Just as the NHL season comes to an end the CFL preseason is well underway. After the Lions chewed up the Stamps in Calgary on Wednesday, the Alouettes downed the Bombers in their game last night. The Lions game was a shut-out while the Bombers managed to put 15 on the board against the Als by I think it was 27 points. I wasn't able to watch all of either games so cannot comment on the ability or not of the players on the teams so far. Anthony sat out the Montreal game but looked very fit on the sidelines.

The Riders - yeah, my team is back! - have invited the Eskimos to come play in Mosaic tonight. I always look forward to the very first game when I finally get to watch the Riders each season. I am wondering if it will be Ryan or Weston or one of the new additions who will step up to fill Andy's very large boots. I wonder if our special teams will be worthy of the name this year. Most of all I am really interested in what Greg Marshall, our new head coach, has managed to do to improve the team and add some new plays to the roster. He is known as a defensive coach so I am hoping that means we will see a much more beefed up defensive line and better defensive execution than last year. Would also like to see improvement in our ground play - a lot more yards gained on the ground this year.

GO, RIDERS, GO!

There is a game tonight? Too bad they don't have real turf anymore. All they'd have to do is get the linemen to toss the QB like it was dwarf tossing and he could slide 20 yds easily.

So, is this going to be the year when we will see ONLY Canadian quarterbacks, Canadian Coaches and Canadian Managers in this Canadian Football League? Is this going to be the year when we will see the end of national discrimination and fill the teams with either ALL Canadians (as the name of the League implies) or with players based on MERIT?

Or is this going to be another season of hypocrisy?

GO RIDERS I can't wait for the season to begin. My son is wild eyed Lions fan.
He claims they beat Calgary, oh they did but then my mother could beat Calgary
and she has been dead for fourteen years. (said with tongue in cheek)
It will be a great season.
On a hockey note, I found my old CCF card today, no not a political card, it was a
Counter Canuk Fans card. We paid for these cards and went to a place to watch
the game. We brought our favorite booze, and chips and cheered for anyone
except the Canuks. That was back in the late 80's and 90's. I couldn't help but
think after the major Canuks choke the other night the club should still be alive and
well.

Apparently slotbacks need to be Chinese and only wide receivers can be Middle Eastern.

Jack, no one cares about the import/non-import quotas. The league wants to develop talent in Canadian Universities and have a game for them to play once they graduate. Anyone who complains about it isn't a real fan and never will be.

Yes, I agree, and as I mentioned once before, it is no different than the NHL, where the u.s. needs the
canadian players to be part of their teams to help develope the u.s. players, and be part of the NHL, on
an equal basis, and make it enjoyable for all of the fans.

The blend of different areas, creates a stable, high quality league.

The Riders managed to squeak out a 23 to 22 win over the Eskimos last night. Both teams with new coaches, Kavis Reed - former special teams coordinator for the Riders - is the new Edmonton coach and Greg Marshall for the Riders with Richie Hall back with us a defensive coordinator.

Neither team played many of their starters last night including QBs. Ryan Dinwiddie, Cole Berquist and Chris Leak all took several series for the Riders and looked fairly solid in the pocket. Kerry Joseph, Mark Nichols and Marc Mueller threw the ball for the Esks. Marc got a standing ovation from the crowd in Mosaic as he is the former award-winning QB for the Regina Rams and is the grandson of Ronnie Lancaster.

For the first time since 2009, our special teams look like they might live up to the name as Hugh Charles was able to take a kick-off return and run it back for a TD.

Both teams defenses had some glitches but managed the ball well and got a couple of sacks a piece.

The weather went from bad to worse to absolutely foul with sheets of rain added to a howling wind that played havoc with the ball. By the end of the 4th the on field cameras were fogging up and players could barely see the ball - just a typical game in Sask.

Kreskin, it is called CANADIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE.

Well, is it CANADIAN? Are the coaches, managers, quarterbacks and any other significant players CANADIAN? Yes, maybe some are. But why the quota? Do you want the best or do you want to be racist and exclude the best because of their place of birth? Would you be happy about sending a good American kid home for the priviledge of playing an inferior Canadian kid? Do you want to see quality?

If it is CANADIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE, let all players be Canadian. Let all managers and coaches and quarterbacks be Canadian. Or let it be the BEST, without quota about place of birth and let the league be the best. And admit that the Canadian one applying for a position may NOT be the best.

good quality american kids are sent to the minors in hockey all the time to make room for a better
canadian kid, thats life.

Do you think the americans should have to be on american NHL teams only, with no canadian presence?
They wouldn't be in the NHL, or they would have to start their own league within their borders.

The CFL wouldn't be very good without the u.s. players, but I guess they could have a lower league
of their own.

The Canadian players would all have to get their experience in the u.s. anyway, to gain any kind of
status and quality of play to compare at all to the CFL, as it is now, then come home and play
against each other, I don't think they would enjoy that at all, the challenge for the canadians
to be the best, is playing with and against the u.s. players, and i'm sure they love it.

The subject football league is called CANADIAN You know: CFL.

As such, it should have players, coaches, managers and support staff nobody, but Canadians.

Or, at least admit the hypocrisy about the most blatantly racist anti-American bias.

It's called Canadian Football the same way Australian Rules Football is called such. The rules are distinctly unique to any other version of the game.

Why would you want only Canadians to play while arguing out the other side of your mouth that anyone should play?

The american league in baseball has canadians playing, nothing recist about that.

The national league has canadians as well, not racist.

They have central americans as well, it is for everyone who can make it, not
a protectionist league, keeping out foreigners, and the CFL doesn't want to be
like that either, they want to be the best 'they' can be, and they won't do that
by keeping to themselves, and keeping others out.

not racist at all, but 'open'.

Has any of them anything similar to the racist and selective requirements for qualification as the so-called Canadian Football League? Would any of them restrict eligibility based on the location of birth?

Just asking.

and I suppose you don't object to many canadian football players using the u.s. colleges for their
scholarship, or otherwise further training in their chosen sport, but then when they have to come
back to canada, they close the door to all the americans.
If you had your choice, then all canadian players must further their education and football in
canadian universities, who are not equipped to help them enough, their skills would stall there,
the league would be much lower than the CFL is today, the public interest would fade, and there
would be no money made by owners etc., who would be operating a losing franchise, similar to the
phoenix coyotes.

sorry, but your closed opinion, would kill the CFL.

I am only objecting to hypocrisy.

If that sports entity were called anything but CANADIAN football league, I'd have no objections, at all.

We call a league CANADIAN, when pretty much all the key players are NOT Canadians.
We call it CANADIAN, when most coaches and managers are NOT Canadians.

And even that would be tolerable, if the league did not have the rule that would brand them racist in every other enterprise in life, the quota system that favours untalented Canadians over quality players from elsewhere.

Are we looking for quality or are we unreasonably patriotic?

well, if we looked at like kreskin said re: australian rules football, then we can accept it as canadian
rules football, and feel better about it right, it's just the rules, but the actual league is open,
makes sense to me.
