Canadian consumer confidence this month fell to levels not seen since 1982, the Conference Board of Canada reported Friday.
Based on a poll of 2,000 people between Oct. 2 and 8, the conference board said its index of consumer sentiment fell 11.9 points to a reading of 73.9. That was the weakest point since the third quarter of 1982, when Canada was stuck in recession.
But as one of our readers at CBC.ca pointed out: "At Costco, the lineups are long and people still have their buggies full of crap they don't need. The streets are full of SUVs, you still need a reservation at most restaurants on a weekend and the unemployment rate is unchanged."

What do you think? Do you see signs around you of people slowing down in how they spend their money? Are you now holding off on new purchases beyond the essentials?
How does this compare to the 1982 recession?

As I said in an earlier post, hoarding has started.

Those who disregard the coming `storm` must have `bux to burn`.

And I wish them the best.....?????????

We check the fliers every week, and if something is selling at a really low price - beans, T.P., we do tend to buy a case or two.

Dunno if one would call it hoarding, but the pantry is full.

Really, unless you have a warehouse, you can only store so much. Our pantry and freezer would last 4 months tops, and then...................?

Disasters are something only the uber rich don't have to share.

:munky2:.....hoonose?

The signs I see of people losing confidence basically are only in the media. Perhaps it's part of being in the magical bubble that is Alberta, but, the only effects so far here seem to be through words on paper or the tv. They will come true eventually I'm sure. You tell people often enough that the economy is collapsing, and they will eventually make it collapse (pulling out of share, etc.). Hey, BTW, where did this summer's food shortage that was supposed to starve us all half to death get to?

The medis always blows things way out of proportion. Like the price of gas was going to go well over $2 a liter too.
