The Calgary Stampeders deserve full credit for a great CFL season and their loss to our Riders yesterday and subsequent trash talk about officials by two lame brain players should in no way deflect from their accomplishments in 2010.

Brandon Browner and Dwight Anderson got everything they deserved and it was high time. Now, instead of standing up and taking it like men they are blaming officials for bad calls. They both knew they were on notice by the CFL and would be closely watched by the officials. They were warned by their coach at half time – Huff was so incensed he mentioned it during a half-time interview. Did they care? Not that I saw. What I saw were two players who acted like they were above the rules. Did they give a whit what the penalties and loss of yards would mean to their team? Not that I saw. Did they stop to think about their teammates who were trying their best to play a solid game and get the chance to advance to the Cup? I doubt it. Browner and Anderson are not what the CFL is all about and the sooner they learn that the better players they will be. In the meantime, maybe a little humbling experience in the NFL might help them.

Hank Burris hugged Darian after the game yesterday and took the time as he did so to talk to our QB – now that folks is class. There are many great players on the Stamps team and they all deserve credit. That they weren’t able to pull off a win yesterday is to our (Saskatchewan’s) credit and nothing else.

Our guys came out slow but never gave up. In the face of headlines calling for their demise and trash talk from Calgary players, the Riders held the high ground yet again and simply played to win. Freeman’s slide for the ball in the end zone was the icing on the cake for Calgary and Grice-Mullins owes him big time. It could so easily have gone the other way. One Calgary player summed it up pretty well when he spoke of the fact that there were at least three if not four red jerseys in the end zone and just one lone green jersey. But that lone jersey made all the difference because it was worn by a player who was part of a team that feels like a family. He is part of a team that win or lose are willing to stand up and be counted when it matters most. They take blame individually but victory is always shared.

No matter that Andy was denied the ball yesterday, he became a blocker for his pal Ryan. No matter that Jason couldn’t get clear, he blocked for Weston. And on it went, players helping in any way they could. Patrick grabbing Burris’ pass and taking to the red zone and Ryan with that toe tip reception in the end zone - each of them going that extra little bit for their team and their fans. This folks is what team work is all about.

I am not blind to my team’s deficiencies – not by a long shot – our special teams ....... well they aren’t so special and I’ll leave it at that. Compared to other teams our defense is kind of small. Our QB has trouble with nerves and a hard time seeing over the heads of the opposition’s defense. I could go on but you get the point. What the Riders do have is heart and soul and us their fans and supporters. Rider Nation is not simply a Saskatchewan term; it applies to every single fan across this country and those in the US and around the world who are with our guys all the way. Just ask TSN which team always puts up the biggest audience numbers. Sure we want a Grey Cup and think we deserve one but you know what Cup or not, I and millions of other members of the RN will be right back next year cheering them on and knowing that they will give us some of the most heart-stopping games in this league.

GO GREEN AND WHITE! GO RIDERS!

My sister sent me an mp3 file this morning called The Spirit of Rider Pride. I believe it is by a group called Canadian Country. It begins; The chorus begins ...'put on your Green and show your Rider Pride...etc.

I was wondering Bob, if this is the song on You Tube? Unfortunately, I am still stuck on dial-up and it takes way too long to download the vid. I was also wondering if anyone knew where I could find the lyrics as I can't make out all the words and would love to be able to sing along? Of course that has not prevented me from blasting the song from my speakers as I write this.

Am I ready for the Grey Cup??? YOU BETCHA!

GO GREEN AND WHITE! GO, RIDERS, GO! RIDER NATION ROCKS!

Rider Nation receives Commissioner's Award
http://cfl.ca/article/rider-nation-receives-commissioner-s-award

"This award is for everyone who has ever worn a watermelon instead of a toque to a CFL game," CFL Commissioner Mark Cohon said in making the announcement during the Gibson's Finest CFL Player Awards.

"Each year, I have the privilege of handing out the Commissioner's Award to a person or group that has made an outstanding contribution to the development of Canadian football," he said.

"This year, the one hundredth year of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, I decided to pay tribute to a group that epitomizes the way CFL fans love our league: the Rider Nation, which collectively does so much to make our league vibrant and strong and fun."

