The reffing in the Hamilton-Montreal game was joke near the end. Three plays in a row blown by the refs. First, Hamilton throws a touchdown pass but is ruled incomplete, and since they don't have a challenge flag to throw the blown call stands. The next play the left Montreal defensive end is clearly in the neutral zone before the snap. It's not called. During the play there is a pic and Montreal gets possession. On the next play a Hamilton defensive back is called for interference when in fact the Montreal receiver ran right over him.

A couple of weeks ago a line judge was fired for a bad call. The whole crew in this game should be let go for that series of bad calls.

I watched the same game and am in complete agreement. Unfortunately, the CFL has a history of bad calls that goes back decades. The best that can be hoped for is that over the course of the season the calls will even out. The challenge rule has also helped correct many of the errors, but it would be nice if the CFL would make a real effort to improve the quality of its officials; perhaps beginning with paying them a bit more to encourage improvement.

Outstanding performance by the Ti-Cats against the Lions last night. Hamilton never gave up and their defense was absolutely stellar. It was great to see that both Kevin and Quentin were able to perform well when given the go ahead. Expected a pretty good game but didn't think that BC would be bowled over by Hamilton.

Final score: BC 10 - Hamilton 42

Also must add my congrats to Geroy for surpassing Allen Pitts record of most receiving yards. Geroy now has a solid chance of surpassing Milt Stegall's record too. Rock on Geroy!

Fire Wally!!

Ha, ha, ha! Nice one Kreskin............one loss after so many wins does not automatically make Wally a bad coach. Give some credit to the Ti-Cats - they played to win and did so in fine fashion.

I think it would have been a much different story had Eliminium been healthy and ready to play - the guy is one-man wrecking crew and is sorely missed on the BC defense.

Ya, and their offense is looking a little lame these days. Other teams have a book on Lulay now. He'll need to grow once again to take it to another level to be successful.

Well at least he didn't throw any interceptions on the day - not like the very unusual performance of Anthony Calvillo.

Will wait to see how BC plays against the Eskimos next Saturday before I make any judgements about the Lions.

On another note, the CFL is celebrating Breast Cancer month as evidenced by all the pink accoutrements worn by the teams, refs and fans. I applaud the CFL for their support of this very worthy cause. That said, I wonder if the CFL will get behind prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is said to affect one in six men and would, IMHO, be a most worthy cause to champion - and maybe just a bit more apropos. Just saying.

Byron Parker of the Argo's set a CFL record for the highest number of interceptions resulting in TDs, last night - and it was a beauty - classic Byron Parker and many, many congratulations to him. Well done Byron.

Byron's record was set during the Argo game against the Blue Bombers last night in what would be the last game played in Canad Inns Stadium in Winnipeg. It was anything but what many had expected.

The game and what happened on the field will be the talk of the CFL for a while to come. Firstly, they will be talking about the possible fine coming to Argo player, Johnny Sears, for his vicious and highly illegal helmet-to-helmet hit on Steven Jyles who was already down on the field. Steven was forced to leave the game and was eventually taken to the dressing room. He will be undergoing customary checks and tests for concussion as he was unconscious on the field for a short time. There is absolutely no doubt what-so-ever that Sears targeted Jyles’ helmet – as the numerous replays were quick to show. The league must act quickly on what they will do to Sears who also got into a skirmish with Argo's Jason Pottinger - both were sent from the game.

Secondly, the reffing............or what passed for it. Whatever happened between the refs in the 4th quarter needs explaining. It seemed to me, as it did to TSN commentators that due to mixed calls by the refs, the teams were robbed of several minutes of play time. It appeared to be about whistles that were or were not blown but the officials were not talking. Whatever happened it had teams and fans alike absolutely incensed as well they should have been. It was an example of inept reffing at its absolute best.

The end of the first quarter found the Bombers leading by 3 to 0. But that would be the last time they would have the lead as the Argos took command in the 2nd quarter scoring 10 points in less than two minutes, then adding 7 more with 6:59 before half time. But they weren't quite done for the quarter and at the 3:32 mark they put another seven on the board with the convert after another Argo TD. The Bombers were able to put 3 on the board just as the half was closing when they got close enough for a 30-yard Palardy boot. Score at half time stood at 24 to 6 for the Argos.

