The US 101st Airborne Division deployed to Romania
This is about 4,700 soldiers who were redeployed to Europe from Kentucky, CBC reports.
The division entered Europe for the first time in 80 years.
The commander of one of the brigades, Edwin Matthaidess, noted that his unit is closer to Ukrainian territory than any other US forces, and is “closely following” Russian actions.
U.S. paratroopers are also conducting exercises that “exactly repeat what is happening” in neighboring Ukraine.
In the event of an escalation of hostilities or an attack on NATO, the paratroopers are “fully prepared to cross the border into Ukraine.”
