“Venezuela has some of the largest oil reserves in the world,” said Richard Masson, a former Canadian oil industry executive. “They’re primarily heavy oil and bitumen, which are very much like what Canada’s reserves are here in the oil sands.”

Experts say political instability in Venezuela had long given Canadian oil producers the advantage, but if Trump can topple the Maduro government, it could mean increased competition.

“This makes it all the more important for us to think about sending out oil to the pacific, to a northwest pacific pipeline, knowing that the Asian market is growing,” said Heather Exner-Pirot, a senior fellow and director of natural resources, energy and environment at the Macdonald-Laurier Institute. Somehow completely forgotten in the above graph, intentionally or not, is Canada:

Exner-Pirot suggests Trump’s interest in Venezuelan oil could eventually force a fight for access to the U.S. market. Masson says it may take long for the impact of those tensions to take effect.

“The question becomes: If Venezuela became a democracy, with the rule of law, with a stable investment climate, how long would it take to build the projects to displace western Canadian oil?” Masson said. “I think that would take a long time.”

(But so is pipeline approval, construction, and Canadian bureaucracy and various other bullshit to gain access to tidewater for Canada’s two landlocked provinces)

Um, Alberta should be #4 ahead of Iran. According to the latest, Alberta has the 4th highest reserves. Just thought I'd put it out there. That's why the U.S. needs our oil. The issue is if Venezuela starts sending its oil to the U.S. Gulf states, Alberta may well be SOL!!

Yeah, totally hear you. Shame somebody wasn’t advocating for a pipeline to the Pacific for landlocked Alberta & Saskatchewan.😉

Does that mean they'll buy from Saskatchewan instead where the Canadian heavy oil industry started?

Anywho…Trump (not a country) on Venezuela (a country), said, "And we just knocked out, I don't know if you read or you saw, they have a big plant or a big facility where they send the, you know, where the ships come from. Two nights ago we knocked that out, so we hit them very hard," Trump said on WABC's "Cats and Cosby," though he didn't provide specifics…because Trump.

If Trump’s comments are accurate, then it would mark the first, you know, known attack on land in Venezuela since the Trump administration began its campaign against the country.

On Monday, as he welcomed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to his Mar-a-Lago club, Trump was pressed by a reporter for more details on the strike -- including whether the action was carried out by the U.S. military after Trump confirmed in October that he authorized the CIA to operate inside the South American nation.
"Well, it doesn't matter, but there was a major explosion in the dock area where they load the boats up with drugs," Trump responded. "They load the boats up with drugs. So we hit all the boats and now we hit the area. It's the implementation area. That's where they implement. And that is no longer around."

The Venezuelan government is yet to respond, and it is not clear whether the strike took place inside Venezuelan territory.
"Ladies and gentlemen, I have some tremendous news to share with you today. Truly huge. We just pulled off an operation like nobody has ever seen before. It was perfect. A perfect execution.

Down in Venezuela - which is a total mess, by the way, a socialist disaster, very sad what’s happening there - there was a facility. A massive, massive drug factory. Maybe the biggest in the world. They were making narcotics, the best and the purest ever, they were selling to everybody and we just can't have that.

And the Generals came to me - great generals, big strong guys, the best in the world - and they said, 'Sir, we have the location.' And I said, 'Take it out.' And we did. Bigly!

We hit it with the most beautiful military equipment. We rebuilt the military, remember? It was depleted, it was weak, but now it’s beautiful. We used the best missiles. Boom. Gone. Just like that. America is winning again. Big league. Venezuela's drug business? Dead. My business? Booming. And that's the way we like it. Beautiful."
