I knew the US was outplaying Canada when my daughter said, "it's like they're playing monkey in the middle, and Canada is the monkey."

Epic game by Sinclair. Too bad it didn't come with a win.

Kreskin,

Thanx for the link.

As for today's match, the referee made a major error - when she allowed a PK for intentional handball in the penalty area, she should have handed a red card and disqualification to the defender. This means Canada should have played with only 10 players and the game would never have gone into overtime.

there definitely is a lot of complaints about officiating, canada figures she made a number of bad calls.

I have no comment, didn't see much of the game, but did see the call made on the goal kick, where the

ball hit the canadian players hand/arm.

anyway too late now, they just have to move on and try for the bronze medal.

That brings me to mu frustration with football today. This idiotic card business leads to the ruin of many games, even of international games. It used to be rare that a player was sent off. Only when, in the judgement of the referee, there was a deliberate attempt to injure, basically. Cars make offenses even in proportion be they mildly naughty or evil.

It used to be a tough game but there was never the tackling across the ball that risks injury scores of times in every game now.

I recall a game a few years ago, an international match, where the goalkeeper was sent off for handling the ball outside the area. What possible rationale can there be for such a rule. And intentional handball resulted in a penalty not a sending off or card of some colour.

The game is a poor imitation of what it was forty or fifty years ago.

Would you like some cheese GoreO? lol

You mean those girls all have yeast infections? They played well, considering how uncomfortable that would be.

Sure, the ref missed some calls, but it was a good game. US outplayed Canada, but were only able to go ahead at the very end. Far closer game than anyone predicted.

It happens. In high school my soccer team in a pivotal end of the year match had to play the first ranked team in the other division in our bracket due to questionable loss, a non-call on a purposeful hand ball inside the 18 yard box on a corner kick in the final 5 minutes. The ball was going in the back of the net and the back on the near-post stuck his arm out. We needed the win to finish first, and ended up with a tie. Tough way to lose a game, but it happens. The call didn't give the US the match, it gave them the opportunity to win, which they did fair and square.

ETA: The Canadian women still have a match to play for a medal. Time to re-group and finish strong. GO CANADA!

First, I do congratulate the U.S. on their win - controversy or not. However, it is interesting to note that after the game Wombach admitted she subtly lobbied the ref for the call by counting out loud. Also, the ref was seen to high five one of the U.S. players then rub her finger and thumb together after the call - wonder what that was all about???

Would have been nice to see a yellow card come out as is normally done in such circumstances but it is water under the bridge now and the fact that our ladies played as well as they did is a credit to them and their coach. I will be cheering for Japan in the Gold medal game. Sour grapes maybe............but this really has left a very bad taste in my mouth.
