Calvin McCarty who carried the ball over for a TD on the next play. Once again the Esks still stood a chance.

Not two minutes later, the Esks recovered a Montreal fumble at the 24 yard line. On the next play, Mike Reilly found Kary Koch in the end zone and just like that the Eskimos took the lead for the first time in the game.

Montreal was held to 2 and out in spite of a roughing the passer call that saw them with favorable field position. Then things started to get interesting.

Sean Whyte’s kick appeared to land in the end zone for a single and that was the initial judgement of the line ref. However, that ruling was changed to state that the ball actually went out at the 2. That ruling was then challenged by Kavis Reed –who lost not only the challenge but his last time out – costly that as we shall see later.

The Esks were held to 2 and out and things got interesting again as Grant Shaw, instead of conceding the 2 points, kicked the ball out much to the chagrin of Kavis who, replay showed, was seen signally frantically on the side lines for Grant to take a knee.

Montreal couldn’t deliver the full goods on this chance either but went ahead by 2 pts on yet another Whyte FG – and I’m sure the Esks breathed a sigh of relief.

The Esks blew their next turn at the ball and Montreal’s Brandon Whittaker came to the fore taking the team down to the 2 yard line where again things got interesting as the Al’s coach sent in their 3rd string QB Tanner Marsh in place of Calvillo on 3rd and goal. The Edmonton defence stopped Whittaker cold – he was also taken to the locker room after the play with what looked like a shoulder injury. Out goes Marsh, in comes Tony who deliberately drew a procedure penalty in order to move the ball to the 8 yard line for Whyte’s final FG of the game and a 5-point lead for Montreal.

The Eskimos took over the ball at their own 35 yard line and in a series of brilliant plays moved it all the way down to the 2 yard line with only seconds remaining on the clock. They were unsuccessful on their first attempt over the goal and were left with only 9 seconds and this is where that time out might have made a difference. As it was Reilly had no choice but a quick huddle, took too long to throw the pass and it was game over.

I would not characterize this one as a great win by the Als but it was a win that was much needed and they will take what they can. They did some good things in this game but their opponents gave them way too many chances.

Kavis Reed’s decision to sit Mike Reilly for a few plays seemed to work out in the end as when Mike did come back as pivot, he was much more effective and he started to use his legs more.

This one could easily have gone the other way.

32 to 27 Montreal

I'm still cheering for the Ottawa Roughriders and Russ Jackson. It always killed me that there were nine teams in the league and two had the same name.

Never made any sense to me either, Walter as Ottawa always had first dibs on the name. Ah well, they chose their former nick-name for the new team and we will finally see them hit the gridiron next year - can hardly wait to have another team in the CFL. Truly hope the Ottawa fans get behind the team and support them.

Russ Jackson was the first and IMHO, the best Canadian QB we ever had in the league. He was a gentleman both on and off the field and dominated the league during the 60s. He led by example and that example was always something worth striving for - I miss him too.

Welcome to the Big Time Bo Levi Mitchell! Young Gun, indeed......more like vet presence in a young body. Bo played like a seasoned pivot after getting off to a slow start early in the game. He finished the night with 29 of 33 for 376 yards and 3 TDs. Rene Paredes would meet then exceed Paul McCallum's previous record of 30 consecutive FGs, kicking 5 on the night for a total of 34 - Rene Rocks.

Former Sk Husky player Jade Etienne would score his first 2 CFL TDs on strikes from Justin Goltz. Another former Husky, Rory Kohlert would be instrumental in setting up both majors. The Bombers would add one more TD late in the game as Chad Simpson was able to take one over for the team.

Anthony Parker, Marquis McDaniel and Greg Carr - first time in a Stamp uniform - would put the majors on the board for Calgary. Rene Paredes would add the remaining points in the win.

Justin Goltz was good for 19 of 34 for 194 yards, 2 TDs and an interception - Justin needs to practice his accuracy.

The Stamps would take this one 37 to 24 for their 4th win of the season while the hapless Bombers fell to 1 and 4.

I'm sure that other Rider fans had for a hmmn moment when they heard that Drew Willy was starting for Darian who is out with his recurring foot injury. We were away from home. The Ti-Cats HAD to have improved over last week and had fan support - though there seemed to be the usual contingent of Rider fans present. They had Dave Stala back and Brandon Issac had joined the D. Surely they would be more of a challenge this time around.

Geroy Simon got his first TD as a Rider and went over 100 on the night. Anymore questions about Mr Simon? No........thought not.

John Chick would get his first sack back in Rider uniform and would be a monster on the D-line all night

Drew Willy would end the night with 14 of 25 for 269 yards, 3 TDs and 0 interceptions. I guess that answers our back-up QB questions.

Tearrius George would account for 2 sacks on the night.

Rey Williams would stop Ham at the goal line with a little help from his buds and on the next attempt Craig Butler would hold Hank short of the goal line forcing another Ham TO.

Kory Sheets ran for 100+ yards for this 5th consecutive game and he is over 700 yards on the season.

The Sask O-line provided Drew with the same protection they afford Darian and once he got his nerves settled down, he was focused and showed great pocket presence.

Chris Getzlaf, Weston Dressler and Geroy would put majors on the board.

The D-line seems to take a quarter or two to figure out the opposition's offense but they do figure it out. Hank was hurried, rushed, under pressure and sacked more than once tonight.

Chris Milo put 3 through the uprights for 9 Sask points.