Alex Brink got the Bombers within spitting distance of the end zone only to have the team settle for a field goal after two botched attempts at end zone passes. Why the Bombers didn't just go with Garrett on the ground still has me scratching my head - he had been their go-to guy all game long. The Bombers mounted their comeback at the 4:08 mark of the 3rd, as they finally managed to find the end zone on a beautiful pass from Brink to Greg Carr then adding 3 more on a 42 yard FG to end the quarter down just 5 points.

A botched run back fumble by the usually reliable Owens, resulted in an Argo turn-over and a chance for the Bombers to put more points on the board. They got 3 around the midway mark to close the gap to 2 points. This is when things started to get hairy and the ensuing mix up with the refs played havoc on the Bombers who were forced to punt the ball away to the Argos with less than 4 minutes left in the game. The Argos would manage to put 3 on the board off a Prefontaine field goal increasing the point gap and necessitating a TD for a Bomber win. Time ran out before they had that chance and the Argos have wracked up their second win in a row against reportedly superior teams. Final score: 27 -22.

Wonderful interview between Geroy Simon and Milt Stegall on the Pre-game show today. Two exceptional examples of CFL players at their very best. Off to watch my Riders play the Ti-Cats.

How the Lions pulled that one off is anyone's guess. It seemed like half their team was injured, especially on defense. Only 3 d-line and a linebacker subbing in for rush end. Lots of d-backs out or playing hurt. I expected Edmonton to take over in the second half but it didn't materialize, except for a couple of longer possessions. Khalif Mitchell is one scary dude on defense. He will likely go to the NFL next year ala Cameron Wake. Glad to have him around. at least for now.

The TSN camera caught a young fan in the stands at Mosaic holding a sign that said:

Play with Heart
We Believe

Kind of said it all for me. The Riders whether they saw it or not, did play with heart. Steady throughout the game they put points up early and hung on to win. Dinwiddie was in for most of the game though Berquist had a series or two. Weston did not have a good game, dropping about four passes until he caught a much needed one near the goal line which led to a Hughes TD.

With the help of the famous prairie wind, Chris Milo booted a 108 yarder to tie the league record for longest punt.

The Ti-Cats missed an easy TD when the usually steady handed Dave Stala dropped a well thrown ball in the end zone. Not like Stala at all. Craig Butler intercepted the next pass by Porter in the end zone to deny the Ti-Cats a TD.

One of the prettiest plays came as the 3rd was drawing to a close and the Riders were facing a 2 and out. A fake punt attempt saw Hughes take the ball and run for a first down and more keeping the drive alive and catching the Ti-Cats off guard. The drive would end in another Milo FG.

The Riders forced four turn-overs on the night - a great showing for the special teams and great individual efforts to snuff out two possible Ti-Cat TDs.

Riders win 19 - 3

They will be in Edmonton next week to play the Eskimos.

I congratulate TSN on their moving coverage of the impact felt by the deaths of four Grande Prairie high school students, members of the Warriors football team. The Eskimos and Stamps honored the boys by wearing Warrior logos on their helmets during their games this weekend.

Did not take notes during the BC game but cheered them on to their victory. Great game, Lions.......great comeback after the loss last week. Final score: BC 29 - Eskimos 10

Watching the Montreal vs Stamps game right now hoping to see the Stamps take this game. Tate is in as starter but Huffy is using Burris as short-yardage QB - unusual position for him and one that he did not execute well in a play that saw him fumble the ball and turn it over to the Als. With 3 minutes left in the half, the Stamps lead 14 to 7.

Oh, oh............the Als just picked up a Stamps fumble and ran the ball for 70 yards to the 2 yard line........Calgary is challenging the ruling on the field of a completed pass but lose their challenge. Montreal comes up short on their first attempt across the goal line but get the job done on their next play.

With 2 minutes remaining in the half, the score is now 14 -14.

Huge games next week. 5 teams have a chance to finish first, and 4 of them are playing against each other. Winnipeg and BC can win the east-west by winning their games. For Calgary to win the west both BC and Edmonton have to lose.

BC, Edmonton and Calgary are all playing home games. If Winnipeg wins in Calgary then Montreal can't win the east. If Edmonton and the Stamps both win the Lions/Als game will have everything on the line for both teams. BC would finish 3rd if they lost and Stamps/Eskies win.

Sask vs Edmonton (Fri night)
Winnipeg vs Calgary (Sat afternoon)
Montreal vs BC (Sat night)

How do crossover games work, when are they necessary, and why. (re: playoff positions)

No crossover chance this year. A 4th place team has to have more points than the 3rd place team in the other division. If they did they would take over that 3rd place playoff spot.

