Back to winning the hearts and minds through diplomacy…on Wednesday, hours before top officials from Greenland and Denmark were to meet with the US in the hope of warding off Trump’s threats to seize the Arctic island, the news outlet Politico said it had heard of musings regarding another Nordic island.
“We heard that former Rep Billy Long, Trump’s nominee for ambassador to Iceland, joked to members on the floor last night that Iceland will be the 52nd state and he’ll be governor,” Politico wrote in its morning newsletter.

The reaction in Reykjavík was swift. In a statement to the Guardian, Iceland’s foreign ministry said it had contacted the US embassy for clarification. “The ministry for foreign affairs contacted the US embassy in Iceland to verify the veracity of the alleged comments,” it said.

In a petition calling on Iceland’s foreign minister, Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, to reject Long as ambassador to the country, critics said: “These words, spoken by Billy Long, whom Donald Trump has nominated as ambassador to Iceland, may have been said in jest. Still, they are offensive to Iceland and the Icelandic people, who have had to fight for their freedom and have always been a friend to the United States,” the petition read, etc…

Within hours of its launch, more than 3,200 people had signed the petition, backing the call for the US to “nominate another person who shows greater respect for Iceland and the Icelandic people”.

Donald Trump mocks Mark Carney as ‘future governor of Canada’
Trump took the jab while listing several U.S. governors — before adding Carney to the list.

He may be our current prime minister but as far as Donald Trump is concerned, Mark Carney is merely the “future governor of Canada.”

Trump took the jab while discussing his and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s efforts to combat invasive Asian carp in the Great Lakes, listing several U.S. governors he said would be asked to participate — before adding Carney to the list.

“I’ll be asking other Governors to join into this fight, including those of Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, New York and, of course, the future Governor of Canada, Mark Carney, who I know will be happy to contribute to this worthy cause,” Trump wrote Tuesday on Truth Social, along with a video of what appears to be silver carp jumping out of water.

The swipe comes more than a year after Trump gave the “governor” title to former prime minister Justin Trudeau and proposed that Canada become America’s 51st state.

“Separately, I am also working to save The Great Salt Lake, in Utah, which, in a short period of time, if nothing is done, will have no water,” Trump added in the post.

“This is on top of everything else I am doing,” he pointed out. “Only ‘TRUMP’ CAN DO IT! President DONALD J. TRUMP.”

Heightened tension between Canada and the U.S. continues over trade, foreign policy, and economic relations.

It also comes more than a week after Carney flip-flopped his stance on the war in Iran, with the prime minister’s initial comments showing support for American and Israeli strikes on Iran and maintaining security in the Middle East — until caving days later and calling Operation Epic Fury illegal.

The PMO’s office has not publicly responded to Trump’s latest mockery of Canada’s sovereignty.

🤣🤣 Trump is still poking at Canadians who believe he's something that he's not. I find it "amusing".

While Canada is the world’s fourth largest producer and fourth largest exporter of crude oil, our lack of access to global markets results in 97% of our oil exports being sold at a huge discount to the United States. That already costs the Canadian economy foregone revenues that have been estimated as high as $20 billion per year.
U.S. President Donald Trump issued several pipeline permits ‌on Wednesday, including one for the construction of a new pipeline, to facilitate the transportation of crude oil and petroleum products between the U.S. and Canada, according to documents released by the White House.

The permit authorizing construction was issued to the Bakken Pipeline Company for pipeline facilities at Burke County, North Dakota.

Other permits were issued for the maintenance and operation of existing pipelines at border locations in North Dakota and Michigan.

Below is an overview of ‌the permits released by the White House.

Instead of selling crude at a discount, we should be contraction US pipelines and terminals in Lousianna to load ships for us.

Unfortunately, with our current government, there'll be no oil in those pipelines from Canada.

Ambassador Peter Hoekstra fans the flames of the 51st state debate
The U.S. ambassador’s decision to repost Trump’s message undermines diplomacy and will fuel anger in Canada

Ambassador Peter Hoekstra is kicking a hornet’s nest by posting about Canada becoming the 51st state.

Donald Trump’s point man in Canada, a man who has had a rough ride since he got here, is in Quebec City for meetings that by accounts were going well — and then Hoekstra did something stupid on social media.

He took what Donald Trump had said on his Truth Social account and shared it on his own account.

“51st State!” Trump posted to Truth Social just before 9:30 Monday evening.

The post included a link to a Bloomberg article on how Canada’s economy has dipped into a recession for the first time since 2020. On Tuesday morning, just after 8 a.m., Hoekstra posted a screenshot of Trump’s post combined with a screenshot of the Bloomberg article.

He offered no further comment beyond sharing the photos, but any reasonable person could look at that and rightly think that Ambassador Hoekstra is endorsing Canada become the 51st state of the U.S.A.

If that’s his view, then I would agree with calls to kick him out of the country. We don’t need diplomats in this country who actively try to undermine Canadian sovereignty.

What Hoekstra has said on the issue
Hoekstra was asked during his confirmation hearing whether Canada was a sovereign state.

“Canada is a sovereign state. Yes,” Hoekstra said before going on to say he didn’t know about the relationship between Trump and former prime minister Justin Trudeau.

In media interviews he has put the 51st state issue in the rearview mirror.

“From my standpoint, from the president’s standpoint, 51st state’s not coming back … It’s done,” Hoekstra told the National Post last year.

In an interview with me last June, Hoekstra tried to downplay the 51st state issue but said if the president brought it up, he wouldn’t tell him that he couldn’t.

While the ambassador has tried to claim the offer was a term of endearment from Trump, a show of how much Trump loves Canada, he has clearly heard how Canadians feel. He has been told in no uncertain terms that Canadians view the calls for Canada to become the 51st state as offensive and aggressive.

Which is why his decision to repost Trump’s comment, and to go out of the way to combine two separate screenshots, is so puzzling.

What the embassy says on the issue
I submitted several questions to the embassy about the post including asking if the ambassador was now endorsing the 51st state idea, what his intention with the post was and how reasonable Canadians should read the post.

“This is amplification of the President’s Truth Social post, which is our usual practice,” came the reply from an embassy spokesperson in Ottawa.

Trump posts a lot of things on Truth Social and not all of them, not even a fraction of them, are reposted by Hoekstra.

Hoekstra’s job is to defend America’s interests in Canada, to represent the Trump administration. Reposting a trolling comment from the president about Canada becoming the 51st state does nothing to advance the interests of either country.

Since arriving in Canada, Hoekstra has been attacked, often unfairly, for doing his job and speaking bluntly.

When he is attacked for helping to revive and amplify the 51st state talk, which will further harm relations between our two countries, he will deserve everything he gets.

This post was incredibly stupid and tone deaf.