Special Teams continue to shine, kudos to Ricky Schmitt who had a 60-yard boot, and Saunders consistently gets Sask good field position on punt returns.

All in all, I'd say we're looking pretty good.

Oh and one last word.........does it always rain in Guelph? Apparently, it rained so hard it cut the TSN feed just as the 4th got underway. It wasn't until 9:10 in the game that we finally got the game back.

I am watching a replay of the game on TSN2 so I can see the part I missed.

Willy was hot. WTG Riders!

Not bad, eh. Nice to know we him in our back pocket. He got a little ahead of himself a couple of times but settled right back down and started making the right decisions. Also nice to see him fit in so comfortably w/ the O-line and having the support of his receivers either by making the catches or throwing great blocks. Shows me the guys believe in him and that means only good things for the team.

Yeah, folks in the chat room I was in were also wondering what was going on and why the announcers said nothing.

I also heard that Ricky Ray is scheduled to play next week. Well, that's good news!

It's great news for the Argos, gopher.....but Chad Kackert is still out and he's the guy that gets their ground game going. Will be kind of strange watching a CFL game on Tuesday of all days.

Oh not too worry, talloola..........being a Rider fan, I am all too aware of the need to take it a game at a time........which is what I am doing. Doesn't stop from being really happy that they are doing pretty well so far. Looking forward to seeing how the Lions do against the Argos on Tuesday. Hope it's a great game.

Yeah, folks in the chat room I was in were also wondering what was going on and why the announcers said nothing.

The screen went blank and that is the way it stayed for several minutes until the TSN logo came up for awhile. Then the panel came on and announced that the feed was cut due to the weather. Almost half of the quarter was gone before feed was finally restored. Missed the great goal line stance by the Riders that saw Ham turn the ball over on 3rd D. Also missed Geroy's great catch to get the Riders out of the shadow of their goal posts after the TO.

Even though I stayed up to watch the replay on TSN2, they announced that they had cut part of the game to fit it in the time slot .................so I still didn't get to see the part I missed............Sheesh.

Oops...........seems we got ahead or ourselves, gopher............the Argo's just released a statement that Zach Collaros will be starting for the team as Rickie is still not cleared for play. Seems that this has been the week for back-ups to get some reps on the field.

This has been an interesting week in terms of back-up QBs in our league. So far, we have been treated to three new starters and tonight we get a chance to see the fourth. Zach comes with some good creds which he will need as he faces the Lion's defensive line tonight - they are tough on seasoned QBs.

The West is reigning supreme over the East so far this season - heads above in every category. Hope the Argos get some life tonight and give the Lions a good solid 60 minutes of hard fought football.

Really like the addition of Coach's Playbook to the pre-game show. Paul is interviewing the CFL head refree right now and they are going over pass interference calls complete with video review - just one of the reasons I never miss Paul's segment. He also does great play by play breakdowns of all the positions on the field.

Well off to watch the game. Have a feeling that BC will come out on top in this one..........but will be cheering for the Argos - cause they will need all the support they can get.

BC-Toronto 12-31 with 2 minutes to go ...

Argos got lots of points on turnovers

38 - 12 final, gopher.........so much for me thinking they might needed my support. LOL!

Righteous game by the Argos. BC tuned the ball over a total of 5 times in the game.

I hope in future some of those rookies go easy on the old men on defense.

TSN on-field game caller, Chris Cuthbert made a remark at half-time to the effect that Marcel Desjardins the Ottawa RedBlacks GM must be salivating right now. For those not in the know, that was a reference to the fact that Ottawa has first dibs in the coming CFL draft. According to the rules governing the draft, every CFL team is allowed to protect only one QB - which leaves most back-ups eligible. After watching the performance of four new starters this week, I would say the only reason he may have a tough decision is that they are all worthy of consideration.

Duanne Ford figured that Adam Bighill will have nightmares about Zach Collaros so deftly did the TO pivot evade the BC tackle. Whether it was evading tackles, running for yards or downs, finding his receivers with great accuracy, Zach seemed to have an answer to whatever the BC defence had in store for him. He committed one fumble but in his defence it was the newcomer Curtis Steele who knocked it out of his hands. Never-the-less it led to a Lion recovery and marked the only Argo TO in the game. Zach would finish the night - 21 of 25 for 253 yards, 3 TDs, 0 interceptions and 28 rushing yards.

Curtis Steele, replacing Chad Kackert, would go overboard in redeeming himself as he led the Argos downfield rushing for 74 yards on 12 touches and 2 late half TDs - the last a flying leap over the entire BC defensive line. Jason Barnes leaped up between two BC defenders in the end zone to bring down his TD. Alexander Robinson and John Chiles scored the other two Argo TDs.

The Argo offence was able to stop every single drive for a major mounted by BC who had little trouble moving the ball downfield by were stopped short of their goal on every attempt. BCs time of possession was much higher than TOs but that did not reflect the numbers on the scoreboard.

Meanwhile, the #1-ranked defence in the CFL was unable to do the same to the Argo offence.
Travis was 20 of 30 for 226 0 TDs and 1 interception.

Paul moved into 4th postion on all-time CFL scoring list for his four completions - the only points the Lions would score on the night.

Lack of discipline didn't help BC's cause. Just before half-time, after the play had been called both teams were assessed unnecessary roughness penalties at 15 yards a piece. The difference was that TO drew one whereas BC drew 3 - 30 yard gain for the Argos on just that penalty alone.

38 to 12 Argo win and they improve their record to 3 and 2 and remain top spot in the East.