Wow! Canadian Men just took Gold, Silver and Bronze at the Men's Short Track Speed event in Quebec - they were absolutely outstanding!

Sorry to digress ..........have been watching the events. Canadians did well in both men's and women's events. Medals all over the place as one of the commentators just mentioned.

32 to 27 was the final score in the Stamps win over the Alouettes today.

The game did have its moments, such as the opening play of the 4th quarter when Parker intercepted a Tate pass giving Montreal the ball - though they squandered the chance - great way to get the fans going. Calgary proceeded to take the ball and with the help of the Montreal defense who wracked up 30 yards of penalties, they marched down field and into the end zone.

One of the real high-lights came with 2:05 remaining in the 4th. On 3rd and 10, the Al's gambled and caught the Stamps off-guard as #80 for the Al's grabbed the ball and ran 31 yards for an Al's TD. The 2pt convert attempt failed when Tony was tripped up by Claybrook and the Als had to settle for 6 pts. The Stamps would add 3 more points off a Parede's FG. Montreal had a final chance at the win when they came within 11 yards of the goal line. A failed pass to Richardson in the end zone was followed by a last attempt to connect only to see the ball batted away by a great Calgary defensive play.

Much as I look forward to the Gibson's Finest Player Awards for the CFL, it is the TSN Player's Poll that really captures my attention. Who better to vote for the positions than a panel of one's peers.

CFL on TSN Player Poll

"The players have spoken.

More than 250 current CFL players participated in the second annual CFL on TSN Player Poll giving their opinions in a variety of football categories.

The surveyed players were asked to name one player for each of the 11 questions in the poll with topics ranging from most under-rated player to biggest trash-talker."

First the questions:

1. Who is the CFL's most under-rated player?
2. Who is the CFL's hardest hitter?
3. Who has the CFL's best hands?
4. Who is the biggest threat to score from anywhere on the field?
5. Which quarterback has the strongest arm?
6. Who is the CFL's nastiest player?
7. Who is the CFL's biggest trash talker?
8. Who is the CFL's toughest player?
9. Who is the CFL's toughest player to bring down?
10. Who is the CFL's fastest player?
11. Who would you choose with the first pick in a CFL expansion draft?

The answers:

The largest margin of victory in this year's poll was in the hardest hitter department where B.C.'s Solomon Elimimian won his second straight crown with 53.7 percent of the vote.

1. RB Andre' Durie (Argonauts) - most under-rated player with 10.1%.
2. LB Solomon Elimimian (Lions) - hardest hitter with 53.7%
3. WR Geroy Simon (Lions) - best hands with 22.8%
4. WR/KR Chad Owens (Argos) - threat to score from anywhere with 38.3%
5. QB Henry Burris (Stampeders) - strongest arm with 48.5%
6. DE Dario Romero (Roughriders) - nastiest player with 13.2%
7. CB Dwight Anderson (Alouettes) - biggest trash talker with 26%
8. QB Buck Pierce (Blue Bombers) - toughest player with 18.9%
9. RB Corey Boyd (Argonauts) - toughest player to bring down with 25.3%
10. WR Chris Williams (Tiger Cats) - fastest player with 30.9%
11. QB Anthony Calvillo (Alouettes) - top pick in expansion draft with 26.0%

My personal favorite is toughest player with Buck Pierce winning the nod. All season I have watched Buck take hit after hit and still get up and play hard for his team. Rock on, Buck.

The Toronto Argonauts ended their losing season with a 33 - 16 home win over the Hamilton Tiger Cats last night as one of their star players - Chad Owens looked on from the sidelines due to an injury suffered in last week's game.

Andre Durie was the difference maker for the Argos with two TDs and his first 100-yard receiving game.

Corey Boyd also contributed to the Argo win helping the offense with several great runs - many for first downs.

Noel Prefontaine was perfect on the night with 7/7 converts - one from the 51 yard line.

Justin Medlock continued to be a bright spot for Hamilton as he too was perfect on the night with a 6/6 record.

Hamilton continued the QB merry-go-round, using all three of their QBs during the game. Kevin Glenn had the best pass/reception record.

Hamilton will end the season 3rd place in the Eastern Division.

Talk is that Hank Burris may join the Argos next year - will be interesting to see how this rumor plays out. It will also be interesting to see who will coach the Argos next year. The TSN panel discussed the possibility that Special Teams Coordinator Mike O'Shea of the Argos should be given the job but some feel he still needs a year or two as a player coach.

