This should answer questions about player eligibility and cut-off for team spots.

Player Entry Procedure

  • The teams submit the names of the participating players at the first Championship Directorate.
  • The maximum number of players allowed on a Team Registration Form at the beginning of the World Championship is 22 skaters and 3 goalies. The minimum is 15 skaters and 2 goalies.
  • At the first Directorate meeting, the teams must name at least the minimum number of 15 skaters and 2 goalkeepers. The players entered must be present at the championship venue by the time of the Directorate meeting.
  • The remaining players up to the allowed maximum of 22 + 3 must be submitted for players' control two hours before any of the following championship games. Players can added throughout the tournament until the roster is full.
  • During a game, a team may enter (dress) 20 skaters and 2 goalkeepers on the Official Game Sheet, with the emergency goalkeeper standing by if a goalie entered to the Official Game Sheet is unable to play.

IIHF Eligibility

To play in the IIHF World Championship, the Olympic ice hockey tournament and the qualifications to these competitions, players must fulfill the following qualification requirements:

  • Each player must be under the jurisdiction of an IIHF member national association.
  • Each player must be a citizen of the country he represents.

Acquiring a new national eligibility (The ‘two-year’ case)

When a player has changed his citizenship or has acquired another citizenship and wants to participate for the first time in an IIHF competition representing his new country he must:

  • Prove that he has participated for at least two consecutive years in the national competitions of his new country during which period he has neither transferred to another country nor played ice hockey within any other country.
  • Have an international transfer card (ITC) that shows the transfer to the national competition of his new country and which was approved and dated at least two years before the start of the IIHF competition in which he wishes to participate.

Change of national eligibility (The ‘four-year’ case)

A player, who has previously participated in IIHF competition, can switch national eligibility (but only once in a player's life) if:

  • He is a citizen of the new country of his choice
  • He has participated for at least four consecutive years in the national competitions of his new country, during which period he has neither transferred to another country nor played ice hockey within any other country and has not played for his previous country in an IIHF competition during this four year period.
  • He has an international transfer card (ITC) that shows the transfer to the national competition of his new country and which was approved and dated at least four years before the start of the IIHF competition in which he wishes to participate.

Canada wants back to top

Ranking at #5, without gold since 2007

04-05-12

HELSINKI – Coach Brent Sutter had incredible success with Canada’s U20 program, but can he translate that to success at the senior level in a way that betters his results with the Calgary Flames? This Team Canada is the perfect opportunity for him in that it is an international event and many of the players are young – and good, very good, in fact.

Canada doesn’t like to go five years without winning gold, but there is even more at stake this year. Canada has won medals at the U18, U20, and both women’s events this season, so a top-three placing in Helsinki will mean five medals in five events, a rare accomplishment. This team is as young as skilled as any of recent years, but it doesn’t have that obvious choice of team leader and captain as it has with players such as Rick Nash or Ryan Smyth (apologies to Jay Bouwmeester, Corey Perry, or Ryan Getzlaf, any of whom might well wear the “C”).

Cam Ward is the de facto number-one goalie based on his NHL reputation with Carolina and his previous success with Canada. He’ll be backed up by Devan Dudnyk, who had the same role last year behind James Reimer and Jonathan Bernier. Ward has all it takes to take the team to gold, having been in goal in 2007 for Canada’s most recent victory.

Goal

Defence

The defence has a little bit of everything. In Bouwmeester the team has a player whose Team Canada career goes back to his debut at the U20 as a 16-year-old in 2000. In Luke Schenn and Dion Phaneuf it has a pair of teammates from Toronto who play a tough game inside their own blue line. With the loss of P.K. Subban to a knee injury, Canada has summoned junior star Ryan Murray, who will likely see limited time as an 18-year-old with no experience at the senior level. In Duncan Keith, a star who won Olympic gold and the Stanley Cup in 2010.

Forward

Fans will not want to miss this exciting group of forwards that represents a who’s who of recent top draft choices. John Tavares had an incredible season with the lowly New York Islanders and became a top-ten scorer, while 18-year-old Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, the first overall draft choice by Edmonton last year, is a finalist for the Calder Trophy. Jeff Skinner is still only 19 and starting his second World Championship, while Jordan Eberle, a hero for Canada in U20 play and another bright star in the NHL, is also here. These are all fast and skilled players capable of scoring.