Way to go, Mark. And from a proud member of the Rider Nation, I thank you very much.

Being the proud Canadian that I am, I also wish to congratulate Andy Fantuz for being the top Canadian receiver in the CFL. Way to go Andy.

The lead up to the Grey Cup game provides an opportunity for reporters to write volumes about every aspect of the game - the players, the coaches, the accommodations – oh yeah didn’t miss that one - and personal interest stories. One of the most touching articles I read today is about my extended family – the Rider Nation. After Rider Nation won a trophy, you might think that reporters would find something besides us to write about, but not quite yet it seems. A fellow by the name of David Staples writing for the Edmonton Journal has penned a piece that will touch the hearts of every die-hard Rider fan and some of other team loyalties as well.

This article, IMHO, comes as close as any to expressing what it is like to be a Rider supporter and with that the loyalty and devotion we have to our team. As has been said, for some of us it is almost, if not, a religion.

Every Rider Nation member should read this article. I guarantee it will touch your hearts and might bring a tear to your eye as it did to mine. Below is a quote to whet your appetite.

“Me, I'm not any kind of CFL fan at all. I can name the entire starting line-up of the dynasty Eskimo teams of the early 1980s, but I haven't been to a game in more than a decade. I won't be watching the Grey Cup. But I wish I cared like Rider fans do. In their green-painted mugs and melon-covered noggins, we can see they possess something meaningful, something that gives life savour.

They are fanatics in full throttle, full throat. In their passion, they are no longer separate and small and individualistic, they are the great green tribe, Rider Nation. They are one.

We go through the world -- increasingly it would seem -- as individuals, separate from one another, alone as much as together, living in our own heads and homes, with our own worries and triumphs. Head phones on, eyes straight ahead; don't know the neighbours, ignorant of the young, unsure, if not afraid, of all the others.

But as fans we find the joy of unity and community. The feelings that a simple game can evoke are one of the last remaining, significant tribal pleasures allowed to us.”

Came across a couple of other background pieces that may be of interest to Rider fans.

Great article about Ken Miller.

I will never ever forget the pride and joy I felt watching Canadians celebrate the 2010 Olympics – it was such a unifying time for our country. It gave us a chance to wave our flag and belt out Oh Canada at the drop of a hat and we did so in unprecedented numbers. Canada rocked!

The pride we showed in our country and our athletes shocked some people as we had not previously been known for such demonstrative love of country. But, as our Prime Minister stated at the time, Canadians have always had a quiet pride in their country and all we were waiting for was a chance to voice it – loudly and clearly. Man, we rocked the world!

Now we come to another unifying moment in our country – the 98th Grey Cup. Once again we will see Canadians from coast to coast and around the world tune in for the spectacle even if they don’t have a stake in the game. Expect this game to once again provide huge numbers for TSN probably even larger than the largest estimated viewing audience last year.

Under what is expected to be a sky of blue, the Sea of Green will dominate Commonwealth Stadium. Call us ‘drunken leprechauns’ or ‘melon heads’ or nutballs - heck call us whatever you like but long before many other Canadians learned the joy of standing up and being counted, the Rider Nation, Saskatchewan, the CFL and TSN were all reaping the benefits.

So when you see us let loose and howl for joy today, or as you look upon our painted and tattooed faces; as you observe our team colors displayed proudly, flags waving and signs held high, I hope it brings you a smile or a chuckle – nutballs that we are – we sure know what cheering our team on really means. And, we know that the 13th man can and has made all the difference in the world.

PUT ON YOUR GREEN AND SHOW YOUR RIDER PRIDE!

GO GREEN AND WHITE! GO, RIDERS, GO! WE LOVE YOU GUYS!

I'm looking forward to the game. I hope it's frost-bite cold. Make them suffer and earn those stripes.

My sentiments exactly, I don't think either team really deserved to win that one, but Saskatchewan deserved it less. Two and out eight times in a row in the 3rd... lame.
Yes, lots of two and outs, and no real defining game moments. Richardson, the MVP, played a much stronger game last year.