"MIKE O'SHEA
Special Teams Coordinator

Mike O’Shea entered the coaching realm in 2010 as the Toronto Argonauts Special Teams Coordinator. 2010 was a memorable one on specials teams as dynamic returner Chad Owens was named the CFL’s Most Outstanding Special Teams Player, a CFL All-Star and a CFLPA All-Star, setting various club records. The Argos special teams unit executed many memorable plays, returned five kicks for touchdowns and saw captain Bryan Crawford lead the league in ST tackles.

For years, Mike O’Shea was the stalwart of the Toronto Argonauts’ defence and special teams. He was the undisputed leader inside the locker room and, as a team captain, he was recognized by fans throughout the CFL as the admiral of the Argos’ stone wall defence and relished his role on special teams. O’Shea played 16 CFL seasons, including 12 with the Argonauts and four with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, and won three Grey Cup championships (1996-1997, 2004) all with Toronto.

#50 was a coaches’ player who always put the game and his teammates first. He knew the playbook front to back and because of his hard work, he commanded respect from rookies and veterans alike. He played in 271 regular season CFL games, the most ever by a defensive player, 18 playoff games and three Grey Cup games. He is second on the CFL’s all-time tackles list with 1,151 and is the Argos’ all-time leader in regular season and Grey Cup defensive tackles with 822 and 15 respectively. He is second on the team’s all-time games played list with 205. The native of North Bay, Ontario was a five-time East Division All-Star (1994-1995, 1997, 1999, 2000) and was named a CFL All-Star and the league’s Most Outstanding Canadian in 1999. In 2006, O’Shea became the first Canadian ever to make at least 1,000 tackles in a career and in 2007 he was named an All-Time Argo at linebacker.

An advocate for his teammates, O’Shea was a CFLPA player rep. for many years with the Argonauts and upon leaving the game, he accepted the position of 1st Vice President for the Players’ Association. There, he teamed with former teammate and friend Mike Morreale to ensure that CFL players always had a voice and that their interests weren’t overlooked.

Mike is an alumnus of the University of Guelph and is a member of the Guelph Gryphons Sports Hall of Fame. Mike and wife Richere live in Milton, Ontario with their three children: Michael, Ailish and Aisling.

Official Home of the Toronto Argonauts Football Club :: - Mike O'Shea

Personally, I think they could do far worse than to give Mike a chance.

The BC Lions are doing their best to make a statement about their preparedness for the play-offs and the Grey Cup. They owned the first half. Scoring points on every possession and effectively shutting down the Montreal offense. They rattled Anthony to the point where he called out one of his receivers after an incomplete pass.

Geroy Simon has 92 yards left before he ties Milt Stegall's record for most all-time receiving yards. Andrew Harris has two of the BC TDs and Sean Gore got his first of the season. Oh, make that a hat-trick for Andrew. He just got another at 11:22 into the third putting the Lions ahead by 30 points.

Travis Lulay is showing why he should be considered for the Western Conference MOP if not the CFL MOP. He just matched Calvillo TD record of 32 on the year. When he isn't completing passes, he is reading the defense for an option to run which he has done several times tonight.

As good as the offense has been, the defense is right up there in points. Corey Banks has made some killer tackles, reading his man to the minute and knocking the ball away just as it arrives - cleanly and clearly. Solomon has been all over the field as usual and put SJ Green out of commission in the first half.

If the Lions go on to win this game; if they stay healthy and keep playing solid, most error free football - I believe they will win the Grey Cup and wouldn't that be a great come-back story.

At 8:41 in the 3rd, Billy Parker intercepted a Lulay pass and the Als got possession but only for as long as it took McKenzie to lay one on Anthony for the Lions' 4th sack of the game. Not to worry about the interception, the Al's just went 2 and out.

They sure took the boots to the Als.

What a remarkable turnaround this year. 0-5 start to 11-7 and winning the division. I've never seen a team go from having such a boring stale and predictable offense to perhaps the most misdirection the league has ever seen. Mowich, I agree, as much as the offense has stepped it up their defense really tightened up. Got to give Wally a lot of credit for turning a disaster into quite a season.

From here on out it's one game knockouts. Anything can happen. As good as Travis has been their are also some wiley vets around like Rick Ray who can make things happen too. I'm giving it all a coin toss. Hope the Lions pull it out.

I felt a bit anxious for a couple of minutes when lulay was hit, and appeared to be injured, but
after the interview with him, when he explained, it seems to be a temporary problem, and not serious.

this game was remarkable