Add to the mix two veteran players with tons of success for Canada in Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf, both of whom are creative and create scoring chances. Ryan O’Reilly is another young star who has been getting better and better during the early years of what could be a long career, and the returning Winnipeg Jets have contributed a young guy and an oldster in Evander Kane and Jets captain Andrew Ladd.

Prediction

Always in the thick of it, there’s no reason to think Canada can’t win a medal. Given Sutter’s expertise behind the bench and the enormous amount of skill on the team, the only way Canada could do poorly is a lack of execution. The other top teams have fine rosters as well, but Canada’s has all the makings of a true success story in Helsinki.

U.S. opener: French toast

Americans beat France 7-2 in first World Championship game

04-05-12

HELSINKI – Team USA gets off to a good start in the 2012 World Championship. Kyle Okposo scored two, Max Pacioretty scored one and picked up two assists, Alex Goligoski had two points in the 7-2 win over France.

"The score didn’t really indicate the game. I think they could have had a lot more goals and we could have come up with a few less. It was closer than people might realize," says Team USA forward Bobby Ryan who also scored once against France.

France and the U.S. had played each other seven times previously and only once had France managed to beat the Americans. It was exactly 14 years ago, on May 4, at the World Championship in Switzerland and the score was 3-2.

Since then, the U.S. had four straight wins, including last year’s 3-2 win in Kosice, Slovakia.
"It’s important not to take anybody lightly. When it gets to this level, everyone’s pretty close," said Team USA goaltender Jimmy Howard.

The US had a game plan, and they stuck to it. Today, the streak is five games long.

But it was France who took drew first blood when Yohann Auvitu and team captain Laurent Meunier opened up the U.S. defence, before Meunier dropped the puck back to Nicolas Besch who beat Jimmy Howard with a wrist shot from the slot at 12:17.

"It was a little bit of nerves out there. It’s been a little while since I played for Team USA, so I was a little bit nervous in the first and second but I felt a lot better in the third," Howard said.

It was exactly the kind of start France had wanted to get. Unfortunately for them, Alex Goligoski’s pass hit Kyle Okposo’s tape on the red line, and the French defensemen let Okposo on a breakaway. He faked a shot, then moved the puck to his backhand and beat Cristobal Huet just four-and-a-half minutes after the French goal.

In the second period, France got into penalty trouble which cost them the game. Team USA had three power-play opportunities in the first nine minutes of the period, and they scored twice.
First, captain Jack Johnson beat Huet with a seeing-eye slapshot from the point 3:56 into the period, and then five minutes later, at 9:15, Bobby Ryan redirected Max Pacioretty’s pass from the corner from right under Huet’s nose.

France got back into the game a U.S. penalty. They failed to score on their power play, but just 17 seconds after Kyle Palmieri had returned to the ice, Pierre-Edouard Bellemare somehow got the puck through a scrum in front of the net, and Howard, and made it a one-goal game again.

With just 21.5 seconds remaining on the game, though Huet got beat for the fourth time when Pacioretty deflected Golgoski’s slapshot from the point through his five-hole. Paul Stastny picked up an assist thanks to a clean win in the faceoff circle.

The U.S. crushed the French dreams in the third period, scoring their fifth of the game after a neutral zone turnover sent Palmieri and Jim Slater on a 2-on-1 attack, and Slater one-timed Palmieri’s perfect pass into the net for 5-2.

Okposo got his second of the game with 8:59 remaining when he beat Huet on the shortside with a quick wrist shot from the bottom of the faceoff circle to make it 6-2.
The Americans scored their third power-play goal with a little over two minutes remaining in the game, when Jeff Petry's slapshot snuck through Huet's five-hole to seal the final score, 7-2. Pacioretty and Stastny was credited with assists, third point of the game for Pacioretty, and second for Stastny.

For France, playing the game at noon was perfect preparation for their game against Kazakhstan, on Sunday, also at noon.

"We had tried to adjust to that, we had a lot of skates at that time, and I felt good playing at noon," said Amar.

“Our key game is against Kazakhstan, our next game, but regardless whether we win or lose that one, the tournament’s not over,” he added.

For the Americans, the game against France served as good preparation to the rest of the tournament.
"It’s better for us to take it one step at a time. We got a feel for the big ice in Sweden, and a lot of guys felt uncomfortable with it and the extra width, so it was important that we get a game under our belt in a different situation like this," said Ryan.

Team USA’s next game is against Canada, tomorrow night.

ARGHHHH. Ah jeez, I'm sorry guys, I had hoped that the links in the article I posted from IIHF would be the ticket. What a disappointment. :-( Just so you know, I am on dial-up and cannot watch any of the vids posted in the forum...........I would be sitting here until the wee hours waiting for the download or get half way through and have it time-out. Thanks though,

Almost time for puck drop at the World's and word has come out that Alex Burrows, after suffering an upper body injury in the game against Slovakia yesterday, is feeling much better and more than likely will be back for the next game. Speedy recovery Alex.

GO, CANADA, GO! :canada:

We were outplayed, talloola...........the US deserves this win and Congrats to them for it. At least we came away with a point. The team needs to gel more, they are shaky on too many plays - lots of superstars but we need more simple stars playing together, IMHO.

John Tavares has to put this behind himself and carry on, he's been solid so far and he can be even better. Congrats to the team for the point but pull together guys.

Canada's next game is with France on May 7th as the team has tomorrow off - good opportunity for the team to get more ice time together in practice - Practice Hard Guys!

Yeah, it was guttsy for canada to even keep this game close, shows how players can dig down and get that
big goal when its needed, BUT yes, u.s. played better.
The big ice suits some and not others.

I actually was concerned about burrows playing that big ice, his skating isn't the greatest, and he
would have to work very hard to keep up with the 'top' skaters in this tournament.

His game is great, but just as they said in intermission, it doesn't take much to have a skater get
away from another on that ice, there is so much room, and Burrows isn't real good at changing direction
a lot, smoothly, he has to work harder than skaters who are very fluid and quick.

I didn't want to see his skating get exposed in this tournament, as he can be very successful on the small
ice, and be a top player, 'both' ways.
I don't know if he has 'ever' played on the big ice before.

This team will be a lot stronger. They were better in the third period than they were in the first.

I was glad to see Burrows come back after we thought he had been injured.

Another funny thing was that I don't think I had heard of most of the American players before.

I don't think it has been confirmed that burrow's will be back for next game, they said he is
much better, so I hope so.

As the years go by the u.s. players are getting better and better, and hockey is catching up
big time, lots of minor hockey in the u.s. now, even california have a very good minor hockey program,
(thank wayne gretzky for that), and with over 300 million population, there will come a time where
they will pass canada by, just because of numbers, won't be in our lifetimes though.

I wouldn't worry so much Tall. Hockey is very popular in the North East and Great Lakes states but that is about it.

for now, I don't think most people realize how fast it is growing, and that is good for the game, not bad.

nesn, the hockey sports network has a very good sports broadcast now, apparantly this year it is quite
impressive how well they are doing, and how good the station is, so that will help get the message out, and create more new kids playing hockey in the u.s.

not just the northeast any more, it has spread quite a distance now.

Canada is playing France this morning. They are up 5 to 2 at the end of the 2nd period. TSN showed a vid of Jeff Skinner winning a Bronze medal for figure skating when just a youngster (though he is only what 19 now) - seems some of those skills are helping him on the ice to this day. Apparently, Patrick Chan is a big fan of Jeff's too.

The US will play Slovakia later today and will be looking to stay unbeaten so far in the tourney.

As you no doubt already know Mowich, Canada won over France by the same score as the U.S. did. I think Canada
could have won by a much bigger score but maybe we are seeing some hockey diplomacy here.
I think the U.S. will have a harder time with Slovakia than we did..........but who knows.

I didn't hear either but I did hear that Canada beat France by the same 7 - 2 score the U.S. beat them by. I also read that the U.S. was beaten by Slovakia...That kind of evens things out.
